Is Makoto the only non-Benihana spot to enjoy teppanyaki style Japanese in DC/NoVa? I have a friend who's craving, and we're looking for options.

Had dinner last night at Samurai teppanyaki grill in the GMU shopping center. I had the chicken and shrimp combo, dining companion had the lobster-filet-shrimp, plus the typical miso soup, salad, fried rice, grilled veggies and noodles. It was clean, everything was cooked properly, not the best show by the chef but certainly adequate, and thankfully not oversalted (which is something that I find happens at a teppanyaki with chefs using the salt shakers in their show). A lot of food -- I took fully half of mine home even after eating until I was stuffed, so I think a fair value for the price, which I believe was about $24 for my choice, maybe about $31-$32 for my companion? Plus a sake appletini for me that balanced on the line between sweet and sour. I would have been happy with a tad more sour but was relieved that it wasn't too sweet. Not fine dining by any stretch, but I think a better choice than Kilroy's (which was the other option I was offered).

I tried the new-ish sushi and Japanese steakhouse in the old chili's spot on Rt 1 and cherry. Sushi was all fine to very good--better than maintenance sushi but not Sushi Sono. Place was basically empty. Pretty questionable starting the same concept that failed there before them, in a shopping center that is annoying to access. But I hope they survive.

What's the best hibachi between Dupont Circle and Ballston? Is it still Matsutake in Ballston proper?

Sometimes life is cruel. Root canal surgery that goes wrong. Infected dry socket. And sometimes you take a four hour Bolt Bus to New York City and have dinner at Benihana. Sometimes you have a girlfriend. And sometimes she has a friend that is turning 30. Sometimes this soon-to-be 30 year old has a weird thing for Benihana. And sometimes this soon-to-be 30 year old decides that turning 30 at Benihana would be...fun. And sometimes you just have to suck it up and be the good boyfriend. Was it bad...no not really. Was it good...no not really. The onion soup was watery with two strands of something that looked like onion. The salad was at least fresh and crisp. The shrimp appetizer was overcooked. At one point our chef put a pile of teppanyaki-ed onions on my plate for no apparently reason other than they were cooked and he needed room on the hibachi. The sushi rolls didn't completely suck. The spicy tofu was competent. And I would actually give them some kudos for their fried rice. It's a food factory, the place was packed, and I'm sure they made a lot of money Saturday night. I'll chalk it up as one of those life experiences...remember when we took the bus to New York City and had dinner at Benihana. Good times. Good times indeed.
