mbalaver
Does anyone know where I can buy a slice of good coconut cream pie? I have a friend with a birthday coming up who mentioned today that that's her all-time favorite dessert. I need to be able to buy by the slice -- if I buy her a pie she will kill me. siamesechin
Off the top of my head, there's always Giant food's bakery case. That's an "easy" and boring answer though, I know. Also, I had coconut cream pie a while back at Silver Diner. It was good, but the coconut tasted like it was enhanced with coconut extract. It kind of reminded me of my high school tanning oil, w/o the sunscreen. I was a stupid teen who didn't believe in proper SPF protection, but I digress. So yes, Silver Diner's is okay. HT sells a mini-cream pie (I brought the Sour Cream Lemon once) in the bakery fridge that was pretty good. Call: Dangerously Delicious Mom's Apple Pie (Leesburg) Pie Gourmet (Vienna) Bayou Bakery (Arlington) and see if they have slices? Good luck! ktmoomau
Capitol Grille, and no offense, but HT uses whip cream, that to me is NOT coconut cream pie, which needs to have meringue. Hard to find a good one in these parts.

An excuse to post the link to what may be the single most incredible thread of any message board that I have ever seen: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/To-all-the-pies-I39ve-loved-before-m434990.aspx A vote for Johnny Ray's in Birmingham. This term gets tossed around too often, but if that's not food porn I don't know what is. One vote for Dhalia Bakery in Seattle if you want it classy. One vote for Zarour's in Chattanooga TN if you want it dirty. I'm keeping my fingers crossed someone on this thread will spill the beans on where to find a decent slice of coconut or banana cream. At this point I'll take decent.

The even had a picture of Du-par's boysenberry pie--the favorite pie of my childhood (at Du-par's in the L.A. Farmer's Market, not the pictured one in San Diego). Mmmfff.. one of the challenges of living on the right coast: no boysenberries.

weezy
I've not had any coconut cream pies, but I have never seen it with meringue before. Is this a regional thing or a common thing? I thought it was common. Maybe you're thinking of a coconut custard pie? A similar beast that has simply a plain baked surface.
ktmoomau
I've not had any coconut cream pies, but I have never seen it with meringue before. Is this a regional thing or a common thing? It might be a Southern thing (I never know if things are Southern things because I have never lived in the North or West, well some things I know, but some I just assume everyone knows.)? But if you google it most all the pics that come up have meringue not whip so I thought it was a standard benchmark for the pie. I have a bad habit of being a pie snob though because my family and nanny all make incredible pies.

I grew up on Baker Square pies in the midwest and the coconut and the banana cream pies were always topped with whipped cream.

After looking at the calendars of other WF stores in the area this special appears to be happening at the Arlington location only.

Genevieve
Mmm. Wish they'd sell it by the slice, though! (I know, at that price . . . but I don't need 5 extra slices.) Had a very good coconut custard pie (not the same thing, but delicious) at Johnny's Half Shell this weekend.
goodeats
I walked by Foggy Bottom and they had a sign out advertising this special, even though it's not on their calendar. Coconut cream pie!

saf
But is it topped with whip or meringue I can't tell. (Apparently, they have the pies at the Old Town Alexandria store. Got this picture when the +1 went out from work for lunch.)
goodeats
It was whipped cream topped and it is quite good for WF standards!
Joe H
1. Chef Vola's, Atlantic City 2. Johnny Ray's, Birmingham 3. Buckhead Diner, Atlanta 4. Emeril's, original Tschoupitolis Street, New Orleans All of the above will suppliment post #5 in this thread. The link in that thread should stand as the benchmark for any thread on any board anywhere.

Moku
The Fairfax (not Dulles) Wegman's sometimes has the best Coconut Cream Pies during the summer. No slices though.
alwayshungry
Hey, all, At the risk of being self-serving, I'll go ahead and suggest this, because--who knows? It could serve you, too: I make pies to order, including coconut cream... www.curvymamapies.com Catherine
