This is an odd one: A Potatom is a single plant that produces both potatoes and tomatoes. Vreugdenhil Young Plants (the corporate owner (?) of Pick-&-Joy) is based in The Netherlands. -
At least one vendor at the Dupont farmers' market is selling tomatoes already, presumably tunnel-grown or greenhouse grown or something. Although I appreciate that advances are made through experimentation, I wish they would stop. I picked up two Brandywines, not so much because I'm a sucker but because I had recently bought a bag of emmer bulgur and was craving tabbouleh. Engh. Seriously, why bother? These did have a flavor somewhat reminiscent of a summer tomato, but with the mealy texture of grocery store rocks grown in Florida that we all know and loathe. Not too bad in this application (the texture wasn't too obvious what with all the grain and parsley). But I wish growers would devote their resources to growing that which actually grows this time of year. Anticipation or immediate gratification? I'll take the former, thanks.

This is probably more appropriate in the farmers market forum, but I wanted to put it where people would see it since it's time sensitive. I have the usual problem of hosting my dinner club this Saturday and needing to find local produce by mid-week in order to prep in advance. Unfortunately I now also can't skip out of work early to hit Riverdale on Thursday like I normally would. Does anyone know of a market in DC or MD preferably on a Wednesday (could also consider Tuesday) that has an abundance and variety of produce? Specifically I am looking for plenty of corn, nectarines, tomatoes (heirloom, cherry, etc.) and watermelon. The corn seems to be the most problematic. -

There's also plenty more discussion about canned tomatoes, and also the flickering, teasing possibility of finding fresh San Marzanos.
