  1. If a policeman is at a party, and sees someone smoking marijuana, (s)he shouldn't be responsible for doing anything about it. It's fine to file it away in memory for the next time they're at work, but to expect them to be on-guard 24 hours a day - breaking up the party to make an arrest - for the smallest of crimes, is wrong - wrong to the people at the party, and sure as hell wrong to the policeman. Obviously, exceptions can be made for when someone's health is in jeopardy, but to force anyone to be on-guard day-and-night is just wrong. Sincerely, Your 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year moderator
  2. It's ironic that I received a citation this morning, and I'm writing this about the person who wrote it, but this world needs more officers like John Alford. I'd just had a minor medical procedure, and was hell-bent on getting home, so I made a BS turn, and wouldn't you know it: Even though I was "certain" that I had renewed my registration, and simply lost the decal, my registration had actually expired. Officer Alford pulled me for the turn, and found out about the expired registration. I told him that just ten minutes before, I was having a device removed from my spine, and he believed me (thank goodness, because it was true). However, I'd been driving with an expired registration for awhile now, and he (justifiably) wrote me a citation for it. Please note: I'm going to pay the ticket, and not go to court, so this isn't some lame effort to get out of a traffic citation. Apr 17, 2012 - "McLean Police Officer Honored for Outstanding Service" by Regina Garcia Cano on patch.com --- I've been pulled over numerous times in my life, and I knew that Officer Alford was a good person, and a good officer, from the way he handled this. He showed compassion by understanding that I had just left the physician's office, but common sense in writing a citation for the expired registration, which had happened several months ago. But commending Officer Alford isn't the reason I'm writing this - I looked him up on the internet when I got home, and discovered that he is an amazing man: He runs a 501(c)(3) charity for fallen police officers, and it's one that deserves your support. --- Jan 3, 2013 - "John Alford Honors Virginia's Fallen Officers, Firefighters" by Whitney Wild on wjla.com Mar 1, 2015 - "Arena Racing Police Officer Honors Fallen Heroes" on vivatysons.com --- "About John Alford" on 911racing.com <--- This is the charity's website. @91-1Racing on Twitter --- Don Rockwell
  3. "Elegy for a Pig" on Hulu, a 25-minute long Adam-12 episode Below are links to the 347 line-of-duty deaths for officers stationed in DC and surrounding jurisdictions. Included are MD and VA state enforcement (which may include fatalities outside the area), and excluded are the vast majority of federal enforcement agencies (which may exclude fatalities inside the area). I urge people to watch "Elegy for a Pig" (if you cannot afford the subscription, write me) then take some time to think about all 347 men and women from our hometown, every single one having suffered the same fate as Officer Tom Porter. Although Adam-12 is fictional, my best friend was a fallen officer - he won't be listed here, because suicides aren't included, but those few of us left know that Evan's death was "in the line of duty." I was the best man in his wedding, and a couple years later, I was the only non-Jewish pallbearer at his funeral. I rode along with him on patrol many times, including one fateful evening when Patrolman Ryan Johnson was shot, lying there bleeding to death before my very eyes, and leaving behind a wife and child when he died from his gunshot wounds. This post is dedicated to Sergeant Evan Michael Rogers, Prince Georges Country Police Department, End of Watch: Jan 18, 1993. Evan's kid sister, Karen (or, "Tuffy," as he called her), runs the Facebook page, "Survivors of Suicide." Karen just this minute wrote me to say that Evan's dad said to say hello - when I saw the face of Mr. Rogers - now in his 80s - when he threw a handful of dirt on Evan's coffin, it was the first time I ever saw the end of the world. Supposedly, Evan wrote something to me in his suicide note; I never read it.
