  1. One of my faves in the city is Piccolo Angolo at the corner of Hudson and Jane. Reservations are a must, and even then it might be a little bit before they can squeeze you in. Sometimes service can be brusque. The tasty house vino comes in a bottle with a "Grolsch top." Not that there's anything wrong with that. Nevertheless, it's really great food at a really decent price. And you never know who you might meet! Black Sheep got to wait on line for the rest room with Mike Piazza. Good thing she's a Mets fan!
  2. Since there was no thread for this restaurant on its own - there is now. Apparently the 2nd venture for the Lahlou Restaurant Group, their 1st being Lupo Verde Cucina & Bar. Stopped in late afternoon looking for some decent Italian food - the group of people (management) graciously greeted us and welcomed us to their establishment. We had viewed the menu posted outside and wanted to see if they could accommodate Ghocchi for our kids who wanted tomato-based sauce instead of (GNOCCHI 22,ASPARAGUS, WILD MUSHROOMS, FONDUTA, SPRING PEAS, GELATO AL PARMIGIANO), which in unison, they replied "absolutely, we can make anything the way you want it." It did not disappoint and the Gnocchi was outstanding. We also had a PACCHERI 28 BLUE CRAB, SHRIMP, SQUID, GARLIC, SAFFRON BRODETTO which was excellent and flavorful. The fresh-baked bread that accompanied our meal helped me make sure my plate was clean enough to place back on the shelf without washing 😁. We also ordered the tomato and fresh mozzarella pizza to round out the meal. Staff was accommodating and sincerely friendly. This place is tucked away off the main part of the Wharf on a secondary street but easy to find. The food came out promptly and we felt like they appreciated our visit. If in the area and interested in a moderately-priced, fresh Italian meal, give it a shot.
  3. Pretty much says it all...looking for a really good classic NYC Italian joint...veal parm, clams oreganato, stuff like that. Any suggestions? --- Trattoria Trecolori (JLK) Becco (Rieux)
  4. Didn't want to head down to the Village, so stuck with Da Tommaso. Very happy with it...baked clams, veal parm, linguini with white clam sauce...all exactly what I was looking for. Short walk to the theater, so that worked out well too. I'll have to try Piccolo Angolo when I have a bit more time in the city to compare.

Let me qualify this review in three ways: I'm not a local, but visit DC at least annually; my family and I enjoy A.V's almost as much as a family tradition than a culinary experience; and I don't know a lot about high-end Italian dining, which A.V.'s is certainly not, and doesn't really try to be. Ok, caveats aside... Had dinner there last night. They just reopened after their annual August vacation. The biggest change I noticed since my last visit in December is that they reprinted and relaminated the menus. The typewritten, I don't think it was even printed off a computer, specials list was on the top of the right side, with the same specials as last visit, and as last year, and as long as I can remember. Ah, the ambiance. Not enough light, tables too close together, semi-friendly waiters. And the music. 45rpm's of classic opera, Maria Calas, etc. Played on a ancient jukebox giving 2 plays for a quarter, complete with an uneven speed controller that gave the singers a vibrato they never had, or wanted. Being summer, the imported fireplace was not lit nor seeping smoke into the dining room. Ah, the wine. While many of the 5 or 6 selections on the wine list are under $19, we chose a liter of the house red for $14. Two short straight glasses came along. No fine crystal here. Ordered with, as tradition requires, a white pizza with fontina cheese, which came with uneven cheese, but a perfectly crispy thin crust and scent of a bunch of garlic. Thankfully we didn't quite finish it. Because it was a great dipping tool for the pork spezzatino. Large chunks of very tender and flavorful pork in a light tomato broth with peppers, onions and mushrooms. Perhaps a pork shoulder, it reminded me of the mexican carnitas, in an italian treatment. With a nice helping of spaghetti and meat sauce on the side. Under $10. Was stuffed, so only a cappacino for dessert. This place is unique, but certainly has probably had mixed reviews over the years. Hopefully the rumors of the sale of the building are false. Not that I'd neccessarily miss the food, although I've never had a bad meal there, but it would be a bummer to have to find a suitable replacement, with all of it's qualities, to continue the family tradition that's at least ten years old...
  6. It's hard to believe I'm beginning a thread for a restaurant that closed over four years ago, but Mike's in Mount Vernon was opened when this website was founded (Apr 15, 2005), so it gets a spot on the "Oldest Restaurants in the Washington, DC Area" thread as it opened in 1927.
  7. That place is such a treat! Going to high school in Kings Contrivance, I probably ate there 4 out of the 5 weekdays for lunch! ABSOLUTELY the best Italian coldcut I've ever had! High quality meats and they heat the roll in the oven before they construct the masterpiece.
  8. Francoluigi's High Note Cafe, on Tasker St. just a block south of Victor's, has a more relaxed, less tourist-driven atmosphere with live music and opera-singing waiters as well. The food is better with bigger portions and you can eat without pressure from the staff to turn the tables over. The singing is accompanied by live musicians at the High Note, unlike Victor's where the waiters sing to piped in music through the speaker system. There's a pizzeria counter when you first walk in the door. Make sure to head into the separate back dining room if you want the music and dining.
  9. Another good option for the Montgomery County crowd that I take the girls to is up off of Shady Grove Road just behind the Home Depot shopping center. Zio's - On Gaither Road. They have very good tasting pizza. It is not New York style and for me to endorse pizza that is not NY style says a lot. The flavor of the dough is very tasty. I was there the other night and enjoyed some pasta with red sauces. The crostini was also good. Seems to be a nice family owned place that you can always get a table at. We went there a few weeks ago after we could not get a table at a steak chain down the street. We got a table immediately.
