  1. Bluestone Lane is the latest coffee chain to move into the DC market. They have coffee shops in Georgetown, S. Dupont, and a cafe in the West End. Apparently they have received an infusion of investor cash and are looking to expand to 100 locations in the next three years. They currently have 30 locations in NY, NJ, PA, CA and DC. I walked into the Dupont location for an afternoon cuppa. Nice airy store on 18th (even though the address is Connecticut Ave). I ordered a cup of their drip coffee and pulled out my wallet to pay, reached for a $5 bill and the cashier said: "sorry we are a cashless store." I responded: "what about the unbanked who don't have access to adequate banking?" She kinda tilted her head like I was insane, smiled, and said: "most people have banks." I said: "actually, there are millions of people in America who are unbanked." She kinda smiled again and turned away. First time customer, last time customer. But Tweaked, you ask, how was the coffee. mmm, their drip (which was freshly brewed, I had to wait a minute or two) was basically Starbucks level drip. Mediocre at best. Actually it kinda tastes like the coffee they have in urns at the grill at Hanes Point Golf Course.
  2. Zinburger has signed a lease to take over part of the space vacated by Oriental East in Silver Spring, joining District Taco: "District Taco Signs Lease for Space in the Blairs" by Mike Diegel on sourceofthespring.com
  3. There's a place on H and 12th (or thereabouts) NE called "Philadelphia Water Ice." Has anyone popped in there? I LOVE water ice, but haven't made it there yet...
  4. Jersey Mike's was not found in the Multiple Locations Dining Guide, so I thought I'd fire up a thread... I like this place and would rank it ahead of Potbelly in the subs/sandwiches category. The standard, to me, is the Italian Cold Cut (ICC) and I use that as my benchmark when comparing places. Jersey Mikes follows what I call the 'wet tube" philosophy, where an ICC sub is would tight and has lots of wet stuff like shredded lettuce, oil, vinegar, mayo and 'hots'. Contrast this to the loose and relative dry subs at White House subs in Atlantic City, NJ - and you'll get the drift. Growing up in Rockville, the great submarine war between Ollie's and Twinbrook Deli produced an endless supply of great wet tube ICCs. They still do and if you can't get to Rockville, Jersey Mike's is the next best thing. Being a huge chain, of course there can be some variation between locations but in my experience the food is pretty consistent between the 5+ locations I've visited. (the people making it, not so much.) I recommend asking them to go light on the oil and vinegar; sometimes the bottles are mistaken for cocktail mixers...and the sub suffers. But if done right, you get a tangy ICC that's sloppy but not disintegrating. You may disagree below
