  1. So how're things going for T'giving 2011? I'm going up to my SILs again, but they're going out of town, they're just letting us meet at their house (everyone lives up in Md, about 20 of us-I know my MIL wanted me to host, but I was ducking & weaving), Once again, I've only volunteered for dishes I want to eat, I'm smoking 2 12 lb turkeys (lots of vegetarians, & my MIL is bringing a ham)& everything I made last year-pickled shrimp, bean dip, spinach-Parmesan, & maybe, roasted cauliflower w/ pomegranate seeds & yogurt cheese. I totally dodged all the boring stuff like mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole. The commissary at Ft. Belvoir was a zoo this morning, & I'm sure it will only get worse (I forgot a couple of things, but there was no doubling back). How is your Thanksgiving prep going?
  2. Last year, due to varied and unrelated circumstances, we got our T-Day bird from DCity Smokehouse instead of my "celebrated" 3-day purchasing/brining/air-drying/cooking routine. It was f$%*ing delicious, and my wife has stated how less stressful the whole day was, including the full availability of our oven for other cooking duties. Needless to say it has been recommended we do it again. With the impending opening of their new storefront DCity has no idea if they will offer turkeys again this year (and with the departure of the pit master earlier this year I actually don't know if we'd go with them again). Who has had success with other pre-cooked turkeys in the DC area? Ideally we'd like to pick up Thursday morning. I have one recommendation for Wagshal's, and having worked across the street from the Greek Deli on 19th St I know they offer holiday meals. Any other suggestions?
  3. I prevailed upon our family gathering of seven adults on Thursday to let me take over not just the kitchen for Thanksgiving, but the menu as well. At first they were skeptical and worried about missing the same old meal, so we had an early lunch with all the usual items and then a late dinner, a tasting menu of sorts that had a strong Thanksgiving theme: Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Fried Sage and Nutmeg Creme Fraiche (adapted from Thomas Keller's Bouchon cookbook) Trio of Sweet Potato Raviolis in a Brown Butter and Thyme Sauce Mustard and Herb Crusted French Rack of Lamb with Cranberry and Polenta Stuffing, and pureed yukon potatoes with a shittake gravy Pumpkin Creme Brulee Apple, Pear and Quince Turnovers with Vanilla Custard For palate cleansers, I baked some pumpkin bread with cranberries and blueberries and teaspoons of raspberry sorbet. Overall, it was a success, but due to an unforseen potato shortage I had to use leftovers from lunch and that side turned out far from perfect, but the gravy made up a bit for that. I also had issues getting the tops just right on the brulees, but I couldn't exactly bring a blowtorch on the plane. Using freshly grated nutmeg and vanilla bean made all the difference, though -- I'm not much of a baker, but I will no longer shortcut on these two ingredients. The lamb I bought from Cheeseitique, and it was also a hit. We roasted a smaller turkey (around 13 lbs.) the day I arrived and used the meat for sandwiches throughout the week. We also made a pie every night, and this way we weren't bombarded with leftovers but were able to enjoy Thankisgiving favorites throughout the week.
  4. My family will be in town for Thanksgiving, and I would love to have a nice meal with them without worrying too much about the big bird... I heard DG and Corduroy were opened for the big meal last year - hopefully again this year?
  5. I should have posted this long before. Given the current political climate, I know there are people who are no longer comfortable at their family gatherings. Might people with extra space/food be interested in getting matched up with members with similar political and food leanings? Some of the most stress free holiday meals I've attended were potlucks with friends. We can probably squeeze 2 in for Thanksgiving, but since we're Jewish, we're happy to host for an alternative Xmas day dinner if people are interested. Ours is a non-smoking, meat-eating cat-free home, with extremely liberal politics. We don't care what your religion is as long as you're tolerant, love good food, and don't reek of perfume or patchouli (makes me sneeze like crazy). All normal food allergens are present. I have a crustacean allergy but people can bring food with them, just label it please. Standard poodles present, dog hair tumbleweeds are not. We will try really hard to work with your pronouns; our chowpup is transgender (and how'd he get to be 18 already?).
  6. Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends in Baltimore. Here's Baltimore Magazine's guide to area restaurants open on Thanksgiving day. Happy dining everyone!
  7. Is it too early to discuss good choices for restaurants open on Thanksgiving? I just called Corduroy, and they have a three-course prix fixe for $65. OpenTable has an extensive list of restaurants open here. In the past, I've had good Thanksgiving dinners out at Corduroy and Vidalia (in R.J. Cooper's time). I had a memorably bad meal a few years ago at the Oval Room, which was so dispiritingly awful and perfunctory that we skipped dessert and went to Adour for a proper meal (thankfully, there were seat available at the bar). Any thoughts, all?
  8. Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic Halloween weekend and are getting ready for the holiday season heading towards us. I wanted to let everyone know, on November 20th, I will be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner event held at Amoo's. This event will feature a collaboration of Southern American comfort food and authentic Persian cooking. Dinner will be served in a prix fixe format consisting of a three course meal for only $40!! Please book your tables now as many of you know, Amoo's dining room is very small and can only accomodate up to forty five guests. You can make reservations by calling the restaurant at 703-448-8500 or by simply shooting me an email at chefsebastian@amoosgrill.com Thank you and see you all on the 20th. Chef Seb
  9. Renting a car to drive to Thanksgiving festivities again this year. I am not leaving until tomorrow afternoon but am picking up the rental car today. My boyfriend and I are thinking that if the weather lets up and it stops raining (I'm a California girl so driving a rental car in inclement weather is not going to turn out well), we should venture out to Rockville or somewhere in the suburbs for Chinese food. We went to Sichuan Jin River last year, which lead to my first ever donrockwell.com post! We have narrowed our choices down to: China Bistro Bob's Noodle Bob's Shanghai Joe's Noodle House We are also open to other suggestions. Anyone out there with some advice? What I really want are dumplings and noodles. Thanks!
  10. Thanks to the football gods that the Lions are playing the Bears, cause the bears suck and we should get a win. That the Michigan Wolverines will get destroyed by the damn buckeyes and we will have another coach next year.......a few prayers for Jim Haurbaugh. That my cooks can finally get their stations set and ready to feed 200 of my closets friends....... Happy Turkey Day
