  1. Had a delicious lunch today during my first visit to Bom on 18th st in the heart of Adams Morgan. It has a rather large menu for a korean-fried chicken place with a similar menu to the BonChon chain plus a bunch of other appetizers and entrees and sides (sides may be identical to BonChon). The food is legit tasty. We started with pickled radish and kimchi. The friendly waiter asked whether we preferred fresh or old/sour kimichi and when we couldn't decide he brought both. Both were very good - I liked the fresh one better while my friend enjoyed the more sour/funky one better. Next we were served a large stone bowl of bibimbap while we waited for our wings. The bibimbap had a nice over easy egg in the middle surrounded by a mix of fresh veggies and our choice of protein - spicy chicken (there are 3-4 other choices including a vegetarian option). It was very flavorful served with gochujang spicy sauce on the side. It was ample for 2 to share or would make a whole hefty meal for one. Very fresh and well made - the stone bowl was great to get the crispy rice on the bottom. Finally our wings arrives - we got a mix of wings and 2 drumsticks - half spicy and half soy. Very similar to BonChon and equally yummy. The spicy had some real heat but an enjoyable amount, not melt your face spicy. They also have an ongoing 20% dine-in deal because I guess they get a lot of carryout. It was mostly empty during lunch. I will say the decor was an interesting mix - they have a clubbish bar, then a ton of TVs like a sports bar, and then a bunch of tables for more of a sitdown restaurant vibe. Regardless, we both thought the food was great and a good price for the neighborhood. We plan to add it to the lunch rotation.
  2. Skip mid range and go decidedly low range in Chinatown! XO Kitchen 148 Hester Street New York, NY 10013 212/965-8645
  3. No but I tried the similarly named Vocelli's once. Never tried it again. It's been so long that I don't really remember what put me off. Just mediocre all around. Before Paisanos opened up a location near me, I would order my pies from a local joint called Juliano's and I liked them but my main beef was the cheese to sauce to crust ratio. Too much crust, too much cheese, but not enough of the red stuff. Tried Paisanos on a whim and never went back. Now all this said, I'm someone who has never strayed from a plain slice. Okay I'll make an exception for Neapolitan Margheritas and White Clam Pies. So of the three joints I've mentioned, I can only speak for the plain jane cheese offerings. Still, of the three, Paisanos wins in basically every metric that actually matters (to me, anyway). The cheese to sauce ratio is spot-on, and I never ran into the problem of the first bite having that gloriously stretchy cheese that pulls away from your mouth in long strands before letting go and then the subsequent bites being... not that. Every bite is that. The sauce has a nice subtle kick to it. You might not even notice it your first bite, but it slowly reveals itself over time. I don't want to give you the wrong idea. This isn't spicy pizza. It is pizza that uses spices in a way I enjoy. It's good eats. It's not going to stand up to the better DC area joints like WiseGuys or 2Amys or (I could go on)... But it's damn good for munching on in the privacy of your own home This is just my experience from my location. I cannot speak for any of the non-Alexandria locations. On my Facebook, I recently mentioned I had a pizza delivered in record time: 16 minutes. It was from Paisanos
  4. I was debating whether or not this place deserved its own thread, but I recently learned that it is under new ownership and has a new Cantonese chef. The menu is still the same -- until the end of the month -- but the food is actually edible. Carry-out tonight was Hunan Vegetables, Kung Pao Tofu, Garlic Seafood Combo, Crispy Shredded Chicken, and Spicy Eight Treasures. No need to go dish-by-dish, but the quality upgrade over the previous version of this place is significant. Lady KN and I agreed that we would order every one of these dishes again. No, this is not a destination restaurant, but thankfully, this plaza has a legitimate Americanized Chinese option to go with Kanjana Thai as not-too-bad places to eat.
  5. Went to Akbar late in December with friends. It's not the best of the best Indian place, and it is all the way out in suburbia (Columbia) on a road that is often congested and not terribly close to residential housing, but still. It is pretty good on the actual food front. It's a somewhat tired dining room, and at times the service can be slow, but the food satisfies the craving for pretty good Indian if you happen to be in Columbia. Worth a sample to see what you think. Never tried them for carryout. According to their website, they have a location in Baltimore....who knew?
  6. I have used the services of Quality Discount Tire & Auto in Kensington, MD twice in the last two years. My most recent visit was this morning and I emerged just as pleased as on my first visit. Each time I have received excellent, prompt service and advice. The prices are extremely reasonable: On both visits my final bill was considerably less than what I would have expected and probably would have been charged elsewhere. The owner/manager, Steve Colburn, is a very nice, entertaining guy who has a great deal of experience and really knows what he's about. I would recommend Quality Discount Tire to anyone without reservation. Well, maybe one reservation: the waiting room leaves a lot to be desired -- it's tiny and cramped and has no amenities except that it's right there by the front desk and Steve's banter with the customers and staff can be quite entertaining. On the other hand, you won't have to spend much time in it either. My visit this morning to buy a new tire and have all my tires rotated and balanced took exactly 30 minutes. 7. Been here probably 3-4 times this year. I always wait for a fresh pie before ordering. Crust is good, generally not soggy, usually crisp. Plain cheese only. Sauce is generally under-seasoned (have they heard of salt?) and less than inspiring. Not bad, but not worth the calories unless you are desperate. Need to try Vace one of these days.
  8. My husband recently discovered this place. The food is amazing They serve tacos, pupersas, fajitas and other delcious treats. You must get the lengua tacos, the meat is tender and flavorful. The tacos come with harboiled egg, avocado, lettus and onions. Really delicous! Tacos were super cheap, something like My favorite pupusa was the mixed one with pork, cheese and beans. The loroco was also decent. They come with a delicous vinegary coleslaw Husband got the shrimp fajitas that came with roasted vegetables and homemade corn tortillas. They were super thick. Tacos are about 1.50, pupusas are 2. a meals of two pupusas, a taco and fajitas set us back 18 bucks. Not bad! Fair warning the service is sloooooow. Bring a crossword puzzle, book or a charming companion to talk to because you will probably have a half hour wait minimum. Also had a service snafu where they gave us the wrong check but we got that sorted out. La Chiquita 940 E West Hwy Takoma Park, MD 20912 (301) 270-0366
