I'd always planned on giving Marrisa Mowry her privacy, but she's now mentioned on several websites on the internet. As the next-best thing, I'm instead going to focus on her athletic career at Anderson University in Anderson, SC. I first saw Marissa on Instagram two years ago as a junior at Cartersville HS - she and Trevor Lawrence were about the cutest couple I'd ever seen, and I figured it was only a matter of time until the internet found them, and their all-American, high-school sweetheart relationship. But this is about Marissa, not Trevor, and she's a fine athlete - she didn't get too many minutes as a freshman, but she played well in high school, and Anderson can look for her to continue controlling the midfield in the near future. Best of luck to you, Ms. Mowry, and kindest regards from all of us up here in Washington, DC. -

No, you don't have to pick one, but I'd love to read some opinions from experts on the pros and cons of these titans vis-a-vis each other. Maybe I should have titled this post "Ronaldo and Messi" because we're lucky to be witnessing both. Messi reminds me of Maradona - I don't even want to get into that comparison. Who else can run faster dribbling than in a straight-out sprint? And if this conversation turns to GOAT, go ahead and throw him in. Yes, you know who. I would love some substantive discussion instead of just a name followed by an explanation point.

Never too early to start discussing the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia! So far three teams have qualified (as of 8/30/2017): Host Russia, Brazil and Iran, leaving 29 spots up for grabs. This international break marks two crucial qualifiers for the United States, with games against Costa Rica (Home Friday, Sept. 1) and Honduras (Away Tuesday, Sept. 5). Two wins and the US will be well on its way to Russia, anything else and they will be looking for points in October, against Panama and Trinidad & Tobago. Five years ago was the last time. Sure, it was a friendly, but both teams played full strength. And we tied them 1-1. -
The long soccer seasons started again and will generally run until May of next year. Each national league features 20 teams in their top league, and they will each play every other team twice, so the season is 38 games. UEFA Champions League and Europa League are international tournaments for top finishers of the prior season, i.e., top finishers of the 2015-2016 national league season play in the 2016-2017 international tournaments. What's weird is that during the summer players can be "transferred" so that the team that won the English Premier League (Leicester City) may have different players than the team that will play in the Champions League. Leicester City notably lost its star mid-fielder Ngolo Kante (who went to Chelsea). Who else is watching soccer?

Okay, I want to learn about soccer, from the ground up. I know a *little* bit, but barely a little - I'm not even sure I can name all the positions. Does anyone have any websites or reference material that will take me from ... assume zero just to be safe ... to something of a mastery, in an easy progression? I'm a very, very quick study, but I'd like to know some fundamentals before I get into this thread. I'm also more interested in a world view than a national view (although I would like to know how the U.S. is progressing at some point, too). Can anyone list a few websites, from absolute beginner, to intermediate, to advanced? Not tutorials per se, but after I know the rules, for example, an intermediate video might compare and contrast the skills of Pele and Maradona, and maybe one day I'll understand why Messi is considered better than they were (although I've heard people say Maradona was the bomb-diggity).. Thanks if you can point me in the right direction. I would also appreciate something similar for hockey (lovehockey?), which can go in its own "Hockey for Dummies" thread - in case anyone thinks I'm cocky, let these be two direct contradictions to that thought: I am as ignorant as any sports fan can possibly be about these two sports - I've even been to several Caps games and loved them; I just don't know *why*.

Screw it, I'll do it: May 2, 2016 - "Explaining the Leicester City Story to Americans" by Tom Geoghegan on bbc.com The odds against Leicester City (pronounced Lester City) being champions of the English Premier League in the summer of 2015 (before the 2015-2016 season began) were 5000-1, so if you had bet $200, you would have walked away with $1 million, assuming the betting company didn't go bankrupt. A lot of people are saying that this is the most significant upset in the history of team sports, globally - I've read this in numerous places, and not just by Englishmen. Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated makes the analogy that a comparable thing in American sports would be if an AA minor-league baseball team (keep in mind, AA is a step down from AAA in the minor leagues - the Bowie Baysox are a AA team), made their way - magically - to the major leagues, played a 162-game season, then won all their playoffs, and then won the World Series. --- As an interesting side note, American sports leagues - with their salary caps, and drafts favoring losing teams - are Socialist in nature, whereas the English Premier League - with no such bottom-loaded favoritism - is 100% Laissez-Faire Capitalism. That's not a political statement; it's a simple fact.

That's the beauty of the Bald Goalkeeper...just insert the next one into the lineup. The talent is coming. You need to remember that MLS is only 20 years old. Players that are only just now entering the pro-ranks will be the first generation of player that has had a domestic pro-league during their entire lifetime. And let's face it, MLS wasn't that great in its early years. In the next 5-10 years, I think you'll see an uptick in the level of play in the U.S. player (yeah, yeah, I know that's been promised before), as kids come up through the system who have been able to attend domestic games on a regular basis, train with pro-teams, go through pro-academies. That's a big difference over pre-MLS, when basically you grew up playing for your school, a travel team, and attended soccer camp during the summer.

The Euro 2016 hasn't been all that exciting. In the group stage, teams seemed more focused on defense, as some of the third place teams will make it to the knock-out stage. And there are more shoddy teams this year so the groupings aren't particularly exciting. I'm all for Iceland (and other teams) making the Euro for the first time but they simply don't have much talent. And has any country ever had a significant portion of their population travel to a foreign sporting event (I think entire Iceland has 300,000, and it seems like most of them are in France for Euro 2016). What about all the flares thrown on the pitch and the clash of fans?

Group stage first round starts tomorrow. Here's a game for soccer fans. Pick one team in each round. If your chosen team wins or ties, you survive to pick in the next round. I don't care if you pick the same team all the time. We'll see who lasts the longest. I'll take Real Madrid over Shakhtar. List of matches. To make things a little more varied, if you don't pick Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or PSG, you automatically get one goal. For example, let's say you pick Man City, and the actual score was Man City 1, Juventus 2, then you get a tie because of the one added goal. If anyone has access to odds on the matches, feel free to post them.

For those of you who might care, Ireland's Four Courts had a fire in their kitchen. Latest update via Twitter from ARLnow.com is that the upstairs kitchen will be closed for at least a month, and the lunch service during the week is closed - they're open 2 PM - 2 AM weekdays, 10 AM - 2 AM weekends. Hopefully my mug is okay! -
