  1. Hi, everybody. I'm relatively new to this forum -- have posted a few times and am really enjoying this bunch. It's so nice to know there is a thriving food and wine community here in Washington, and it's even nicer that you all know a lot more about this stuff than I do. It's a great place to learn. While this question may make me sound like a complete idiot, I swear I actually do know a thing or two about wine. This particular situtation is unfortunate and I am trying like hell to figure out how my assumptions might be incorrect. I'm in denial, and hoping you all can help me. A really lovely friend of mine has been raving about Raveneau Chablis, which I have never tried. Because he is so lovely, he shipped a bottle to me this week with a very nice note about how much he wants me to try it and how he is looking forward to my reaction and detailed tasting notes. Here's the problem -- when the wine arrived at my door, the wax seal protecting the cork had a small crack in it, and it was apparent that some wine had escaped. My brain is telling me that the wine is probably ruined. But I REALLY want to be wrong. I know the only way to be sure is to crack the sucker open and give it a try. But I'm interested to know if anyone has had this sort of thing happen and had the wine turn out OK. To follow -- if it's not OK, does anyone know where I might be able to get a replacement bottle? The distributor that supplies my usual wine shop does not carry Raveneau, and I don't have the heart to tell my friend the wine he was so excited to send me was bad. And I obviously can't give him detailed tasting notes without actually trying it. Thanks everyone. Sorry this was so long... Lola
  2. any thoughts on home wine refrigerators? I've put wine-rack shelving in an interior room (NOT a basement) but am thinking that more consistent temps, and lower summertime temps, would be good for the handful of good bottles I've got, and I also think it'd be nice to keep some whites chilled so I can make last-minute pre-dinner decisions about what to drink that aren't driven by what I remembered to put in the fridge. So how useful or important is it to have dual-zone controls? what about other features - slide-out shelves, interior lights, etc. - how important are they? are flat shelves better than contoured? should I worry about warranties (do these things break down a lot)? any brands people like or don't like?
  3. I have four wooden wine racks which hold 63 individual bottles each (7 rows, 9 bottles per row). They measure about 32" wide by 34" high, and look a lot like these (yes, these are $260 each). I'm sure I could sell them on Craigslist, but I'd rather give them away to our members. If anyone wants them, they can have them (you'd just need to come by and pick them up). You don't have to take all four.
  4. I have some extra wooden wine racks that folks can have, but they'll need a minivan or SUV to get them. Diamond storage (about 100 bottles). They're old, but still functional. They're actually modular, so you can take them apart and put them back together (you could even paint them, and would need to disassemble them before you do). Here's what they look like: http://www.wineracksamerica.com/Wine_Cellar_Kits/Diamond_Wine_Bins/solid_cube.html#afc=winerackguide The ones pictured are a bit nicer than mine, but pretty much the same thing (I think mine are redwood). Again, mine are about 20 years old so they're not perfect, and maybe even need some reenforcing here or there. But ... they're free for the taking.
