Facebook page. Read about this place on Chowhound so I went to check it out today (a Thursday). They do in fact have carts on weekdays but the selection wasn't great. I didn't see any turnip cakes. On the other hand, the dumpling soup (ordered off the menu) was a good deal for about $5 - lots of tasty hong kong style wontons or dumplings. The dim sum quality was good, not great. I tried their chicken feet, lotus wrapped sticky rice, fish balls, and fried yam dumpling. Their seasoning are on the light side, and not oily at all. Now you have even more options for Cantonese food around 7 corners.

I can't say too much about the food at Corsino Cantina, because we only stopped in for a glass of wine and a few nibbles at the bar. I mentioned in a post from several years ago how much I liked that lots of places in NYC bring you a snack at the bar. We were at Corsino during happy hour and were each treated to a ricotta and orange honey crostini, a generous cube of mortadella, and a dish of olives and pickled veggies. The crostini were quite good so we ordered a few more: fennel, orange & white anchovy and chicken liver. Both were very simple but nicely prepared. Everything on the menu is under $20, with the exception of a seafood pasta that includes lobster ($21). The ambiance was warm and friendly, with warm wood walls and floors and candelight. The bartender was pleasent helpful and had no problem pouring samples of a wine or two, so we could find one we liked. They had a great selection of Italian wines - and grappa. It seemed like a popular local spot and is one that I would be happy to stop back into on a future visit to the neighborhood.

I had an hour to kill this evening, so I stopped into Chief Ike's for a couple of beers. I haven't been there in years, and I think then only on (hectic) weekend nights. The place was empty early in the evening, and I noticed an extraordinary smell coming from ... somewhere. So, thinking I may come back some night for some wings or rings of some such, I picked up the menu next to me and took a look. Salmon burgers ($don't remember) Apple-glazed cornish game hens ($13) Pizza with roasted garlic, caramelized onion, sausage, and mushroom ($14) Not on the menu was a special of tri-tip with sauteed mushrooms and roasted potatoes that looked gorgeous. Wha? This is a dive joint, right? I regret that I didn't have the time to partake this evening, but have any of you enjoyed the fare at Chief Ike's? Is it as good as it sounds? The price is amazing; the product is promising; the vision is inspiring and admirable.

Okay Rockwellians, I have been holding out on you. Yes. Believe it or not. I have found the perfect brunch place for me and it happens to be at a place I consider a dive bar. The menu is smallish but everything I have had has been extremely well executed and the dish I had today was out of this world. Today I had a gazpacho unlike any other I have had. Not only are there yummy tomatoes, it has chunks of peaches, cantalope and other fruits with a nice amount of heat thrown in from peppers. A very healthy brunch choice I would add. Oh you may be wondering with what is this gazpacho served? Well, let me tell you... the most fabulous corn cakes I have ever experienced. The corn cakes are a combination of cornbread and pancakes with crunchy fresh corn in the batter. YUM. The cakes are topped with smoked salmon and chive sour cream. The presentation alone makes the dish special but the taste makes it divine. I have had both the eggs benedict and eggs florentine which taste amazingly fresh. I know a weird adjective to describe a dish but sometimes egg dishes at restaurants don't taste all that fresh to me. The bacon is really good too. The fruit cup is a real treat because the chef shows a bit of whimsy with it. The price is right too for brunch as the entrees run $8.00 and the sides are $2.50. Plus they play really good music and if you have kids they have great video games for them to play. Larry the owner really wants this to be a family friendly brunch spot and has invested in high chairs and booster seats. Plus the place is non smoking during brunch. Oh and the food at night is really quite nice too but I love brunch so this is what I want to write. Brunch is on Saturday and Sundays from 11-3. YUMMMM...

Hey, this might be "why we are fat," but it looks like nothing short of a smart business move to me. (Functionally, what's the difference between this, and a grab-n-go sandwich from the refrigerator at Sweet Magnolia? Okay, the quality, but ... what about that *nasty* vending machine in south Adams-Morgan?)
