  1. I popped into Martin's Tavern last Sunday for a late brunch before attacking Georgetown Mall. The bartender was pleasant and quick. She made a first class Bloody Mary including celery stalk and sasoned salt on the rim. Crab stuffed mushrooms were average. The showstopper: Fried Oysters Benedict. WOW. My 2 favorite things on the same plate, eggs and fried oysters with hollandaise. This dish was out of this world. The oysters were the real thing, not nasty frozen things. English muffin and hash browns completed the dish. It's not crazy to rave about simple food like this. I'm heading back soon.
  2. Prince of Petworth sleuthed out this sign a couple months ago, wondering what was to become of it. Yesterday, I ran into Bill Thomas (the owner of Bourbon) at Bourbon, and he informed me that Jack Rose will be opening up next Spring at 2007 18th St. NW (May 1st is currently the target date). This is around the intersection with Florida Ave., and is the former home of Third Power Fitness. This a large space, 6,300 square feet, and the restaurant will feature, needless to say, plenty to drink, with a strong focus on Scotch. Construction delays will be mitigated by the fact that they own the entire building. Congratulations in advance, Bill! Cheers, Rocks.
  3. "Garces Leases Old Original Bookbinders" by Michael Klein of philly.com. A big story on several levels, this has also been reported on by Jason Sheehan at phillymag.com. Super-heady stuff, if you're in the tourism or PR industry; I wish I could get excited about it. Actually, I just did! I'd neglected to include Old Original Bookbinder's on the Oldest Restaurants in Philadelphia list (since it was open when this website was founded on April 15, 2005, it gets included despite it having closed in 2009).
  4. This is the 6 year old reincarnation of what used to be the Last Chance Saloon, in the Oakland Mills Shopping Center on the east side of old school Columbia. It is a neighborhood pub. It is homey. Food is acceptable, but not creative. Food can be hit or miss though. Service is ok. Fairly inexpensive. Usually have 10 to 12 beers on tap. A rotating selection of maybe 50 to 100 bottled beers is good. It's cheaper than Victoria Gastro Pub. It serves booze as well, possibly unlike Frisco Taphouse. It has ample parking, unlike those two other places. Is it someplace I would seek out to dine? No. But if I want a burger, or fish & chips or a fairly decent pile of onion rings and get some good beer to catch up with friends as a sort of midpoint between Laurel and Baltimore? Sure.
  5. I'm not so sure McFadden's qualifies as a dive bar, but since I only go there when I'm dressed in a softball uniform after playing on the Mall it seems to fit. At least once a week during softball season I find myself at McFadden's with the team for a post game pitcher and some grub. McFadden's actually surprised me at the beginning of the season. They have a mighty tasty grilled chicken sandwich that they'll happily sub out the melted cheese for fresh sliced avocado...throw on a couple pieces of bacon and some mayo and I'm one happy catcher! Last night was a big juicy 10 oz burger with mustard & mayo, lettuce & ripe tomatoes, decent pickle slice and a huge mound of tater tots. I paired this heart attack with a 2007 Bud Light in plastic solo cup and happily spent the remainder of the evening watching the Yankees-Red Sox game on the big screen. Nothing sophisticated, but a satisfying way to spend a Monday night with friends!
  6. This article in Washington Business Journal appears to be correct - my deep, deep inside source tells me P.J. Clarke's will be opening in the old Olives space, and that it's a "done deal." Signed, dotted. Confidence level: Medium-High to High (an extremely trusted source, but I had to rush off the phone, and didn't really have time to discuss specifics). As for the food in New York? I've only been to the one on the Hudson, but my impression is that Old Ebbitt Grill has itself some competition. Cheers, Rocks.
  7. FWIW, we went for a late night drink to Mr. Smith's last night and found out that they are closing due to the landlord raising the rent from $8K/month to $33K/month. The Georgetown location will remain open; however, tonight is the last night that the Tyson's location will be open.
  8. Website 240-439-4010 7810 Wormans Mill Rd. Frederick, MD 21701 This is a nice bar and grill up in northern Frederick, right across from the Wegmans. The food here is what I would categorize as 'above average but not worth going much out of your way for', but the beer selection here is one of the better ones in town. Most notably, the beer selection is constantly rotating. Usually there will be one or two craft brewers from the area taking up 4-6 taps each, as well as a decent staple selection. Troegs, Dogfish, Duclaw, Flying Dog, Victory, and Heavy Seas are all locals that frequently appear here. It's good to keep your ears open because they occasionally will do full tap takeovers, and sometimes have special deals or pairings or freebies. They had a Duclaw takeover once where a $5 12oz pour let you keep the glass, which was nice. They also have a Nitro tap, of which Old Rasputin is frequently on board, please make sure to get this if you go here and see it. They also have a Randal, which rotates in and out. Finally, they have some decent bottles and cans to choose from, including Ten Fidy, V12, Blasphemy, and I've even seen Avery's Mephistopheles here for a disturbingly low price before (about $6 for a 12oz bottle). In general, the prices here are Pretty Good for beer. Food wise, definitely do not pass up on the Goat Cheese Brulee Dip, this stuff is just all kinds of amazing. I have not had anything else here I thought was exceptionally good, but nothing has been bad either. I usually go for a chicken sandwich or the Jambalaya myself, my wife always gets the steak with blue cheese. Also peanut butter pie. I just can't help myself.
  9. Speaking of the Cowboy Cafe, it is now under new management. They are trying to upgrade the facility as well as the kitchen. This is a process I am told will take them through the first few months of next year. I sampled a crab cake apetizer with chipotle aioli and the cajun shrimp with a spicy cajun butter sauce over long grain rice, both of which were pretty tasty. They seem to be trying out new items each week. I wish them luck. I always like to support my corner bar, or in this case, my "in the middle of a long haphazardly developed block" bar.
