  1. This landed in my inbox this morning, from the Dept. of Useless Information. Drinks International's survey of the world's most admired wine brands. It's a Tour de Force in bullshit, and good reason for consumers to maintain a healthy skepticism of corporate winespeak. Zero info on selection criteria. The global panel of wine experts sounds like an outfit I'd be proud to be kicked out of, if I was a wine expert, that is. Imagine if you are number 15 or 17 on this list. The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands is considered a leading authority on the most influential and trending wine producers from around the world and the full list can be seen below: 1. Penfolds, Australia 2. Torres, Spain 3. Villa Maria, New Zealand 4. Concha Y Toro, Chile 5. M. Chapoutier, France 6. Sassicaia, Italy 7. E. Guigal, France 8. Marqués de Riscal, Spain 9. Errazuriz, Chile 10. Ridge, USA 11. Cono Sur, Chile 12. Felton Road, New Zealand 13. Campo Viejo, Spain 14. Vega Sicilia, Spain 15. Château Margaux, France 16. Barefoot, USA 17. Tignanello, Italy 18. Château d’Yquem, France 19. Yalumba, Australia 20. Château Petrus, France 21. Cloudy Bay, New Zealand 22. Château Musar, Lebanon 23. Cavit, Italy 24. Château Lafite, France 25. Louis Latour, France 26. McGuigan, Australia 27. Georges Duboeuf, France 28. Château Haut-Brion, France 29. Château Cheval Blanc, France 30. Santa Rita, Chile 31. Jean Marc Brocard, France 32. 2. Just moved to Philly? This is your food and drink bucket list by Danya Henninger via Billypen.com
  3. The Chronicle just released Alison Cook's 2016 Top 100 restaurants list. It's been a couple years since I've been to her number 1, Oxheart...I need to get back. As a Heights resident, I was pleased to see 4 of our neighborhood places in the top 25 (Bernadines, Coltivare, Hunky Dory, and Foreign Correspondents). Looking good in the neighborhood (and well done to the Treadsack team).
  4. Does anyone have the faintest idea what he's doing with this list? Surely he doesn't mean Ten Best, or even his Ten Favorites. At first I thought it was something like his top 10 most exciting openings of 2018, but nope, not that either. I'm a bit confused, not that it much matters. As for their merits, the only one from ##3-10 at which I had a great meal this year was Spoken English, FWIW. (My most recent meal at Hitmitsu was good, not great, and not quite worth the $$. But I've been wowed there in the past.) I haven't been to Three Blacksmiths or Centrolina.
  5. Josh, please feel free to agree or disagree with this list - I'd love to hear your thoughts (to be honest, I haven't read it, but I just saw that it exists, and I know that people may be interested in what you have to say). In general, I'm not a fan of "Top X Lists," but hell, until we get a stronger Houston member base, why not discuss it? Apr 10, 2018 - "38 Essential Houston Restaurants" by Amy McCarthy on houston.eater.com PS - To our Houston readers: We live by word-of-mouth, and offer this community as a free service without any revenue. If you believe in supporting small businesses - especially ones who aren't trying to gouge or take advantage of you - the greatest gift you could give us would be to sign up and participate. Cheers, Rocks
  6. I told my hubby that I want to go to Benu for my b'day dinner this year. Major food porn at the link below. "Top 100 Restaurants 2018" by Michael Bauer on projects.sfchronicle.com We've been to quite a few: B. Patisserie, Cala, Californios, Chez Panisse, Frances, Gary Danko, Kin Khao, Kokkari Estiatorio, La Ciccia, Lord Stanley, Nopalito, Petit Crenn, Prospect, Yank Sing and Zuni. Maybe this will be of some use to you.
  7. The 2017 edition of LA Weekly's 99 Essential Restaurants has dropped! This year they also have inaugurated a Freshman 15 list of newcomers to watch. In the past I've found their lists to be interesting and the majority of recommended restaurants I've tried have been worth the visit for the reasons described. For the 99 List, I especially appreciate their mapping and sorting-by-neighborhood features.
  8. Brightest Young Things published their 2015 round-up of best food in DC according to a number of local food writers. Each of the participants were asked to name their favorite food blog, web sit or column. Logan Hollers from BYT named this board as a favorite and had this to say: Don Rockwell. One of my favorite parts of DC is the incredibly robust food community. People here love to eat, and they know their stuff. If you think DC isn't a player on the national scene, food-wise, check out some of the forums on DonRockwell.com. You'd be hard pressed to find a more passionate, knowledgeable base of foodies. The post is a great and very comprehensive of the year's best (and not so great). Read it here: 12/18/15 - "2015 DC Food Round-Up By The Pros" on brightestyoungthings.com
  9. Have you seen them? Click-thru, 20-whatever listicles, where the prominent forward arrow is part of an advertisement? How do we stop this? (Obviously, stop going to visit listicles, but in more practical terms?) I'll help to identify all perpetrators by tagging their websites in this thread. Please name them, and cite the listicle. Cheers, Rocks
