A blast from D.C.'s restaurant past is holding court at a Maryland deli pssst: the food at Brooklyn's a mile north is better.

I know relatively little about Dwayne Haskins - I didn't realize he went to Bullis High School in Potomac, and had originally committed to Maryland: May 15, 2015 - "Dwayne Haskins Commits to Maryland, Targets Recruits To Join 'The Movement'" by Tyler Donohue on bleacherreport.com Oct 11, 2015 - "How Will Randy Edsall's Firing Impact Haskins and the Rest of Maryland's 2016 Recruiting Class?" by Brandon Parker on washingtonpost.com Jan 18, 2016 - "4-Star Maryland QB Dwayne Haskins Decommits, Flips Pledge" by Daniel Martin on nbcsports.com Bullis is no Churchill when it comes to athletics, but how does a four-star high-school quarterback throw 54-88 for 793 yards and 9 touchdowns in the first two games of his senior year ... and start the season 0-2?

On a nice day get carryout from River Falls Market - as expensive as anything else in Potomac but mostly worth it.

Sugo, River Falls Tavern and Wild Tomato are all good recent additions.

Glenstone has announced their next exhibit featuring Louise Bourgeois. This exhibit will be held in their original gallery space and will be the last show before the new Pavilions galleries open. Most DC-ites will be familiar with her giant "Spider" sculpture at the National Gallery of Arts Sculpture Garden on the Mall. "The trailblazing work of French-born American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) will be the subject of a five-decade survey exhibition featuring more than 30 works, all from Glenstone’s collection, including a recently acquired masterpiece that was realized at a pivotal moment in her career: the 1974 installation The Destruction of the Father." A joint venture between Cava and Mama Lucias in Park Potomac. Was at a preview party tonight.... 800 degree oven, good pizza's.- not quite orso or pupatello...but much better thah matchbox. And no corporate board driving the food. Had some spicy pork sliders, among other tastes. Should do great and a welcome addition to the wasteland of food in Potomac!

Was up in Rockville this week and someone took me to this sushi place on Frederick Road. It was surprisingly good! IMO, most sushi spots in strip malls (or not in strip malls, for that matter) anywhere are pretty bad, especially when it comes to raw fish. You really have to have a quality recc from a trusted source (or be a dr.com member ) to ferret out the few jewels. Ah, and for those japanese food purists on the board, I'm a pretty avid fan who thinks that Makoto is the best in our area (solely so you can benchmark this recc). This may be one. We just had lunch so I can't speak to the fuller menu of omikase and more exotic items but our boxes included a nice portion of very fresh maguro, white fish and salmon sashimi with an equally tasty and freshly made california roll, salad, miso, suprisingly light, crispy and clearly made-to-order tempura shrimp, sweet potato and rice, all for $11.50. Service was friendly. Kind of reminds me of what I think I remember Tachibana in McLean used to be like. Or maybe what Sushi-ko was like ten years ago. Kind of like Sakana in Dupont or even Kotobuki on MacArthur (both spots we visit semi-regularly) but better quality fish. Maybe doesn't merit a long drive but surely a good bet if up that way or in that area. Nice discovery, excellent value and, I didn't see a thread so here it is.

Didn't give this place a second thought when it opened, thinking "another strip mall sushi place" However, today's review by Eve Zibart in the Post makes it sound like a place definitely worth checking out.

I've been meaning to post about Jessie Mann Porcelains (also known as Boxes By Jessie) for over a year. Some dear friends had a child on Dec 1, 2013 , and I didn't have a clue what to get them. So I hunted and pecked, looked around at Etsy, and then Google, and I searched and searched, and then a few minutes later, I found the perfect keepsake: a hand-painted Limoges porcelain box, custom-made for their baby. I went over to Jessie's studio and met with her personally, and there was a whole variety of Limoges boxes to choose from - plain, ivory-colored boxes in their native, unpainted state. But she had catalogs of her work, so I could see where this was going to go - her finished products are *beautiful*. Look at these, and these, and these. She not only paints them, but applies the French enamels in multiple layers, firing the box in an oven after each layer. The entire process takes about a week, and it's well-worth your time (no, I'll say it's imperative) that you go over there, in person, to select your box. Jessie sat down with me for about thirty minutes, sketching out what I wanted right in front of me, so I had a pretty good idea of what the finished product would be like - but when I actually saw it, I couldn't believe how vibrant it was. These are gifts for people who have everything, and you don't know what to buy them. Obviously, they're not cheap (they start at $100 and go up - you can expect to spend $200-300 for even a modestly sized box). But man, are they worth it. And then when your box is ready, she doesn't just hand it to you and say bye; she includes photos, and presents it in a really nice gift bag. If you have a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or other special occasion (she even has one that says "First Tooth"), I can't imagine there's anyone who wouldn't appreciate receiving one of these as a gift. I cannot recommend Jessie Mann highly enough - she was a pleasure to work with, and the quality of her artistry is amazing. Don Rockwell

Hi, I'm Michael, a DR.com supporter and friend and owner of Quench, in Rockville MD. In April 2013 we were named favorite new restaurant by the Restaurant Association of MD, and now we're more actively branching out into catering and events. We've hosted class reunions, weddings a bat mitzvah and numerous parties and corporate events ranging from 20 - 120 people at our restaurant. We also work off-site, providing catering services for The Glenstone Museum, Mercedes Benz, Medimmune and countless others. Again, size of event is not an issue, as we've done everything from a 10 person private dinner to 900 people at Euro Motorcars Bethesda. We'd love to work with the Don Rockwell community, so email Michael@quenchnation.com if interested, and if you mention that you found us here, we'll give you 10% off your group or catering event. Thanks!

I happen to enjoy Americanized Chinese fare for what it is, that shiny and not too sophisticated assemblage of dishes that are exotic enough for the typical American palate and alien to the typical Chinese palate. Bring on those red sauces and chow mein and General Tso. I have had many satisfying meals at Wu's Garden in Vienna and House of Dynasty near Kingstowne, and I will have many more. This is comfort food to me. And so it is with Jade Billows in Potomac. Here is another pink-walled bastion of won ton soup and generous stir-frys, and I really enjoyed it. Our table of four split an appetizer of minced chicken in lettuce cups -- I can't tell if they copied the PF Chang's version or vice-versa -- and nicely fried chicken wings (middle sections only). Both were pleasant but unspectacular, and certainly didn't get in the way of the the conversation flowing around the table. For mains, two of us each had the Jade Billows Shrimp and two of us each had the Steak Hunan Style. I'll go out on a limb here and say that both dishes were executed well, and that you an certainly get far worse steak and shrimp dishes in the DC metropolitan area. I really enjoyed the Hunan Steak -- big slices of tender, medium rare beef tenderloin, nicely cooked chunks of onion, red pepper, mushrooms, baby corn and water chestnuts, and a brown sauce that was no better nor worse than any brown sauce in any Americanized Chinese restaurant around. Overall, a pleasant and satisfying dish. I don't even care that I ate it with a fork and knife. The shrimp dish came out in an aluminum foil pouch, and was loaded with perfectly cooked large shrimp with vegetables in an otherwise forgetful white sauce. I don't know where the name "Jade Billows" comes from, but I've had worse food for far higher prices in Potomac. Don't get me wrong, this isn't haute cuisine by any means. But I have to admit that I really enjoyed the meal.
