  1. This place is not big (they repurposed and upgraded the former coffee space 3 years ago) - they have a very cozy indoor space and an adjacent outdoor area which is awesome in Spring, Summer and Fall. They enclose in the Winter months and heaters help make it an extension of the indoor space. This is a true "family" restaurant, from the kitchen to the front-of-the-house you will find a family member nearby always ready to assist. The food is fresh. The salads are excellent and big, so if you happen to split one you will be fine. Their cheesy garlic bread is the perfect start on a cooler Fall evening (like last night). They change their menu seasonally and even recently opened for breakfast on weekends only. I could bore you with the dishes I have tried, but I always try something different every time we visit; everything has been great and prepared with care. They have a "Social hour" Friday's from 3-6 PM featuring live music be I have not been able to catch that yet. Two (2) very cool concepts, Sunday Family dinner and Gnocchi Thursdays. Sunday Family Dinner is a special including salad & entree (~$25). Currently you can opt for spaghetti or a lasagna (composition changes weekly). Gnocchi Thursdays ($18) allows you to select from one of several weekly, rotating gnocchi specials - have done this several times and you will not be disappointed by selection or result. My wife and I have been here probably 10 times and each time have left completely satisfied with smiles on our faces. Desserts are plentiful and displayed on the bar/counter area to tempt you. The service is solid and genuine.
  2. Had dinner here (Penn Quarter location) twice this past week. Originally enticed by Restaurant week offerings, and lured back because the dinner was good enough to simplify and try their burgers. Ricotta gnocchi truffle cream, was some of the best I have had. Literally cut the gnocchi into halves to make it last longer in order to mop up the truffle cream. Chicken pot pie braised chicken, baby portobello mushrooms, pearl onion, cheddar biscuit top - the cheddar biscuit top was more of a flakier, dumpling consistency than a more traditional pie--type of crust. The braised chicken and broth all finished well; not a piece left at our table of 4. Caramel banana bread pudding brown butter ice cream, banana rum caramel - cannot describe it any better than that - enough said. Atmosphere was lively, bar was hoping before the dinner crowd picked up both nights. The circa 1950s black/white themed dining area was comfortable and sounds reasonable. You could talk at a normal tone without shouting as is often the case in open-air type restaurants. Service never missed a beat, and from water service to clearing our tables efficiently everything flowed seamlessly. Overall dining time ~1 hour 15 minutes with 2 rounds of cocktails from the bar. Bar drinks were quick and pretty consistent. Nightly specials are static and looked good; hence why we came back for the Burger Royale Thursday night. Burgers were very good, and the fries made all of us clean our plates.
  3. Opens today at RTC - in former l.Teavana space. &pizza to Open in Reston Town Center Tomorrow by Fatimah Waseem, RestonNow
  4. I was hoping to try the brunch menu at ABC Kitchen, but got confused about the time/date info on the website. Despite arriving just a few minutes after the noon opening time, we were told all of their tables were 'committed'. Fortunately, there was space at the rear bar, which was bright and relatively quiet and looks into the ABC Home store. The $28 3-course prix fixe was a steal, given the quality of the ingredients and the care and attention that were apparent in each dish. We shared each course, so I sampled the following 6 dishes: Cauliflower soup - topped with rye croutons and a few red chili slices. Very good flavor, though it could have stood to be thinned a bit. Roasted beets with homemade yogurt - a beautiful dish made with pretty, colorful beets. A neighbor at the bar commented that she thought it was strawberries and cream - which it did look like. The taste was all fresh beet and thick tangy yogurt - lovely and refreshing. Braised hake with cabbage, chilies, and seaweed - this was one of the most perfectly prepared fish dishes I've had in a long time. The savoy cabbage and seaweed paired nicely with the meatiness of the hake. Duck yolk and ricotta raviolo on ...* ragu - An impressive presentation - a single saucer-sized raviolo with a runny duck yolk topping the ricotta filling. (*damned if I can remember what the meat was, but it was delicious) Cranberry upside down cake - moist and tangy, with poached cranberries and orange creme fraiche on the side. A gorgeous fall/winter dessert. Sundae - salted caramel ice cream, candied peanuts and popcorn, chocolate sauce....what more can I say. Decadence in a bowl. Service was good, attentive but not too formal. Just fine for the bar. Kudos to the young man who handled a complainer unhappy with not getting a table "they should know who people are..." Definitely near the top of my list of best meals of 2011. (I still want to go back for the buttermilk pancakes with berries and lemon curd at brunch. )
  5. Hi All, I organized a beer dinner with Right Proper Brewery and Uprising Muffin Company, on March 25th Wednesday at 7.00pm. The event will be held here at Fishnet-Shaw. This is a unique event because 3 local businesses, we are in the same building as neighbors, are collaborating. I will cook the food, beers are from Right Proper and dessert course will be a creation muffin from Uprising Muffin. Cost is $45 and we take reservations at 202 350 4 350 with a credit card. I attached the planned menu but it will depend on the market. As for the beers, Nathan(head brewer) can not be specific up until few days before the event because of their high turn over of the beers. It will be a fun and one of a kind event considering all the local businesses. I hope to see some of you. Thanks, Ferhat
  6. A new, small, local-sourced market opened up on September 29 at the Rockville Town Center. Dawson's Market is apparently named after the Dawson family, who owned the farmed land under the current structure, though they are an off-shoot of a market in Richmond, VA. It is slightly higher-priced for some things compared to WF (ie. Alden's is $7.29 here), but meats are from farms, they carry Trickling Springs dairy, offer Blue Sky cane sugared soda, local farm apples, etc. I was very happy. The only gimmicky thing they are doing is offering these "Envirocredits" if you walk or bike here. Not sure how it pans but might be helpful for some. Free 1 hour parking in its immediate lot. http://www.dawsonsmarket.com/
  7. A brother/sister team who make and sell lacto-fermented pickles are looking for a space to work in. Have outgrown curent shared kitchen. Since items are fermented needs for the "kitchen" are worktables, space for spices and salts and conditioned space where the pickle barrels can live. A wide hallway would work. Hot line not needed. Cold storage great but not necessary. Ideal landlord is old codger, loves sour pickles, who owns immaculate underground parking garage that stays cool year-round and can't hear loud music. Know this guy?
