  1. Starting the 1st week of 2017, Reston Town Center instituted a new paid parking policy utilizing a proprietary parking application and somewhat bizarre method of color-specific parking locations. Apparently people who oppose the policy are voicing their position by not frequenting the numerous businesses there. The local printed press has recently been paying more attention: "Town Center Merchants Considering Lawsuit over Paid Parking" by Dave Emke on restonnow.com The local TV news media is slowly keying into it as well: "Reston Town Center Businesses, Residents, Push Back on Paid Parking" on fox5dc.com
  2. Bartaco opened at Reston Town Center on Monday. We just stopped by early in the evening and by the time we left it was completely packed with a waiting line. Pretty impressive on a weeknight and so recently since it's opening. The atmosphere was casual and staff were friendly and helpful. Our waiter informed us that they have a order slip which we fill out and then place a small blue card on metal stand on the table to notify them when our order was order and for everything else we need. Our tacos ($2.50 each), baja fish, chicken and pork belly were tasty and surprisingly on the level of a place in DC like Oyamel. The non taco part of our order ($5-9 each), guacamole and chips, and tamales were equally as good. We didn't try the rice bowls or desserts. Definitely reasonably priced and good food, a welcome addition to the RTC. If quality remains this high can see it being a part of our regular rotation.   3. This restaurant serves Tapas and Spanish style food on 14th Street. The service at this place is impeccable. While waiting in the bar, there were so many servers and bussers going past and instead of making you feel like they were in their way, they made you feel like they were in your way. The bartenders actively make eye contact with the patrons, instead of you fighting to get their attention. And, in case you didn't know, this place is packed to the brim nightly. I came tonight, on a cold DC Thursday expecting the absolute worst. I've walked in and walked out because I was told there was a 2 hour wait. They don't do many reservations, and I actually don't know their rules for doing them. We were told 1 hour and it ended up being close to 1 hour and 30 minutes. When I went up as the annoying guest asking "are we there yet?" they took the time to tell me why it was taking longer and then let us know an updated time, which was fairly accurate. We were seated by a vivacious and energetic hostess that had been dealing with impatient and likely rude guests all evening, and she never broke her smile the whole night. I came with 7+ a high chair for a 21 month old. We were placed at a cozy table and I'll tell the truth, we told them 6, and added one at last minute. We were those people. They added a chair and we got very close. Waters delivered immediately, two waiters introduced themselves, and took drink orders. They also told us that specific dishes took a long time (paella and grilled meat platters), which got us to put those in first. We ordered 2 patatas bravas, 2 asparagus with aioli, seafood paella, a churrasco, multiple hamachi crudos, gambas ajillo, 2 tortillas, blood sausage, 2 chorizo with fig, scallops, lamb chops, 2 lamb burgers, 2 beef empanadas.. I think that's all of it. The pacing was impeccable. Rarely were we overburdened. Service was slowed down when it needed to be, but with attention to whether we needed more drinks. The food quality was high - highlights included lamb chops, churrasco, chorizo, hamachi crudo... Paella was not like Barcelona the city, but tasty in it's own right. Not one dish was bad. I never order patatas bravas because stateside it's essentially French fries and hot sauce, but here the fiery tomato sauce and aioli made it impressive. I can't really get thinking about the food, even though it was fabulous, I'm just so impressed at the way the restaurant presented itself. A prince amongst men... I hated the idea of this place - a Connecticut chain, the hottest gals and guys in DC, a hostess that could be a model, a fancy bar and terribly long wait times. But, sometimes the execution and the effort overstate any potential negatives. If the food gets any better and the service stays the same, this place will last a long time. And, final caveat - I freaking hate tapas state side.
  4. Mon Ami Gabi from Lettuce Entertain You (which has an outpost in Bethesda) will open in one of two ten story office buildings currently under construction. Il Fornaio from California will open in Midtown West which is one of the 21 story condominiums. If anyone knows of any of the several other new restaurants scheduled for Town Center please post them here. On Linda Roth's website she notes that a high profile midwestern restaurant group is opening two concept restaurants in Fairfax county. Mon Ami Gabi is certainly one of them. Could this be the other: http://www.cafebabareeba.com/ Just a guess for this. As an aside, for me, it is a shame that most if not all of the new restaurants will be part of national groups as opposed to locally owned or chef owned and operated. Where are Jeff Black or the group that did DC Coast/Ten Penh/Ceiba, etc.? Excepting Maestro, Colvin Run Tavern and 2941 western Fairfax County is becoming something of a wasteland for "regional" excellence. I suppose that I should be thankful that we even have these....
  5. Midtown Kabob is located in the Reston Town Center near Crunch Gym. I have been meaning to try it just as a comparison to Reston Kabob, which is kind of my standard by which all others are judged. Last night after gym classes I was feeling the need for red meat. I kind of wanted a normal steak sandwich, but Morton's only has a steak sandwich at lunch and I wasn't really feeling their bar vibe in my work out gear. I headed to Midtown Kabob and ordered the steak kabobs with mixed veggies. $14 got me a generous serving of steak with grilled pepper, onion, and tomato, salad, rice, bread and a small cup of peas and potatoes in a yellow sauce. I have never had beef at Reston Kabob, so I can't compare that. The bread is different, but I still thought it was good, but not as good as Reston Kabob. It seems to be whole wheat. I liked that not only did it have salad but the grilled veggies too, about half a fair sizd green pepper, 1/4 onion and 1/4 tomato. Reston Kabob doesn't have that. I thought their steak was nicely flavored. It was fairly tender for the cut of meat and had a nice seasoning. The mixed veggies were forgettable. They just didn't have a lot of seasoning. Next time I will try another side, maybe the spinach. White and Green sauces are in the fridge for eat in. All in all I thought it was pretty good, I had enough for leftovers for today.
