Sam Cooke sang like an angel come down to earth. His cruelly curtailed career (shot dead in 1964 aged 33) spanned gospel, blues, rock-n-roll, and, towards the end, a kind of jazz-inflected pop that might be at home in Vegas nightclubs. Here are a couple of more-or-less rock-n-roll numbers. "You Send Me" and "Wonderful World" are better known, but I like these more: "Bring it on Home to Me" (1962) "You're Always on my Mind" (1961) Gospel recordings with the Soul Stirrers (1926-), before Sam Cooke was a pop sensation: "Jesus I'll Never Forget" (Recorded in 1954) "I'm Gonna Build Right on that Shore" (Recorded in 1951) Night-Clubby "Fool's Paradise" (Written in 1955, covered on the 1963 Album "Night Beat"): "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" (Written in 1940, covered on the 1961 album, "My Kind of Blues"): As I say, one for the ages.- 5 replies

A couple of things I've watched in the past two years I didn't realize Ted Cassidy was in: Star Trek Season 1, Episode 7: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" - Star Trek Season 1, Episode 18: "Arena" - Voice of the Gorn Captain (Uncredited) - "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" And damned if he wasn't Lurch in "The Addams Family!" Many people (myself included) conflate Ted Cassidy with Richard Kiel. I'll add some things about this talented character actor (I only use the term "character actor" because at 6'9" (Kiel was 7'2"), Cassidy was able to get roles that few other people could. * His Star Trek character in the episode "What are Little Girls Made of?" was an ancient android named Ruk. * The picture from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" shows Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) taking Harvey Logan (played by Cassidy) off-guard, kicking him in the testicles, to quell a resurrection to take over the "Hole in the Wall Gang." * The Lurch photo is, well, Lurch - but Cassidy was also the hand for "Thing." His "You Rang?" trademark was ad-libbed the first time, but made everyone laugh, and was such a hit that it became a fixture in the show. * Though he often played the harpsichord in The Addams Family, he was a competent organist in real life. * He played subsequent roles of "Bigfoot" on "The Six Million Dollar Man" (André The Giant played the creature in the original episode). * After transferring from West Virginia Wesleyan University, Cassidy played basketball for Stetson, and averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds a game over three seasons.

I everyone, I was out in LA a few weeks ago and stopped at Saffron and Rose in Westwood. For an ice cream lover, it was life changing. They mentioned they distribute out here- has anyone seen their ice cream in stores? -
I flew through this Christmas present in a couple of days. This is a riveting read although some may be intially put off by his hip-hop vernacular. Stay with it and you get a poignant story of a guy who's lived a crazy life so far. Restaurant latchkey kid, door-to door jewelry hustling with his parents, juvenile delinquency, lowrider, gambler, financial worker, cooking school at the CIA, hotel chef, food truck and now restaurant owner. Given his success creating the Kogi Taco food truck and subsequent restaurants in Los Angeles all celebrating hybrid cusine, the recipes are all over the map as well in a good way, tweaking comfort food classics with some different techniques/ingredients. I've already made the gumbo (his tribute to Emeril Legassse's Essence Of Emeril cooking show that kickstarted him from a partying low-life to his cooking career) and it turned out great. The flanken short ribs for the Korean grill classic kalbi have been marinating overnight and are on the menu for today.
