  1. Hello Everyone, I would like to have a forum where someone could post an idea for a small format cooking class in their home. By cooking class- I mean someone has an idea of something they would like to learn how to make and are willing to do some trial and error with people to help in that process; or someone is good at something and wouldn't mind showing other people how to do it; or a combination of the two. I really learn better when I am interacting in a class and not just watching YouTube or etc, and making the item helps me build my confidence that I can do it on my own. I often find that many cooking classes are either (1) for couples (2) for kids (3) for people below my skill level or (4) a series in which I can't commit to the time and number of classes. I know there are people on this site that can make a lot of things I would like to learn to make. I am also willing to offer up my own skills if there is something I can make someone else would like to learn. For instance, I have never made homemade Bao Buns. It doesn't look incredibly hard, and I wouldn't mind doing it, but I feel like it would be more fun with a few people. I also would LOVE to learn how to make Saltenas, and feel that this is maybe a little above my skill level until I see, interact in doing it once or twice, but I likely need someone with more skill than me who has made it before. There are all sorts of things like this. And I have a decent size kitchen, and would be willing to host a few classes if people could make it to Alexandria, and would be willing to go somewhere else if someone else wanted to host. Anyway, I wanted to have a forum for this sort of thing, so here it is, if there are any like minded soles, speak up and we can figure out what we want to make and when.
  2. Would anyone be interested in meeting up at Xi'an Gourmet in Rockville to explore the menu? http://www.xiangourmetmd.com/menu.aspx I'd prefer a weekend because this is a bit of a drive for me in weeknight traffic, but could maybe do a weeknight if it were a bit on the later side. This coming weekend (March 9-10) is totally open for me, but after that I have a moderate preference for Sunday evenings.
  3. Please see the post here. If anyone wants to use the picnic as a springboard to prime this pump, please do.
  4. The location is set. True to his word, everyone take a moment to thank @DonRocks. The picnic is set for July 29 at Carderock Picnic Pavillion. I have not had the joy of attending any of the past picnics, but as the lead in this, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME being at this one. The only "price" of admission is that you are a registered member of the forum. WIN WIN, I say. I can only imagine the deliciousness everyone will be bringing to this event. I am actually looking forward to seeing some old friends, and walking away with new ones. C' 'mon we are a fun bunch, with gobs of insight on everything ranging from food, to the proper use of the oxford comma. In the meantime, I have a picnic to plan. Its gonna be epic. Your cruise director, kat
  5. You're still on top, Jeff. Would anyone like to congregate next Wednesday, Jul 19? Say 5 PM for an opening gambit? Let's try and get ten people here for this. Jeff, text me if you want to talk.
  6. There have been several short-term cancellations for organized events lately, and it is entirely my fault for not having come up with a policy. So here it is, effective 11 PM, July 27th, 2005: 1) For any organized event, you must cancel at least 72 hours (three days) prior to the event. Otherwise you need to pay 100% of the cost unless there's a waiting list and your seat(s) can be filled. 2) Anyone not doing 1) can't come to any more events. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but Hillvalley has been putting a great deal of time into organizing these events, and that time needs to be respected, as does the revenue that restaurants count on when reserving tables for us. From this point forward, everyone is starting with a clean slate, and no harm has been done. I take the blame for any infractions up until now. Thank you! Rocks.
  7. Anybody up for a picnic? Traditionally the Don Rockwell Picnics are held at Fort Hunt Park, on a Sunday, at site C-2, typically noonish to late afternoon. People come and go. The event is a pot luck. Some people cook, some people buy food, some bring drinks, some bring serving stuff. Low key. Alcohol is allowed. So are pets. Children warmly encouraged. Games may be played. Of course it won't feel like a picnic without Zora. At any rate, I am up for reserving the spot. Please indicate willingness, and suggest dates. Last time I arbitrarily picked a date but usually we have a vote among the willing.
  8. First of all, do not forget lovehockey's Capitol tour on Sat, May 16 at 11 AM. Once again, we're going to close off Amoo's, either on June 7 or June 28. This will be BYOB like before - this thread is a poll to vote on a date. People are more than welcome to bring their families and friends.
  9. Thanks to Ilaine, we have site C-2 reserved for September 28, 2014. Let's make this the best gosh darned picnic we've ever had!
  10. We're going to be having a dr.com dinner at Amoo's which, like last time, will be BYOB - we'll take over the entire restaurant, and have it all to ourselves. There will be no charge for bringing your own alcohol, but please remember that the staff must wash the stemware. They're also working on an evening they may normally have off, so please tip them generously. The tips are not going to Sebastian; they're going to the waitstaff. It would also be wonderful if people could bring their own stemware, corkscrews, etc., just like they're going to a wine tasting at someone's house. Bring plenty of wine, and share generously with your neighbors and the staff should they want any. The first order of business is determining the date. Sun, Feb 1, 2015 is Super Bowl Sunday so is out - that leaves us with two other Sundays: Jan 18, or Jan 25. While the starting time is TBD, figure it will be something "normal" - 6:30, 7, or 7:30. I favor the early end so people can get home at a reasonable hour, but that's to be determined later. If it's unanimous, we could even start earlier - 6, or even 5:30. That way, you could get home at 8 or thereabouts, and prepare yourself for the work week. So here's a poll: Please pick all dates that you can (and will) attend. Please don't answer this poll unless you're *sure* you will (not just "can," but *will* attend on the dates you select). The date has been cast in stone: Sunday, January 15, 2015. Be there or be carré. Sebastian will be serving, among other things, his famous "Stuffed Squash" dishes. I truly believe he will become renown for this fantastic dish, and I want everyone here to share in its glory. Feel free to add some input as to starting time, but please remember that not every time will accomodate everyone. This will be a wonderful dinner, an absolute bargain, and a fantastic time will be had by all.
  11. We currently have a reservation for September 28th. However, two people have chimed in and said they'd like to come, but can't make it on the 28th. This is to give them, and everyone, a fair chance. This poll will be open for four, and only four, days. I tweeted about it here, and I ask that everyone who sees this retweets my tweet so it gets around as quickly as possible. I want the date set in stone so we can start planning the actual event. Please vote on all dates that you WILL (not can, but WILL) attend. Thanks! Let's rock this picnic out. (Thank you to Ilaine for the work she has done so far.)
  12. NOTE: DO NOT LOOK AT THE POLL RESULTS WITHOUT VOTING FIRST; OTHERWISE, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO VOTE. ------ Ok Folks, so Don and I been having some talks about doing an event exclusively for DR's members at Amoo's!! And ill think of a cool menu to put together for that evening and I promise it'll be pocket friendly as this is more designed to show all of you guys who have supported my family's business over the years, some love!! Here are the dates that I have available for you foodies, Sunday March 15, 2014 Sunday March 22, 2014 Sunday March 29, 2014 let us know what works for you guys
  13. I've never had Sri Lankan food. Anyone interested in getting together to try various dishes at Shakthi? It's at 3807 Mount Vernon Ave in Alexandria. Thread here, website here. Post here if you're interested and what days would work for you. Possible days are sometime next week though that's kind of soon (week of Nov. 18) or the weeks after Thanksgiving (week of Dec. 2 or Dec. 9).
  14. Folks, every once in awhile, a request comes in that's so important that I drop everything else I'm doing, and put 100% of my energies into it. This is one of those times. Eric Reid, Chef of Del Ray Pizzeria, formerly Chef of Del Merei Grille, has made the request, and we must rally for him. Eric employs two dishwashers, Enma Gomez, and her son, Elder Gomez. Last week, Enma's daughter, and Elder's sister, Claudia, was murdered in cold blood in her home in Honduras. She had four children, ages 4 through 14, who are now motherless. After the funeral, the children came up to be with their father and the rest of their family, and are now staying in Alexandria. Here is the news report (if you Google "Claudia Yaneth Membreí±o Gomez," there are plenty of news stories about it), and the details of the benefit follow below: PROGRESS, YORO, HONDURAS; Nov. 13 - Claudia Yaneth Membreí±o Gomez (32), mother of four, was murdered in her home. Claudia was serving dinner to her four children, ages four through fourteen, when three armed men entered to take her life. Membreí±o lived in the neighborhood of the Sociedad de Progresso. Membreí±o had traveled extensively to the United States because of her husband's business contacts. Her husband is a resident of he USA. Police reports allege, Membreí±o was in her home preparing dinner for their children when the gunmen entered. One assailant took her to a separate room, while the others guarded the children. After shooting Membreí±o, the assailants fled the scene and the children were left in the home. The children called for emergency services which took Membreí±o to the public hospital in El Progresso, where she died. A relative reported that she had confided that 15 days ago strangers called the house and left messages "if you do not pay a certain amount of money, you would be killed ". Membreí±o was in the process of joining her Husband in the United States, and was ready to deliver evidence to Investigator lugar Agentes, of The National Directorate of Criminal Investigation ( DNIC ) reported already working on the case to catch the perpetrators. Next Tuesday, November 26th, at 7:00 PM, Del Ray Pizzeria will be having a benefit dinner for the Gomez family. Eric has designed a special menu which will be served in the private dining area upstairs. The special menu is $40, with $20 of the cost going directly into the pockets of the Gomez family. In addition, the owners of Del Ray Pizzeria will match the $20 with their own money, so in essence, 100% of the proceeds ($40 per dinner) will be going directly to the Gomez family, in the form of a cash payment. There's nothing indirect; they're just going to hand them the cash. In addition to this special menu, the owners of Del Ray Pizzeria have agreed that on this evening, 80% of the proceeds from regular menu sales (downstairs) will go directly to the Gomez family, also in the form of a cash payment. So if you get the special menu, if will cost you $40, and 100% of that will benefit the family. If you eat downstairs, you can buy whatever you want, and 80% of what you spend will benefit the family. And if that wasn't enough, Chef Eric Reid is giving up 100% of his salary that day, and the servers and bartenders have agreed to give up 100% of their tips that evening. Again, all in the form of direct cash payment to the Gomez family. Please note: you do NOT have to be a donrockwell.com member to support this cause. Just call the restaurant at (703) 549-2999 - I'll figure out how to merge all the reservations with Eric later. Here is the three-course menu: Special Menu $40 Grilled Camerones with Mango Horseradish Sauce or Grilled Radicchio Salad with Chantrelle Mushrooms, Smoked Goat Cheese or Smoked Tuna with Roasted Garlic Pita Points Low Country Perlou Red Snapper, Clams, Shrimp, Potatoes and Chorizo or Braised Beef Short Rib with Roasted Root Vegetables and Chipotle Demi or Roasted Half Chicken with Pork Tamales and Chicken Jus Plantain Fosters or Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and Rum Caramel Sauce Please RSVP here, and indicate the number of people attending, and whether you will be ordering the special menu upstairs, or the regular menu downstairs. If by chance we can fill up all 38 seats upstairs, we can begin reserving for a second seating afterwards, but let's worry about that problem when we come to it. In addition, for those who cannot go next Tuesday night, but would like to help the Gomez family, I have a PayPal account set up, and will turn over 100% of all monies donated to the Gomez family - I will take the total amount, write Del Ray Pizzeria (or the Gomez family) a check, and print out the list of donations as an audit for all to see (if you want your name to read "Anonymous" just let me know). My PayPal email address is donrockwell@dcdining.com. So there are three ways to help this poor family, and I hope you take the opportunity to do so. I'm hoping to get a lot of people into the restaurant next Tuesday night, but if you can't go, even just donating a couple of dollars will buy a child a meal. It has been a long time since I have felt compelled to ask people in this community for money, but I'm asking now. I know that Eric is going to respond to this also. Please open up your hearts and your wallets for this family.
  15. I just got this message: What more can anyone ask for than a long-cooked, Bangladeshi river fish with rice for our first picnic dish?
  16. On Wednesday, July 17th, we'll be meeting to enjoy Lemon Sours, Beer, and Sake at Izakaya Seki. There's really no particular reason for this happy hour, other than that we'll be saying goodbye to our beloved KMango! who is moving to Dallas-Fortworth with her husband, and therefore we'll be paying tribute to one of the greatest members we've ever had! (She asked me not to make a big deal out of this, and to keep it low key, so I am going to honor her request and nix the marching band. Of course, this won't be "goodbye forever," since she'll be running our Dallas Farmers Market forum once she gets moved in and settled.) Please chime in here and say whether or not you're coming, just so the restaurant knows how big of a space to block off. I will be there.
  17. Redwood is pleased to announce an exclusive, ticketed event in its bar and lounge on Tuesday, March 12 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Twenty wines will be available to sample from wineries such as Tangent, Indaba, Suavia, Terredora di Paolo, Familia Zuccardi and more. This event is in celebration of Chef Antonio Burrell’s new bar menu and Redwood’s newest promotions—half-price wines by the glass on Sundays and Mondays, a new and improved happy hour Monday through Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and live music by Taylor Carson every Tuesday evening. Your $20 ticket gives you access to the wine tasting, a preview of our new bar menu, and half-price on all wines available by the glass for that evening. The new bar menu includes small plate comfort foods like pimento cheese & Surryano ham biscuits, hush puppies, North Carolina style BBQ wings, garlic fried pickles, and more. Award-winning artist Taylor Carson will be preforming live in the bar and lounge area to set the mood for a fun-filled evening. I'm posting this here first so dr.com members can get tickets before we open it up to public. Click the link below to buy tickets. If you have questions, post them in the thread or pm me. If you're at the party, please ask for me or look for the really tall guy with shaggy hair http://20for20redwood.eventbrite.com Colin
  18. This is totally exploratory, but if you'd like to learn something about Korean food, this could be the closest you can get to Korea without travel and airport security and the TSA massage. To Sok Jip is a VERY small restaurant in Annandale. It seats about 30 people. It's always busy (trust me on this, everybody waits unless you are there 10 minutes before they open). There's a good reason for this and it comes out of the kitchen. This is some of the most authentic Korean food in the DC metro area. Now the interesting part. We would like to take no more than 8 people to To Sok Jip for dinner in early February. This will give you a chance to brush up on your Korean and think about food you'd like to try. Dinner should cost around $25 a person. Not quite a Twenty Dollar Tuesday but close. A proposed menu, shared dishes, suggestions to come. We need a serious commitment to this because if To Sok Jip makes space for us, we HAVE to be there. Dinner will be fairly early in the evening because it gets crowded very quickly. Post if you're seriously interested in attending. If we get more than 8 people initially, we will do this again. Feb 12, 2013 at 5:30pm sharp. Do not be late. Bring cash (and your appetite). Second date: Feb 19, 2013. Same rules apply.
  19. Guys, Ted Xenochristos has offered a tour of Cava's production facilities, including how they make their dips, braise their meats, etc. Who's interested? I want to learn how to make KRAFT aka KRAzy FeTa. Ted, Dmitri, Brett, et al, have long been supporters of this community whether you guys know it or not - let's repay them for their friendship by showing them some love. This is a can't-miss big-time product, and it seems like one that's done right.
  20. I love this community. One of our members has offered to give an exclusive tour of the Capitol for donrockwell.com members, Saturday, February 9th, at 11 AM. The tour will be geeky, comprehensive, and will take approximately 2 hours. Here is the initial post (please read carefully about the restrictions): And the follow-up: I could tweet this, and it would sell out tonight. But I'm not going to because I want it to be limited to our loyal members. Just chime in here, and your spot will be reserved. Yes, well-behaved children are welcome, but keep in mind it's a two-hour tour. (Gilligan's Island was only a Threeeeeeeeee-hourrrrrr tour!)
  21. One of my favorite dining experiences was our first Quartiere dinner in Montalcino. The Quartieri are the neighborhood charitable organization that make Italian life so unique. We came to Montalcino at end of season and noticed several posters advertising various dinners for each of the four quartiere. Due to previous commitments the only one that fit our schedule was that of Quartiere Travaglio {the workers quarter}. We arrived at their Cena Di Bolliti {Bolliti refers to the meal: a boiled dinner, and to "bolliti" or hot under the collar" referring to the anger of the poor in a wealthy town. We were quickly accepted as honorary members of Travaglio and enjoyed a meal filled with great food as well as lots of love! It also allowed us to see the folks whose bars, stores and restaurants we loved enjoyed themselves on a well earned night off. Since that evening, our experience of Montalcino is vastly different than before. Every year, we stage a pretty similar meal right after the holidays. Bollito Misto, as served in Montalcino, consists of a wide variety of meats and "parts" simmered in a capon broth and served up as part of a great meal. The meal starts off with some of the simmering broth with fresh hand cut noodles & parsley. Next up was potatoes {we will add organic green beans if we can get some from Homestead Farms in Florida} served with aioli & salsa verde {In the Travaglio tradition, the potatoes were to fill the belly with a small amount of meat to follow.} Next comes the star of the evening, a platter of mixed simmered meats. Our will include Roseda brisket and tongue, D'Artagnan veal breast & capon meat, and more to be determined along with more of the aioli, salsa verde and with a non traditional mustard & horseradish mixture plus house mostarda. A fruit Jam tart is traditional, but we are leaving dessert in a TBD status. The cost of the meal is $39.00. For DR.Com member reserving for January 2 and 3, it is $30 and wine madness will be available to DR.Com members all nights thru the 6th. {wines $50+ are 33% off.} Please do mention DR.Com when you reserve or put it in the notes when reserving thru Open Table. 22. Chef Jeff Heineman announced HERE what must be about the most ridiculously priced donrockwell.com special meal to come along in years. A four-course, mushroom-themed, tasting menu with LAMB CHOP and POMPANO, and FULL WINE PAIRINGS for the insane price of $30. Thirty Dollars! That's $7.50 a course will full wine pairings! For the click-challenged, here are Jeff's details, copied from his announcement. It's this Friday and Saturday night only, and you must call for reservations, and request the "donrockwell.com special." Note that if there is interest, but only if there is interest, he will be running a special each week, so let's throw out support behind this one, my friends! This would be, by far, my number one choice for dining out in the Washington, DC area this weekend. Like Tom Power's recent Corduroy special, the beauty of this is that there's no "event" per se; you and your family or friends can just go to Grapeseed whenever you'd like this weekend, and order it. No specific time, no dining with people you've never met, no awkward conversations with strangers; just raw savings. Please tip well? Dr.com members, please tweet this and tell your friends on Facebook - we need to support Grapeseed for extending this generosity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, Let's see if anybody actually reads this and/or cares about dining out this week. Here is our tasting menu for the week with a DR.com special at the bottom. We will run this menu on Friday and Saturday only. Mushroom Wonderland Menu Amuse Bouche Grilled Portobello Mushroom, Arugula, Prosciutto-Truffle Vinaigrette Sauteed Pompano, Lobster Mushrooms, Maine Lobster Cream Grilled Australian Lamb Chops, Chanterelles, Malbec Reduction Homemade Pumpkin Ice Cream, Dulce de Leche, Oatmeal Cookies We have wine pairings for this, of course. It is $55. If you mention that you heard about it on Donrockwell.com I will only charge $30. Sounds like a deal. Free upgrade from Tastes of wine to Glasses as well. reservations are at 301.986.9592. if there is interest I will run a DR.com special each week
