Just learned that google search will tell you if "some" businesses are busy RIGHT NOW!!! (live information). So I tried it myself. Our office ordered in from the nearby Cheesesteak Factory in Clarendon, and since its a large place I searched in google for CheeseCake Factory in Clarendon...and sure enough on both mobile and desktop there is a LIVE representation of how relatively busy a restaurant, or a super market might be (I tried Trader Joe's in Clarendon also). Here is the live data from a desktop. (It showed on a mobile also) Well its handy information. OTOH, if your business is NEVER busy I don't think you want others to know about it. If its always busy, you don't want competitors to know about it. If you are looking for a quiet or a crowded place to go its helpful information. If you are concerned about privacy, well google is tracking you via the location connections on your mobile, and this isn't the happiest news about just how capable they are of tracking you and others. But its currently out there. BIG BROTHER IS HERE!!!!! Also as of right now it is NOT capturing live data for Earl's Sandwiches of Clarendon:

This is breaking news: Google has just changed the way one sees results when searching for a restaurant (or a hotel, or a nightclub, etc). Instead of the Carousel of up to 20 visual choices that has been available for the past year there are now only 3 very visable results with pictures and attention grabbing info...and then a lot of organic results: Here is a story with the before (as of yesterday) and today results: I've been working on local search "stuff" for a long time. One thing I know is that there are high volumes of searches for restaurants by location (dc, georgetown, U Street, Alexandria, Bethesda, Laurel etc.) and by type (seafood, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, American, etc.) The overall volumes of searches of these types are relatively high volume. The switch to this new view makes those top 3 results very valuable IMHO, and experience. One thing about the web and about google. It always changes.

Whether you are a consumer or a restaurateur, and if you search in google for restaurants by type and town, neighborhood, city, etc. there is a new google presentation in town. Its now visible on all desktops, it's been visible on tablets since Dec, its not showing on mobile. Here is the link per google's announcement: https://plus.google.com/+google/posts/KpsbyvHUotN and here is a screen shot on the above the fold visual results for a search for seafood Alexandria I have no idea how this will affect traffic to restaurant sites. Its new, announced and delivered today. I'm curious as to reactions.
