  1. Let's say that someone who is prone to motion sickness and is traveling with an 8 year old who may or may not have the same tendency was planning a trip on the Auto Train and wanted to have a light lunch before boarding. (You can turn in your car as early as 11:30 am and they start letting passengers aboard at 2:30 PM, the train doesn't depart until 4 pm.) It looks like Lorton Station is nearby and that Pane E Vino got warm, if mixed, reviews here previously. Fireside Grill is not open for lunch on our departure day. Is there anywhere else I should be considering? Thanks!
  2. Interesting development here....in the (hopefully) last stage of a pandemic, a non-chain specializing in "Modern American food from a fresh seasonal menu served along side craft cocktails and local brews" sounds like an adventure. The previous tenant was the very good Fireside Grill, so expectations will be moderately high. Home Town Bar and Grill appears to be not a chain, so it will be fun to watch it sort through its growing pains in a just-reemerging market. Stay tuned for updates.
  3. I am starting a book group through my library (Kingstowne Library - Fairfax County) on April 6th called Books & Brews in partnership with Forge Brew Works where the group will meet. Our first meeting will be April 6th at 7:00pm and will continue on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. We are in the process of choosing which book to read. I've selected three and are asking those interested in attending to pick one. All of the titles are readily available in the Fairfax County Library system in a number of formats. If you have a library card, simply stop by your branch or go online to request a copy. If you don’t have a card, you may get one by bringing in a photo ID with your current address; they’ll get you a card and a copy of the book. Take a look and send email me here by Feb 24. Votes will be tallied and I'll follow-up to respondents with the selected title on Feb 25. This should allow you time to come to the meeting having read the chosen book. Feel free to come with suggestions you'd like to read next time. The three titles to choose from are: A Train In Winter: an extraordinary story of women, friendship, and resistance in occupied France by Caroline Moorehead. (Biography/History) Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (Classic) The Lifeboat – by Charlotte Rogan (Fiction)
  4. In the space formerly occupied by the credible Pane e Vino, there is now Casa Tequila. It appears to be the second outpost of the original Casa Tequila in Purcellville, and offers what might be the suburbs' most extensive tequila menu. With the same outdoor seating as Pane e Vino and with such a selection of tequila, there should be some pleasant happy hours for the Lorton Station residents. The menu -- which I admit that I have not yet sampled -- looks like a decent attempt at "Mex" with a few "Tex" thrown in to attract the locals. This area is not big on true Mexican flavors, which is a shame, but here might be the place to sample some genuine dishes. The mole ranchero and arroz con pollo will be on my short list when I visit. Which will be soon.
  5. Located just off Gunston Road in Gunston Plaza next to the US Post Office, this place surprisingly has 13 locations in the area. The pizza is good as are the subs, pasta and daily lunch specials which are typically $8-10. Service is consistently good as well. Atmosphere is typical vinyl green-checkered table clothes and the Italian flag, tacky Italian inspired, framed pictures and wall paper adorn the walls. Kitchen is somewhat open and the place is always clean and pretty busy for lunch - I have probably eaten here 25 times, and oddly just now adding this post. If you happen to be in Lorton and want someplace easy to park and dine, you have found it; very reasonably priced.
  6. I planned on having lunch with my kids today & considered going here, since it's close to where my son lives. But, being lazy & not wanting to drive & thinking it might be crowded after the review in WaPo 2 days ago & not having too much experience with Filipino food, we decided to try The Corner, a Filipino restaurant in Lorton that's been on my list. I wish I'd gone sooner, it was very good-totally out of the way location with 3 other tables occupied while we were there. We split an order of the lumpia shanghai & the pancit bihon w/ shrimp, E ordered the chicken adobo, T got the kare-kare (which came w/ a large pile of shrimp paste!) & I got the doborito sliders-Filipino chicken adobo in plantain buns with MASH’s garlic-mayo sauce, served with maduros. Everything was delicious (we shared) w/ the chicken adobo being the universal favorite (less soupy/stewy than other chicken adobo I've tried). Although I was stuffed & not really a dessert person, I tried the turon (maduro/jackfruit springroll w ube (purple yam) ice cream. This wouldn't be a good choice for vegetarians, but I enjoyed the dishes I tried & plan to return. When I eventually make it to Bistro 1521, I'll have a benchmark.
  7. Not sure what's happening here. Across the street is Casa Tequila, a second outpost of Casa Tequila in Purcellville. Taquila is trending in Springfield-Lorton....Viva Tequila is opening in the Concord Center on Backlick Road across from Mike's, and about 25 feet from Eleni's. There are two or three other Viva Tequila restaurants in the area, but I don't know if they're a national chain, a local chain, or separate mom-and-pops that like the name Viva Tequila. Springfield already has plenty of mediocre Tex-Mex, from Chuy's at the Mall, to El Paso and La Hacienda in the Backlick corridor, to the deplorable Austin Grill in the Whole Foods plaza at Old Keene Mill and Rolling Rds. Back to the topic, I'm sorry to see Fireside Grill close. It was dependable, if unspectacular. Its cousin is Hopsfrog Grill in Burke, which is similarly unspectacular.
  8. I have eaten at the Fireside Grill a number of times, and I've never been disappointed. It competes for my attention with the very competent Pane e Vino across the street, but Pane e Vino is closed on Mondays....so I stopped in for flat-bread takeout at Fireside Grill. The highlights of the flat-bread menu are the Margherita and the Chorizo. Both were extremely good, better than any pizza in the general Springfield-Burke-Lorton sprawl. I'm still devouring and licking my fingers. Yum! The wood-grilled steaks and seafood are also very good here. I have also had the Mixed Grill and the Lamb Chops, and I'll keep coming back (mostly on Mondays). The bar area in the back is nice and tidy, attracting some of the local professional crowd for happy hour. Brunch List alert -- the buffet is the star of the Lorton area on Sundays. (Notice I left the Springfield area out of this geographic reference because of the sensational dim sum at Golden Hong Kong!). This little patch of Lorton Station, with its faux Town Center concept, has some decent options for eats. Great Harvest Bread Co. has one of its outposts here as well, as is the credible Lasani Kabob. It's also a foot traffic friendly place, with plenty of parking for guests.
  9. I am on a mission to taste my way through southern Fairfax County and I've contributed some Springfield reviews over the past year. I have eaten a few times at Pane e Vino in what appears to be the Lorton Town Center, if that's what it's called, but it sure looks like it's trying to be one of those now ubiquitous Town Centers popping up everywhere. DR will have to expand the restaurant guide to include a Lorton listing now. Pane e Vino is family owned, and therefore checks the box of not being a chain, so that's the first positive sign. It has its own pizza oven, so that's the second positive sign. It has become so successful that it bought the Americanized Chinese place next door and expanded into it, so that's the third positive sign. And I haven't even gotten into the food yet. As for the food, well, there are many family owned Italian places from Burke to Lorton, all of them pretty good, from Rafagino's in Burke to Vinny's in Lorton, with Victor's next to the Springfield Whole Foods and San Vito down on Rolling and Braddock. All very good and all very reasonably priced, and none of them near the quality of Pane e Vino. This place is now my go-to Italian restaurant south of Fairfax. Dinner starts with an almost-amouse of a three tastes to go with the fresh bread basket. In one ceramic rectangle was three mini-bowls of olives, olive oil with parmesan, and marinara that tasted fresh made. With the warm breads, this was a hearty start. We accompanied this with a bottle of chardonnay off the daily special list, and since they didn't have the one we ordered, they gave us a more expensive one for the $22 special price. Tonight we ate off the specials, more or less. Girlfriend had the blackened rockfish, covered with marinara, spinach and olives, which to this day is the best rockfish dish I have ever eaten in my life. Absolutely cooked to perfection. I had the chicken frescia, which is a boneless breast of chicken pounded thin and covered with tomato sauce, spinach and mozzarella, served with a side of pasta and red sauce. To die for, and cooked to a juicy and tender doneness that is difficult to achieve for white meat of chicken. This place also has a pizza menu that looks tempting, and with the aforementioned pizza oven, it is one of the specialties of the house. I am torn here, because pizza would make a nice noon meal when split with a friend, and across the street is the Fireside grill, which has some tempting grilled sandwiches and is the subject of another review. And when I think of pizza in the southern part of the county, I am drawn to Delia's....oh well, maybe pizza is another topic for another time. We couldn't have left more satisfied, and a dinner for two (without dessert) with a bottle of wine and tax and tip came to just over $60. I will continue to treat this place as my go-to Italian restaurant this side of Dolce Vita, Da Domenico, Mama's or Bonaroti.
  10. I got takeout from this place a few days ago, the chef used to have restaurants locally, here & Richmond, that I never visited. I ordered chicken ka prow, pad c ew, & a shrimp po boy-results were mixed, but mostly good-shrimp po boy was for my picky daughter, who moaned about not saying she wanted sauce on the side-4/5 large butterflied shrimp, smothered in remoulade, w/ tomatoes on bread, w/ soggy, but well-seasoned fries (I ate most of the shrimp). Tom didn't like his pad c ew, the noodles were clumpy, & it tasted 'heavy'. My chicken ka prow was not what I was used to, modest in size, not much sauce, w/ a fried egg on top-but it was extremely spicy & addictive-chicken was minced (which I like), green beans, not many visible onions or peppers, but VERY hot- I think it must have been white pepper. At first, I dismissed it, but when I went back for seconds, I enjoyed it, although it was definitely at the high end of the heat scale (& I can handle spicy). Not quite sure where to rank it on my list of favored Thai restaurants, but I'll definitely try it again... & I'll include this, although it makes me look exceptionally lazy-I sent my son to pick up the food (one of the few benefits of having a child recently old enough to drive), he told me he accidentally went into the place next door, & asked for takeout, & they sadly told him, not here, must be next door- he said he felt terrible. I constantly wonder how some of these smaller restaurants stay in business, how do they make the rent, when so many people are not eating out that much?
  11. On my way back from the library today, I stopped to pickup a lunch special from Hunan Deli, which despite it's name, serves Korean food. It's in a small strip mall on Telegraph Rd., near Rt. 1. I ordered the jjampong, a spicy seafood soup, & it is delicious. I've had a bit of a cold & congestion, & the taste of this will clear your throat right up! It's a small place w/ just a few tables, but most of them were full with folks happily eating big bowls of yummy looking food. I look forward to going back & trying something else...
  12. South County High School is in Lorton, Virginia, and they have a thriving Art Department in no small part to one of their three Visual Arts Educators, Justyne Fischer (our own member justyfischer). Here is their Facebook page. This is a perfect example of students doing what they love, and earning a good living. Parents: Don't fret if your child is creative - support and nurture their creativity ... it will pay off!
