La Fromagerie is a new cheese shop that will be opening soon in Old Town (corner of King and Payne Streets). From the website, it looks like the focus will be on American products. Anybody have any additional details? -
Have been stopping at the wholesale bakery for Balthazar located in Englewood NJ for 2 days. Wonderful breads plus amazing tarts which might be more like spectacular toppings the likes of which I’ve never had. -
Its not a restauraunt but it is a purveyor of food. Run out of an industrial park in Chantilly, Lobster Maine-ia has gotten some recent press. I've gotten some lobsters from them and I am not a connaisseur but they were darned tasty and cheaper than a grocery store. Its also worth it to have them steam them for you (costs extra), put them in a cooler and take them home. Recently they started selling lobster rolls. As I need to be near there every sunday for a kids activity, I have swung in and tried them twice and as far as lobster rolls go (maine style) they are pretty darned good. They are 10 dollars and are zero frills, but they have a goodly amount of meat. Check ahead of time before you go, they have limited hours and weekends are best but they are worth trying if you are in need of a lobster fix. -

Cheers, DR] Lol, a bit of a random question. Which I welcome! I would be shocked if there isn't a nearby liquor store in Dupont Circle, for cryin' out loud. That said, I would be also somewhat shocked if they also sold "single serves" of beers, which many ANCs pushed to restrict, since it often leads to unregulated "outside bars" of people just loitering and drinking them on the street. Of course, now if they are craft fancy beers, they seem to find a way. So, good luck on "a can or bottle." I would love to hear about your motivation. -
I think Breadline has changed hands as well. With regard to the breads sold by Dean and Deluca, I understand that they are baked by Gold Crust Baking at the corner of Rt. 1 and Monroe Avenue in Alexandria. I understand that GCB also supplies the White House mess. -

It's hard to roast coffee beans well. It really is. There are many variables including pre-roast bean processing, bean provenance, bean freshness, type of roasting machine, temperature, time, moisture, labor and still many others. It's also hard to own a great and enduring coffee shop (retailer) for many reasons that don't need belaboring. Around the US, there are many shops that both roast and retail. In my humblest of opinions, a minority do both well. Here in the DC area, we have several integrated roaster/retailers including Qualia (best imo), Dublin (Frederick), Caffe Amouri (Vienna) and, one of the newest, Compass Coffee in Shaw. It's just my view but I generally have a strong preference for shops that focus on the retailing experience while outsourcing roasting by using beans from the many great regional and national roasters like Counter Culture, Intelligentsia, Ceremony, Stumptown, Blue Bottle, Heart, Novo, Coava, Handsome, PT's and many, many more.
