  1. My wife and I are heading to London to celebrate President's Day. OK, not really a celebration, but what the hell, we have it off, so why not take advantage of it. It has been a while since I have been. Does anyone know of any hidden gems?
  2. Harold Sakata was the silver medalist in Weightlifting (Light Heavyweight Division (82.5kg)) at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, finishing behind his countryman, Stanley Stanczyk, who won five consecutive world titles. Few of us remember Stancyzk, despite his having been the more accomplished sportsman, but we all remember Sakata. Click
  3. A Chat with Andy Hayler: London's Michelin 3-Star Expert Andy Hayler is the driving force behind this Dining Guide, and this is nothing more than an index into his superior work. Before you commit to any restaurant, always click on the name of the restaurant, and go to his review(s). Then, and only then, will you know if the restaurant is right for you - treat this Dining Guide merely as a different way of organizing your interface with AndyHayler.com: I think it's a pretty good way to approach his website, but it's imperative to remember that Andy is the substance behind all of this. All neighborhoods are organized in a West-to-East flow - the prices are what Andy deems to be a typical, all-inclusive, meal per person. --- Southall - Map Brilliant - website - Twitter - map - (Indian, £40) Twickenham (Twickenham Stadium) - Map Tangawazi - website - map - (Indian, £40) Petersham - Map The Dysart - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (British, £70) Petersham - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (British, £85) Brentford - Map Waterman's Arms - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (British, Japanese, £29) Richmond - Map The Bingham (Bingham Riverhouse) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (British, £75) La Buvette - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (French, £50) - Closed Wembley (Wembley Stadium) - Map KoolCha - website - Instagram - map - (Indian, £30) Chiswick - Map The Crown - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (British, £55) Hedone - website - Twitter - map - (French, £120, Michelin *) Maryam's Cafe - Twitter - map - (Persian, £25) Rokkon - map - (Japanese, £40) La Trompette - website - Twitter - map - (British, £95, Michelin *) Hammersmith - Map L'Amarosa - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Italian, £55) Pentolina - website - map - (Italian £55) Notting Hill - Map Caractère - website - Instagram - map - (French, £80) Core - website - Instagram - map - (British, £110, Michelin **) Parson's Green - Map Pure Indian Cooking - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £42) Rigó - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Italian, £85) West Brompton - Map Harwood Arms - website - Twitter - Instagram - map (British Pub, £70, Michelin *) West Hampstead - Map Hām - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Modern British, £60) Kensington (Natural History Museum, Kensington Palace, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall) - Map Akira - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Japanese, £80) Clarke's - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (American, £100) Cambio de Tercio - website - Twitter - map - (Spanish, £70) Il Portico - website - map - (Italian, £55) Knightsbridge (South Hyde Park) - Map Osteria Romana - website - map - (Italian, £95) Gordon Ramsay Burger (Harrod's) - website - map - (American) Chelsea (Chelsea Bridge, Satchii Gallery, Sloane Square, Royal Court Theatre) - Map Kutir - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £70) Gordon Ramsay - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (French, £170, Michelin ***) Golders Green - Map Café Japan - website - map - (Japanese, £40) Belgravia - Map Hunan - website - map - (Chinese, £100) Kahani - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £95) Marylebone (Baker Street, Regent's Park, University of Westminster, Madame Tussaud's) - Map Ooti - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (South Indian, £70) Mayfair (Savile Row, Bond Street, East Hyde Park) - Map Beck - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Italian, £80) Alain Ducasse (The Dorchester Hotel) - website - map - (French, £160, Michelin ***) Le Gavroche - website - Twitter - map - (French, £150, Michelin **) The Greenhouse - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (French, £145, Michelin **) Kanishka - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £75) Jamavar - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £75) Onima - website - Instagram - map - (Mediterranean, £95) Tamarind - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Indian, £85) Titu (Shepherds Market) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (Japanese, £75) Alyn Williams at the Westbury (The Westbury Hotel) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map - (French, £105, Michelin *) Bonhams - 101 New Bond St - Closed Dec 21, 2018 - (British, £80, Michelin *) Soho - Map Westminster (Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Charing Cross) - Map 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo (The Grand at Trafalgar Square) - website - map The Curry Room (The Rubens Hotel) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Kerridge's Bar and Grill (The Corinthia Hotel) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map St. James's (Buckingham Palace) - Map Aquavit - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Farzi Café - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Ritz (Ritz-Carlton Hotel) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Imperial Treasure - website - Instagram - map The City - Map Kym's (Bloomberg Arcade) - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Shoreditch - Map Brat - website - map Leroy - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Southwark - Map Santo Remedio - website - Twitter - Instagram - map Limehouse - Map The Narrow - website - Twitter - map Multiple Locations Chinese BaoziInn - website - (3-5 area locations (Chinese, £60)) Hakkasan - Twitter - Instagram (Hanway Place, Mayfair, (Chinese, £85, Michelin *)) Fish and Chips Deep Blue Fish and Chips - website - Twitter (20-50 area locations) Indian Hankie's - Hankie's Cafe - website - Twitter - Instagram (Soho, Shaftesbury) Thai Patara - website - Twitter - Instagram (6-10 area locations)
  4. It's funny how one thing leads to another. Because of Jim's post, I'm watching "Rain Man" for the second time in my life. (By the way, this film is a whole lot deeper than I thought it was.) All because I was thinking about Daniel Tammet, and there's one thing I don't understand: In his Wikipedia entry, it says that Tammet: --- In his mind, Tammet says, each positive integer up to 10,000 has its own unique shape, colour, texture and feel. He has described his visual image of 289 as particularly ugly, 333 as particularly attractive, and pi, though not an integer, as beautiful. The number 6 apparently has no distinct image yet what he describes as an almost small nothingness, opposite to the number 9 which he calls large, towering, and quite intimidating. He also describes the number 117 as "a handsome number. It's tall, it's a lanky number, a little bit wobbly".[9][32] In his memoir, he describes experiencing a synaesthetic and emotional response for numbers and words.[9] --- What I don't understand ... is it the actual, mathematical quantity that Tagget finds ugly/beautiful, or is it the look of the Arabic Numerals that he finds visually repulsive/attracitve? My guess is that it's the Arabic Numeral representations - I can see the numbers "117" and "333" as being "beautiful," and the number "289" as being "ugly," but only in their Arabic notation; not as a string of bits. I distinctly remember Tagget telling David Letterman that he looked like a "117" - Letterman is tall and lean, and this would be intuitive. I'm pretty sure 117 is a prime number, and mathematically speaking, I can't imagine what's so beautiful about that as opposed to, say, 113 (which I'm guessing is also prime) - it must be the Arabic representations, right? Does what I'm saying make sense? More than anything else, Tammet comes across to me as a genuinely nice person - I've seen him on numerous occasions, and have paid close attention to what he does, says, and how he acts - he is just an all-around good human being, and that's what impresses me about him the most.
  5. Steve Hackett is a rather underrated guitarist. Enjoy. From 'Foxtrot' - 'Horizons' From 'Nursery Chryme' - 'Return of the Giant Hogweed' From 'Voyage of the Acolyte' - Hackett's masterpiece 'Shadow of the Hierophant' From another solo work 'Spectral Mornings'. Perhaps one of his most singular iconic pieces he's ever written.
  6. When I was in my teens, I had one, and only one, favorite rock singer: David Bowie. He was the solo act which twisted, and turned, and seemed the most complex to me, while at the same time being just a pleasure to listen to, and he was there at the right time. Rest in peace, David.
  7. Oops, and I've even been to the Tate Modern - I saw the coolest bottom-floor artwork there (I also saw "Whaam!") It was called "Marsyas" (etymology) by Anish Kapoor, and was, by *far*, the largest indoor piece of art I've ever seen - it was literally impossible to see the entire thing at once. To say it was "awesome" doesn't do it justice. <--- That's a person standing on the left.
  8. The great Russian baritone, Dmitri Hvorotovsky, known primarily in America through his recordings of Tschaikovsky and Verdi, passed away this week after a 2 1/2-year struggle with brain cancer. The Metropolitan Opera's loving tribute to Hvorotovsky is here: "Dmitri Hvorotovsky." (Do take a few minutes and watch the videos - the second video was when Hvorotovsky only had about six more months to live.) 9. Lawrence Harvey was a South African who was born in Lithuania. 1962 - as Raymond Shaw in "The Manchurian Candidate" - Feb 30, 1972 - as Mr. Macy in "The Caterpillar" on ""The Night Gallery" - I've been saying this since I was a child, and have still never seen anything more chilling on TV: Oct 30, 2015 - "Night Gallery's 'Earwig' Episode Might Be Greatest Horror TV Episode Ever" by Julian Spivey on thewordwebzine.weekly.com
  10. I am kind of shocked there is no Queen thread just yet. A great body of work (mostly). Most people know all of their biggest hits, and I was a sucker for "Under Pressure" (1981) from the first moment I heard it. Enjoy.
  11. And inspired historian, always relevant: But Palamabron called down a Great Solemn Assembly, That he who will not defend Truth, may be compelled to Defend a Lie, that he may be snared & caught & taken.
  12. In what is one of the biggest upsets in all of sports in 2016, Sam Querry - an American, which seems almost doubly impossible - has beaten Novak Djokovic, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5). "American Sam Querrey Stuns No. 1 Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon" on espn.go.com
  13. I'm a huge Beatles fan-- so much of what they created was pure genius. George Martin was indeed "the fifth Beatle". I couldn't find the original studio recording online, but here's a live version of "Yesterday", a song that wouldn't be what it is without the addition of George's strings: "George Martin Dies: Paul McCartney Credits Producer with 'Yesterday' Success in Touching Tribute" by Lewis Dean on ibtimes.co.uk I wish I had been a fly on the wall during those recording sessions.
  14. Why, you may ask, is Don thinking about Beau Brummell at 7 AM on a Wednesday morning? That's a very good question, and unfortunately, I don't have a good answer. Everyone has heard the name "Beau Brummell," but I suspect not many people know who he really was. The Wikipedia link to his story reveals an absolutely fascinating portrait of a man who was clearly a progenitor of OCD: * He took five hours each day to get dressed. * He polished his boots with Champagne. * It goes on. One thing he is credited for is having influenced the modern men's suit and tie - I'm not sure if this is a good thing, or a bad thing, but it's nevertheless pretty darned important. Anyway, you should have a look - the final stages of his life should come as a surprise to no one.
  15. We would like to find five or six places for lunch in these neighborhoods, including one or two vegetarian options. We are staying at a hotel at the north end of Tottenham Court Road and would like to walk to the restaurants.
  16. here is a half hour of Heston Blumenthal of the Fat Duck 'Perfecting " chili con carne. No doubt it tastes good and has the layers of flavor I think are the trademark of great chili, but there seems to be a few blasphemous things going on here. if you have a 1/2 hour, dig in. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xndw1x_in-search-of-perfection-s2e6-chili-con-carne_lifestyle#.UToduRyKKSo
  17. Any recommendations for dinner at or near Southbank Centre?
  18. I wasn't sure whether to post this here or under the London thread in 'The Intrepid Traveler.' Anyway, here's the situation: Our 26-yr-old daughter and her BF live in London, in Farringdon. I would like to give them a gift card to a restaurant in London, but I'm clueless as far as the restaurant scene there. To be honest, I don't even know if it's possible to buy a gift card to a restaurant in England. I am hoping that those of you on the board who are knowledgeable will be able to provide guidance. They are omnivores and appreciate almost every cuisine. A place that is cool and hip would be better than stuffy and staid. We were thinking to spend about $200. Thanks for your help!
