  1. I've always assumed that the "correct" stance about torture is, "Make it illegal under all circumstances, and if you do it, be prepared to pay the price if you're caught." Alan Dershowitz once said: Jan 22, 2002: "Want to Torture? Get a Warrant" by Alan M Dershowitz on sfgate.com In this editorial, Dershowitz advocates torture using clean needles shoved under people's fingernails to produce excruciating pain in a "ticking-time bomb scenario," which everyone dismissed as being nearly impossible. Well ... "NYC Bombing Suspect Nabbed, Charged in Shootout with Cops" by Andrew Wyrich, Tariq Zehwei, and John Bacon on usatoday.com This is pretty damned close to being a ticking-time bomb scenario. So, is Dershowitz right, or not? Should we be able to torture this man to extract information? Or do we treat him humanely? Do we make it absolutely illegal to torture people? If so, do we assign a scapegoat from the CIA to "break the law" by doing it illegally? Or do we come right out and say, "You won't be killed, but you're going to experience pain like you never thought was possible?" What if they we don't torture this man, and a bomb goes off in Times Square in two days, killing 200 people, all because we didn't have proper intelligence that we could have otherwise extracted? See how I used "they" in the preceding paragraph before I caught myself? It isn't they; it's "we." It's so easy to take a holier-than-thou stance regarding torture; it's a lot tougher when reality stares you in the face. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here, but the moral implications are tremendous.
  2. Many people (myself included) have, at some time, thought that the Muslim community needs to step up and denounce what's going on in the world. Here's a differing opinion - whether you agree with it or not, it's definitely thought-provoking and worth reading: "Stop Asking Me To Condemn Terrorists Just Because I'm Muslim" by Rana Elmir on washingtonpost.com The article starts out with a sub-title: "I have no reason to say sorry, and Islamophobes won't believe me anyway." While Ms. Elmir makes a lot of good points (truly good, salient points) in the essay, I believe she's losing the big picture - she's also co-mingling two separate things. I do not feel responsible in the least for slavery; yet, there is no denying that white people were largely responsible for the systematic, government-backed oppression of black people for centuries, and it has resulted in a disparity of wealth that continues to this very day. No, I don't personally "apologize" for slavery (I wasn't even born!), but I acknowledge that my forefathers were the ones that committed this crime against humanity, and I also acknowledge that I most likely have a disproportionate amount of wealth because of it - is it through hard work and smarts alone that I live in a decent little house in Arlington, while at the same time, a less-educated black man is living in a roach-infested apartment in a higher-crime neighborhood? Hell no - I had a head start. It is for this reason that I think the concept of "affirmative action" - while you may or may not agree with it - has merit, and should at least be discussed as a possibility, or at least a theory. Affirmative action can be as simple as going out of your way to hold a door open for someone of color; it doesn't mean you have to have job quotas - just do something *nice* for someone. It really can start with something as small as that. People like me (WASPs) have virtually *no* inroads to the Muslim community, and without a community-wide condemnation of terrorism by Muslims, we (the WASPs) feel pretty damned powerless to stop it. Of *course* we're not asking Ms. Elmir to "apologize" (this is where she co-mingles things - I would *never* expect such a thing); but the Islamic community - as a whole - needs to stand up and rally against extremism, just as white people - as a whole - needed to stand up against slavery 150 years ago. Don't you see the difference between that, and demanding that Ms. Elmir says "she's sorry?" If the Spanish Inquisition took place in today's day-and-age, it would be up to all Christians - as a community - to speak out against it. Nobody holds you responsible, Ms. Elmir. But you are part of a community that has some situational and positional power, and could greatly help the situation over time. I don't think Muslim-Americans should be under any obligation to take an activist role against terrorism *as individuals*, but speaking to the Muslim-American community, especially the religious community: We're asking for your help. We *need* your help. *You* need your help. I believe that you *are* our first line of defense against terrorism, and without your support, the fight is going to be one hell of a lot harder, and one hell of a lot longer.
  3. I refuse to use the term ISIL, and here's why: ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ISIL stands for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant So, what is Levant? Levant is defined as "the lands in the eastern Mediterranean, covering Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Iraq." I don't give these assholes that much credit. I think their "army" is in the hundreds. To my many Muslim friends in the restaurant industry: I embrace you now as much as I ever have. Hell, *I* could probably kill 130 people if I really set my mind to it. BIG FUCKING DEAL! You could also add up the individual IQs of ISIS members and still not get mine, so fuck you, ISIS. Kill me if you want; I don't give a shit. If you like this post, retweet this (which points back to this post).
  4. "At Least 100 Dead in Explosions, Shootings, and Hostage Situation in Paris" by Emily Shapiro on abcnews.go.com
  5. "Ashton Carter: U.S. to Begin 'Direct Action on the Ground' in Iraq, Syria" by Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube on nbcnews.com How do Russia and China sit back and do nothing while this terrorist group is destroying 2,000-year-old works of art, and assassinating civilians using barbaric methods? I'm no hawk and I'm certainly no expert, but this organization needs to be eliminated by any means necessary.
