  1. Prince of Petworth on the receiving end of another game of telephone regarding rumors on Joe's Stone Crab coming to DC. (The typo in the title of that post and the subsequent comments are comedy gold). If true this is pretty awesome. We've resorted to next day FedEx of a few dozen claws when we get the hankering when stone crabs are in season. With shipping it ends up being about what you would pay at retail, but any time I've found them in this market they have been less than fresh. If there was a place I could plop down at the bar and get a half dozen or do when the urge hits ... sweet.
  2. On Friday, doughboy and I went to the new St. Anselm, a Stephen Starr joint located at Union Market. Our server was friendly, and quite good at ass kissing. We had him as a server before, but we can't remember where. We started with beef tartare and blue crab deviled eggs. The tartare was mixed with lots of herbs and seasoning, thus obscuring the taste of the beef itself. The deviled eggs was good, adding crab made it different, but not better nor worse. The best part of dinner were the grilled oysters (with smoked herb butter) and grilled clams, with a chartreuse sauce. The oysters were the best since my first visit to The Ordinary in Charleston. The clams were also excellent. Unfortunately, the monster prawn was overcooked. The Butcher's Steak of the day was a hanger steak. It was cooked to medium rare as requested, and very good. At $28, it might be not a bargain (or maybe it is, I don't order steak very often). We also had the grilled salmon collar. It was nicely grilled - a treat if you like simply grilled salmon. I would go back just for the oyster, clam and maybe steak.
  3. https://www.oaksteakhouserestaurant.com/alexandria-menus/ Hubby and I went to Oak Steakhouse the other night. Surprisingly it was our first time there. We thought about getting fancy steak, but Hubby felt like steak frites, and there was a halibut with curry sauce that sounded great. So we went off script. Glasses of wine, as we didn't really want to go all out. But we were celebrating a good day of work for me with a nice dinner. Hubby's steak frites was likely 6 oz steak and a huge pile of fries. The fries were good, I stole many. The steak had good flavor, I just had a bite. I am interested in getting a good steak next time around, looked good. BUT... my halibut was great. It was crispy on the outside but tender and flaky inside. It was served with forbidden rice, red curry sauce, green papaya and nam prik. It was really delicious. Honestly, it will be hard not to order it again. Hubby thought it was spicy, I didn't really think it was spicy, but the rice was cooked well, I dipped lots of fries in the curry sauce too. I loved it. We also were given a side of brussels with apple cider soy caramel sauce with crispy shallots, and man they were great. REALLY sauced and carmelized, but I liked them a lot. Hubby also was a huge fan. I am sure these are not low calorie Brussel sprouts, but man, delicious umami, sweet with a hint of salty. Loved them! Anyway, not cheap, but very good, and very nice service. Halibut was def worth it.
  4. Happy Hour at McCormick & Schmick's with the library crew turned out to be pretty good. Drinks are regular price (Most draft beer $5) but if you buy two, you unlock the $1.95 happy hour menu of apps and entrees. Most in the group got the cheeseburger, which looked pretty much like the entree cheeseburger and fries. There was also crab dip, artichoke dip, mussels...stuff like that. Looked like a pretty good deal. Weird hours, though: 3:30-6:30, then again 10:30-12:00.
  5. My husband and I have a babysitter booked for tomorrow night, and we haven't figured out what we're doing yet. I kept hoping I'd have some epiphany about where we should go, but that hasn't happened yet. Of course I love to eat out, so that's always a good fallback, but my husband isn't nearly as into food as I am. He enjoys food but would be happy with a big ol' steak for most meals. I'm hoping someone can help me with a restaurant suggestion in case we can't think of anything else to do! Here are some parameters: Most cuisines should be OK with the exception of Ethiopian. (There may be others I'm forgetting.) We live in Silver Spring, so a reasonable drive from there would be ideal. (I'm thinking no Georgetown, Arlington, Alexandria, etc.) We'd like to spend under $200 with alcohol. We like to eat at the bar, so as long as we can get bar seating somewhere around 6:30 or 7pm, that's fine with us. My husband has recently become interested in cocktails (though he's not super adventurous), so a good cocktail program would be nice (but it doesn't have to super high end or creative). My husband isn't a fan of small plates and wouldn't do well with a tasting menu. Here are some non-steak-focused places we've enjoyed together (or at least my husband didn't hate :-)): Woodberry Kitchen Fork and Wrench Dino's Grotto Red Hen Central Trapezaria I think the reason I'm overthinking this a bit is that we recently had a date lunch at The Partisan, which I thought he'd like because it's so meat-centric, and he was annoyed when he ordered the doner dish and there was by his reckoning way too little meat on his plate. I guess he expected a huge pile of meat for the price. Anyway... If anyone knows of anything non-food-oriented to do tomorrow night that isn't already sold out, I'd be interested in knowing about that, too! Thanks in advance!
  6. Certainly if you are on an expense account, traveling a lot and are an unremitting carnivore this is the kind of news you MUST HAVE. Just saw an article about the steaks voted BEST in each state and DC. Its quite exciting. Bet you can't wait. The information comes from Business Insider which has a publication in most major cities if not all and the data comes from FourSquare. How many of you have a Foursquare App? How many use it? Did your votes count? How many know what foursquare is??? In any case here is the article and if you can't wait any longer here is who won Per state: Virginia Mikes American Grill, Springfield Maryland Woodmont Grill, Bethesda DC Bourbon Steak, Georgetown Do you agree? The article is being redistributed by other news sources. I found it in Patch.
