I'll vote for Taste of Tandoor. I had lunch there once last summer with a friend, and I enjoyed their food. -
My wife and I recently 'discovered' Udupi Palace and have been several times. Great stuff, cheap, and close enough for it to hit our rotation (we live in Laurel). Plus, the neighborhood vibe is so mixed and frothy and loaded with piles of ethnicity. Recommended. -
It was one of "those" nights. I had a glass of wine early, and couldn't get motivated to go out restaurant hopping. I wanted to get a good night's sleep, get up early, and get some things accomplished. There could be no doubt - it was time for carryout at Cafe Taj. Over the years, I've been to Cafe Taj many times, although I haven't been much lately. I've always found it pleasant and reliable, it not ground-breaking or exciting, and that's exactly what I was after last night. Karahi Kabob Lamb ($14.95) Eggplant Bharta ($12.95) Fresh Garlic Kulcha ($2.95) Raita ($2.95) Double order of pickles Came home, dumped everything into a mixing bowl, poured a lusty glass of wine, scarfed everything down with a tablespoon, left half of it, didn't remember what I ate five minutes later, bang, dinner is done. The next time your always-late sister causes you to have some time to kill in the Herndon area, duck into Aditi Spice Depot on Elden Street. You'll find they have fresh curry leaves (score!) and a new idli steamer to replace your tired, post-apocalyptic stage prop that has become your old device. On the way out, ask the cashier where in Herndon is worth checking out for Indian cuisine. He'll recommend, among other places, Paradise Indian which is "just up the street" (he'll point to the left). When your sister finally arrives, and you realize the restaurant she chose is not open for lunch on Sunday, it will all be OK. You'll have a backup plan just down the street (point left). Today's expansive buffet was, at $12, a flavorful bargain. Normally not a fan of the spoon-n-go method of eating, I'd return here in a heartbeat. Exceptional flavor and freshness throughout, standouts being gobhi fry (cauliflower), goat curry, coconut chutney, lime pickle, and anything with chick peas or the exceptional house-made paneer. Numerous servers kept the buffet astutely clean and rightfully filled. Unlimited 10 ounce bottles of water seemed to be included in the price of the buffet, helpful since several dishes featured deeply spicy creations. We found the service personally attentive and friendly for a buffet. Soiled plates disappeared quickly, waters replaced rapidly, and the bag of ice I requested for the cooler in my car was met with not only a smile, but with a waterproof-wrapped version reflecting exceptional care. By the time we left around 2:00, we were the only non-Indian patrons in a very packed, very satisfied patron restaurant brimming with efficiency. I have been getting my Indian delivery fix from this place and it's very good. I have never been to the spot and don't really know where in Burtonsville it is, but it's delicious. Deliveries have been prompt and accurate Website Garam masala wings should be a thing everywhere. They should come with raita without asking, which they might but I ask for extra raita every time so I don't know. The naan is as crisp as you could expect from delivery. I bet it's great dining in. I had never heard of Chicken 65 but I guess it's a thing. A delicious spicy breaded chicken nugget thing here. Curries are great, with various choices of rice, chickpeas, salad, etc for various charges or not. Lamb curries have been excellent. Tons of food for the money but also delicious. Samosa and pakora are pretty standard but the standard is good. As important as anything, the gulab jamun is great. I love a small bite or two for dessert without being weighed down in price or calories. Some Indian places can't get this right, but it's good here. Without throwing any other local indian delivery under the bus, this is the one to get by far. They are on grubhub but not eat24, which is great because you aren't accidentally encouraged to give yelp 2 bucks. -
I couldn't find a topic on this place. If it exists, my apologies. We went to Cusbah late last week, and were impressed. The food was very good, extremely flavorful (they were not afraid to use heat), and extremely affordable. My goat vindaloo was $11, while my wife's chicken tikka makhni was $9, and it was more than enough food for us. They had some decent drink specials as well (and some appalling sounding mixed drinks, which involved Goldschlager and Jagermeister mixed together). I wouldn't travel to go here, but it's definitely the best Indian food I've had on the Hill (which is, admittedly, a low bar). -
Pursuant to Don's exhortation to post our most recent dining experience, I offer the following commentary on Delhi Dhaba's Bethesda location. We had the buffet lunch there on Saturday. A massive dog-themed street fair had closed the street (Woodmont), and Delhi Dhaba was one of the few restaurants with enough outdoor seating to accommodate four adults, a child, and an infant. The buffet was small and nondescript, but contained nothing offensive: decent butter chicken; okay tandoori chicken; dal; a potato/pepper dish that was pretty good; palak paneer that was a little light on the paneer (had to go fishing with the ladle). There were a couple other things, but I can't remember what they were. Naan was a bit dry. I did enjoy the gulab jamun for dessert. It wasn't as sickly-sweet as that dessert (along with many other Indian desserts) often is. Service was par for the Indian restaurant course: Not what one would call attentive or speedy, but no one punched me in the face. So, not bad. But since I have to get in my car to go there, I'd veer eastward and head to Woodlands to satisfy my buffet itches every time. -
Today we went to Chak De India for lunch. They had an interesting selection of different chicken, vegetarian, very fresh soft bread, pakora and papad as well as perfectly made rice, crisp salad fixings and desserts. They didn't have as many items as Angeethi does on their Sunday Brunch with the omelettes made to order, pancakes and waffles but they are new... The owner/manager Robin was very nice and it shows in the decor, food, service and overall I was impressed. They kept the hot naan full as well as my soda glass so I was a happy camper. They have buffet every day for 9.95 m-f and 12.95 for sat/sun their ph# is 703 444 0381. They are located at the back of the plaza when you see chik-fil-a go straight back you'll see them next to that excellent little persian foodstuff shop. I assure you they spice everything nicely so go there and enjoy!
