Location and Rates - Website This is a 15 story hotel, in an beautiful ornate building right across the street from City Hall. The lobby is small, but well appointed, and there were always many staff available to help. The car valet area is also small, given the corner on which the hotel is situated, and can lead to backups on the street. However, if you pull around the side, street parking has been set aside as a loading area for guests. Also, if you continue straight down Juniper for a block and a half, you can park in the convention center parking garage for over $10 cheaper per 24 hours than at the valet. Of course, you can't enter and leave for that savings, so you'll have to be prepared to leave your car there. This is no problem due to the location of the hotel, which is central to many of the sights. We walked to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, etc. We walked to the Italian Market. We walked to South St. We walked to Reading Terminal market. I think we could have walked to the Rocky Steps/Art Museum. Anyway, you can't beat the location. There are 3 elevators, and given the size of the hotel and the speed in which they move, the hotel could stand to have 1 or 2 more. Be prepared to wait. Also, for safety reasons, you need your room key to get above the 2nd floor, so make sure you get plenty of keys when you check in. The room was "recently renovated", and included 2 queen beds. Neither large nor small, it adequately accommodated 4 adults and one 5 yr old for a 1-night stay. The room was modern, black and white color scheme, and had comfortable beds and pillows. The shower and toilet were separated from the sink area, making it easier for multiple people to get ready at the same time. Free wifi, with the option to pay for enhanced speed. Working and responsive thermostat. There's also a small, but useful, 7-11 one block away.- 4 replies

Short notice trip to the area this weekend. Spending just one night downtown (Loews). I've never been to Philadelphia, so I'd appreciate a couple of suggestions somewhat close to the hotel. (Midtown?) No real restrictions, but my wife is not as enthusiastic as I am about seafood, and casual attire is preferred.

Location and Rates for Tonight - Website Absolutely great report. Thank you! btw...getting that hotel for 100 bucks is a steal I have not been able to snag on priceline in 4 years. You paid at least half, if not a third. It's a rare deal. Best I've done is the Hyatt Penn's Landing for 70 bucks....out of season. Good for you! -
Ate at the new Barbuzzo twice recently, its a great choice if you are staying near City Center. The Uovo pizza was really rich and really good - toppings (egg, truffle, brussel sprouts, guanciale, caciocavallo, fior di latte and a 'special' white sauce) being the best part and the crust a serviceable cross between liberty tavern and orso/pupatella. Had two regular dishes; bone marrow and a pork pasta dish, both were on the larger side for tapas portions. I liked both, but probably would order something else if I went again...nearly everything on the menu sounded interesting. Pretty crowded both times, don't expect to walk in and sit...unless you are a party of two and willing to sit at the bar or counter in front of the kitchen (which is pretty entertaining), and even then a wait is likely. -
Was up there Sun and Mon. Had dinner Sun at a great new BYOB, Lolita (13th & Walnut). Actually, it's BYOT (T for Tequila) since the menu is Mexican. You bring the booze, they provide the freshly made pitchers of mixes (besides traditional, they currently have strawberry-basil (really good) and watermelon mint). I was pretty skeptical about the menu, since it's sorta upscale Mexican-fusion, but everything was excellent. I had squid stuffed with a chorizo and chickpea mixture and then carne asada with a roasted plaintain and poblano crema. Both delicious, as were the other plates I sampled. Wish this place were in DC. As a bonus, Lolita is directly across from the amazing Capogiro Gelato (no trip to Philly is complete without a stop at Capogiro). They keep getting farther out with the flavors, though. Black truffle gelato? (I nearly gagged from the small tasting I had of it). -
Adam Bernbach suggested I visit Apothecary when I was in Philly. If you know Adam, and you know his taste in music and cocktails, you'll know why he recommended it. The list is full of complex cocktails. I just happened to hit it on the night that the two guys who does similar things to Adam were not there. I tasted three different cocktails that hit the range from Dimetapp-flavored (Aviation) to slightly margarita-like but without the crappy rum (La Paloma) to a drink Papa Hemingway-style - citrusy and only slightly boozy tasting (La Floradita). They were also out of a ton of stuff to make their version of a Manhattan, a pisco sour, or gin ramos fizz. If you hit Apothecary it sounds like it is much better to hit it on a weekend when the two crazy bartenders are there. But even so, it was a nice place to relax after a long week.
