Driving back from the O.C. this weekend and we stopped off in Easton to check out the Tidewater Inn, the venue for our friends' upcoming wedding. (The gf is co-maid of honor and the bride-to-be wanted to show us around)
We decided to stick around and have dinner at the Inn's pub/restaurant, the Hunter's Tavern.
Dinner started out well, the Maryland Cream of Crab soup and the Snapper Turtle Soup was everything desired on a chilly evening, luscious, thick, creamy, although perhaps a little skimpy on the crab and turtle. The soups were served with a decanter of sherry for fortification.
After a weekend of eating junk at the beach, the fish tacos sounded like a light welcome break - grilled rockfish in taco form. wrong. Out came one of those large tortillas that had been deep fried into bowl shape, filled with shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, a meager helping of fish (with several large fish bones), and slathered in sour cream and guac. Who makes this anymore, let alone puts it on a menu? Fucking gross.
The lesson here - when dining on the Eastern Shore, go with Eastern Shore standards. If you want fish tacos go to the Western Shore.

Maybe one other lesson: if dining in Easton, you really, really must try either the Eastern Shore's best place, the Bartlett Pear Inn, The BBQ Joint or, ideally, both. I've eaten at Tidewater--not in the same galaxy as those two. This has been a public service announcement.<Snip>
