I recommend the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition now up through Feb 23, 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery. Some beautiful work...and it's right next to the America's Presidents Gallery...because those post-Civil War presidents had great facial hair. Added bonus: The National Portrait Gallery is open until 7pm daily, is a stones throw away from Proof, Zaytinya, Jaleo, Rasika, and Poste (just to name 5 places to go eat afterwards), and Metro convenient. Really it's a no-brainer.

I just watched this episode of the Dick van Dyke show, probably for the first time in thirty years. In it, Rob Petrie mentions Mathew Brady, and I'm saying to myself, 'Who in the heck is Mathew Brady?!' Well, Mathew Brady is perhaps the photographer whose work you've seen more than any other in your entire life! Every time you pull out a penny, or a five-dollar bill, you're looking at a Mathew Brady. Who knew?

Good review of the Cézanne Portraits exhibit at the National Gallery of Art. They Suffered for Their Cézanne Portraits, by Holland Cotter, June 20, 2018, on nytimes.com. I went a couple of weeks ago and can confirm that it is all that and more. Put down that phone you are always staring at and head on over before it closes on July 8, 2018.
