  1. This is *easily* a significant enough story where it needs to be discussed here. I don't know as much about it as I should, but I hope to learn from the discussion here. Dec 7, 2016 - "India's Central Bank Says That Cash Crisis Is Hurting the Economy" by Rishi Iyengar on money.cnn.com I have no doubt that there is massive tax fraud in India's largely cash-based economy, and that this move may even help in the long-term, but one might think there could've been more notice. Does anyone know why this came into being so suddenly? Nov 25, 2016 - "Can India Really Become a Cashless Society?" by Sameer Hashmi on bbc.com
  2. I've thought this about Russia for a long, long time now, and I'm beginning to think the same thing about Canada: I think that, at some point, it's going to become a major world power - not a military power, but an economic power. Any large, sparsely populated country with tremendous natural resources has the potential to do so, and after Russia, Canada might be #2 in this regard. One might also think that, with the potential decline in a carbon-based economy, natural resources may become less important than technology, but in the long term, I'm not so sure about that - plus, technology can be copied. Call me a conservative (in the true meaning of the word), but I like the potential for Canada - it is perhaps the country I most admire; if only it wasn't so darned cold.
  3. In some of the most stunning news you will read in your lifetime, the United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union, and Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned. Start with this article: "The UK's EU Referendum: All You Need To Know" by Brian Wheeler and Alex Hunt on bbc.com And then continue with these: "David Cameron Resigns After Votes to Leave European Union" on theguardian.com "What Happens Now the UK has Voted Brexit - and What is Article 50?" by Matthew Holehouse on telegraph.co.uk "'Explosive Shock' as Britain Votes to Leave EU, Cameron Quits" by Guy Faulconbridge and Kate Holton on reuters.com Do not underestimate the importance of Scotland and Northern Ireland voting against the majority (England and Wales). --- For some recent "historical" perspective, here's a thread from May 21, 2016: "Brexit - The UK's Potential Withdrawal From the European Union"
