  1. I stumbled across a wonderful piece of Arlington County public art today at Oakland Park, near Virginia Square Metro. This is called "Ridge" by the local artist Foon Sham. You can walk through it, and it's impermeable to rain. It's even a Pokegym.
  2. Arlnow.com reports an off-shoot hot pot/shabu shabu in Virginia Square now, by the name of Mala Tang (as in ma2 la4=hot, spicy and tang4=to heat by water) to occupy the former Mei's Asian Bistro vacancy.
  3. Drove past Darna today, and then checked its website. While I haven't stepped inside yet, a few things caught my eye.... First, the stylized "D" logo is actually "Darna" in Arabic, with the letter "D" accentuated to appear as a fancy letter "D" in Arabic, and "arna" in Arabic script inside it. Clever and artistic. Second, the place is apparently laid out like a house, bedroom and all. I can't wait to see the inside to see how they pulled it off. Third, this isn't a Muslim Halal place -- liquor is on the menu, including three different brands of Arak, wine by the glass including Ksara (Lebanon), and cocktails like "Beirut" (vodka, Frangelico, lime juice and simple syrup). Fourth, but most important, there is kibbee nayee on the menu -- spelled "kibbiniya"...!! Having performed reconnaissance, I now intend to tuck in and check it out.
  4. I had an enjoyable lunch at Tara Temple yesterday. It replaced Tara Thai -- thankfully -- and is managed by the guy who formerly managed Cafe Asia in Rosslyn. More accurately, it is the remodeled Tara Thai, but I'm glad that Tara Thai is no longer dishing out so-so Thai food. This is a trendy black-and-steel place that looks like it should be in Manhattan or San Francisco, and it has mini tables with padded stools ringing what will soon be a combination bar area and dance floor if the notice on the door for a dance hall permit is approved. The throbbing techno music in the background adds to the trendiness, I suppose. The food is Asia fusion, and pretty darned good. The green tea came out in a coffee press and was thick and flavorful. We had quite a few of the sushi rolls and nigiri, all flawless and fresh. The salmon cheek yakitori was delicious, proof that we often toss away the best morsels of salmon in this country. I forget the style of fried rice we tried, but it was excellent and I would be tempted to get it as carry out whenever I'm in the neighborhood. All in all, this was a surprisingly good meal, albeit in a way too-trendy environment. I'll definitely be back for the food, but not the atmosphere.
  5. It's too soon to break this news, but unfortunately, ARLnow.com got ahold of public records, and is going to break the story if I don't. So, with the blessings of Tim Ma and Joey Hernandez ... Tim and Joey, the owners of Maple Ave. Restaurant in Vienna, will be opening Water & Wall at 3811 N. Fairfax Drive in Virginia Square (in the old Pines of Florence space). "Water and Wall" is the intersection of where Tim and Joey lived in New York City when Tim was attending the French Culinary Institute, and interning at Momofuku Ko. In Joey's words, "It was in that building that we started to draft our ideas of owning a restaurant. We created menus there, created dishes there, etc. So, essentially, it was where the dream was born." The style of cuisine, and values of the restaurant, will carry over from Maple Ave. Restaurant, but Water and Wall will have its own identity. There is no word at all on an opening date, although it may well be in 2013. Tim and I talked about some of his culinary visions awhile back, but things are just too nascent and dynamic to even discuss. So I'm sorry this news is out so soon, but I'm happy to say congratulations, both to Tim and Joey, and also to the residents of Virginia Square. Cheers, Rocks P.S., also in Joey's own words: "In terms of Maple Ave: Our sous chef Nyi Nyi Mint will take over tomorrow as Chef De Cuisine. Nyi Nyi will also help out with Water & Wall. Nyi Nyi was trained by David Thompson, chef and creator of Nahm in London. Nyi Nyi also spent time in London's Hakkasan before it was bought out by corporate. Tim will continue to be the Executive Chef for Maple Ave."
  6. Not sure if this is the right place (apologies if it is) but curious to see what everyone's three favorite restaurants are along this area? My 3 in no particular order 1. Pho 75 2. Cava Mezze (esp Brunch) 3. TNR, go to Fish in Szechuan Broth Honorable mention: El Pollo Rico, Green Pig Bistro
  7. I hadn't been to Costa Verde in several years (it was "that place" by Jiffy Lube), but always enjoyed my meals there; unfortunately, it has closed. Replacing it is Darna, a Middle Eastern restaurant and hookah lounge.
