  1. All: Wanted everyone to know about this Popup from Chef Will (formerly of Evening Star and Pizzeria Orso). If you have ever had a meal with him, you know this is going to be great! Menu is on the site and I hope to see you there! Amalia's Fancy by Will Artley The Story As I search out the next landing spot I wanted to get back in front of the stove and put together a one of a kind menu that highlights both my Mexican heritage and global travels. This menu will be a tasting progression so unfortunately substitutions will be unavailable. I'm going to provide flavors and textures that you haven't experienced before. This menu is dedicated to my loving mother who taught me the love , joy & soul of cooking. Growing up I was always asking her what she was cooking"¦. she always replied "botanas para los preguntones" - Snacks for the inquisitive"¦..so this menu is just that"¦..come join me "¦ Chef Will Artley The Popup Reservations What: $75 11-course tasting menu (alcohol not included) When: December 1st through the 3rd 2014 Where: 4580 Duke Street; Alexandria, VA 22314 Popup Contact Info: chefwillartley (at) gmail (dot) com Media Contact Info: mel (at) goldstandardpr (dot) com http://www.roughindustries.com/collections/amalias-fancy
  2. DONROCKWELL.COM to cease operations after today Where the hell is Don these days? Seems like he is spending more time on Facebook then he is on the board. Well I thought I would step in and try to get everyone caught up. DONROCKWELL.COM signed its 1 millionth member last night. Unfortunately it also had its 1 millionth and one triple space that drove Don over the edge. He has now, and I quote, embraced that Yelp is the place to be, and has taken off to sample every restaurant in Purcellville, or what he precedes to think is the next big thing in DC Dining, white trash cooking. Let's catch up with the latest Chef gossip. Will Artley has lost a ton of weight. Serious weight, and he is ready to preach on the perils of obesity. He is taking over the old INOX space in Tysons for his new venue "Founding Fatters", it's sort of an east meets west, combo gym, yoga studio and upscale restaurant with a coffee bar. Discounts for anyone who has ever thought about doing an iron man, running one is optional. Chef Seb over at Amoo's is trying to beat Dean Gold's record for the biggest social media presence, most emails and Facebook posts sent out of any one restaurant. We wish Sebastian the best in his endeavors. Jeff Heinman is doing some amazing things in Bethesda, basically for $10 dollars you get a huge meal at lunch, but wait there is more, come in twice in one week and he will upgrade your meal with a "happy meal" to go, come in three times and he will include a dessert, four times, he adds a free adult beverage, five times and he calls the police because he is not open for lunch on Monday and Saturday. Have you tried Baby Wale yet? Coming soon is their new Baby menu, basically baby meats, baby vegetables, small portions and optional high chairs. Should I mention"¦. Dean Gold has disappeared. Last seen he was searching for his new location and got a little lost, he went over a bridge and is somewhere in NOVA. If you see him let us know. Dean has always had a bit of trouble navigating. Do you still have your Don Rockwell.com membership card? Ebay value is up these days. As usual I could care less about your day, find someone that does. 2013 http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/19323-opening-day-specials/#entry226573 2012 http://www.donrockwe...ll/#entry205369 2011 who the hell squidsdc knows http://www.donrockwe...nt/#entry185338 2010 http://donrockwell.c...ndpost&p=159974 2007-2009 http://donrockwell.c...indpost&p=75259
  3. The Celebration Dinner for Patrick raised over $21,000. My kudos to the chefs, the line cooks, the wait staff, the servers, who made this happen. Patrick's Memorial Fund has over $28,000 that will be used to benefit his daughters, Maya and Brianna, for their college education. Thanks from our family, to the family of chefs who made all this happen. I have forgotten so many people......Adam, Anthony, you know who you are.....love, Kathy and Guy, Brianna and Maya.....
  4. We had our pre-Thanksgiving repast in Orso tonight, and Will wasn't giving any Chopped results away - and I didn't press him, either. The restaurant is having a viewing party (public invited) Sunday night at 10 PM for Will's episode. I just saw this show for the first time with Matt (the one where Chef Desaintmartin won), and I can see Will advancing, and perhaps winning, but I'm not sure his forté is rapid menu development, and that's a large part of this; I can easily see him not winning if he can't throw something together quickly (but that, does not a chef, make). He's got the personality to do well on these types of shows (although based on what I saw, substance won over personality during the judging process which is what made it worthwhile to watch for me - I saw no favoritism, and I respected that). The show was fun, intentionally over-dramatic, and the judges (hopefully intentionally) annoying, but for the most part, astute. Matt has been trying to get me to be on these shows for awhile now, and if I could get over my camera shyness, I think I'd be good at it. Who knows what the future holds in store? Good luck to Chef Will! Don and Matt
  5. Thanks to all these chefs who made Patrick's Culinary Tribute Dinner incredible. Food and wine were incredible. The silent auction raised over $5000 for Patrick's daughters. Thank's to Don and Tom Sietsema for publicizing the event. People who love food gathered together to celebrate Patrick's culinary life. He and Haidar were roommates for over 4 years....his daughters, who are 14 and 17, will benefit greatly from your wonderful contributions. Twenty of his cookbooks were sold, and raised over $3,000 for their education fund. Daniel Boulud, Haidar, and Green Pig Bistro raised another $2,000. Our family is blessed with the love of chefs, and the love of good food, in Washington. Thanks, his Momma...
  6. What an incredible dinner at 2941 Restaurant on Sunday evening to celebrate the life of Patrick Deiss, my son. The appetizers and the tasting menu were so "over the top." The wine pairings were so wonderful. My husband want's to go back to work so we can afford some of the awesome bottles we were served. Thanks to all the chefs who contributed; thanks to all the people "behind the scenes" who were sponsors: D'Artagnan, Daniel Bouloud, purveyors in the food and wine industry in DC, produce people, meat people, everyone who Pat came in contact with in his life as a chef. It was a wonderful celebration of his life, and the silent auction, alone, raised over $5000 for his daugher's education. I am one proud Momma, and one grateful member of the beautiful DC dining scene. Thank's so much to Don Rockwell and Tom Sietsema for advertising this dinner.
