Nice lunch today at http://pokepapa.com Much better than the Annandale version of Poke. Similar to the California places I wrote about...choice of rice (brown, while or black) and/or salad, plus scoops of fish (tofu and chicken also) and toppings. Big difference they had 3-4 varieties of salmon and Ahi already tossed with dressing. A Korean spiced version, basic sweet with green onions, and a siracha mayo mix...plus plain Ahi and Salmon, cooked scallops, some ceviche, etc. I had 3 scoops trying the Korean, basic, and siracha. This saves the step of tossing the fish with your choice of sauce...but having 3 different flavors confuses things inside the bowl. Lots of choices of toppings, including fake crab salad, seaweed, ginger, etc. The crunchy toppings are self service, after you pay. Overall, very good. Would be a great place to have your first Poke! I left very satisfied. -

We tried Noodle King Restaurant last week. It is on northbound New Hampshire Avenue, between White Oak and Colesville. It's hidden between a pizza shop and a beer & wine store. Parking and entrance are around back. The cross street is Hollywood Avenue. The lot is across Hollywood from JR Wright plant nursery. They have been there for a few years but it was my first visit. My folks heard about it from their firends. Family owned, authentic Cantonese food. Keep that in mind when ordering--they definitely do a better job with southern dishes. Meal #1, dinner for 4. We ordered: beef satay--beef a little chewy, probably deep fried instead of charcoal grilled, would not order again chicken wings--great crispy batter but served by itself, sauce (like Thai sweet chili) would make it better Ja-Jain Mein(Beijing Style)--good egg noodles but sauce had muted flavor, not pungent with garlic and chilies like it should be; corrected with some of their house made chili paste Beef Chow Fun (Dry)--great job, not too oily, just enough char on the beef Seafood Pan Fried Noodle--outside of noodles was crispy but middle was soggy; sauce was watery and goopy at the same time. I would ask them for sauce on the side next time. Meal #2, lunch for 2. sweet and sour spicy (pickled) cabbage Diced Chicken & Salted Fish Fried Rice--great flavor, a little julienned lettuce for crunch; salted fish was reconstituted well and not too salty Beef Chow Fun (Dry)--i liked it so much I had to order it again On my next visit, I plan to check out their roast duck and Hong Kong style noodles.- 7 replies

Enjoyed a good meal at this new fast casual place in Mosaic a few weeks ago. The three of us each got different meats with sides (lentils, etc). The Naan was well made and buttery. I don't recall all the details, but it was hearty and reasonable. Sauces were not too spicy but flavorful and unboring. I do recall this weird automatic hand wash contraption thing in the dining room. It was awesome. -
I'm not sure when Sol y Mar closed, but Gisele's Creole Cuisine, a Haitian place, has apparently opened in the Royal Mile space per Robert Dyer's blog. -
"At Mas', Jonathan Gold Finds Hearty, Spicy Food Just Like Your Chinese Islamic Mother Used To Make" by Jonathan Gold on latimes.com --- For our Washington, DC contingent: It's coincidental that Jonathan Gold chose to review Mas' this week, because I was just moments away from reporting on a Halal Chinese restaurant on our side of the country: Kabab King, which is on Columbia Pike in Falls Church, directly across the highway from Meaza. Kabab King also serves what they call "Desi Chinese," Desi being an Indian term that means something close to "From Us." I walked into Kabab King, and it seems more Eastern Indian than Chinese, but more than anything else, it seems to be Bangladeshi (don't forget, Bangladesh used to be "East Pakistan" until 1971, when it became an independent nation). They have a lunch buffet, and I'm not going to necessarily recommend the restaurant from what I saw, but it does exist. -
I wanted to go to Thai Nakorn today, but I was overruled by my daughter, so we got takeout from Chef Huang's. I have lots of leftover Hunan shrimp to make into soup tomorrow (there's always a plethora of broccoli). -
I couldn't be happier, even knowing nothing about this place. Anyone know any details? "Korean Restaurant Coming To Woodmont Triangle" by Aaron Kraut on bethesdanow.com Don't get me wrong, the constant infux of pizza and burger places in Bethesda is exciting and all (where's a sarcasm font when you need one), but it's so nice to see a place opening up that really fills a need. -
