Alternatives To Ricola And Cherry Cough Drops

Thanks to a rockin sore throat I have sounded like Jessica Rabbit going through puberty for about the past four days now and am getting tired of sucking on ricola and cherry ludens.

Right now I would love a good savory lozenge to soothe my throat.

Other than going over to Komi and begging them to try to make a gnocchi flavored lollipop does anyone have a good suggestion? Something different? (Carrying around hot beverages isn't an option during the day )

Join the club. Have you been gargling with warm salt water? If not, you should. I have found the Cepacol Sore Throat lozenges to help, but only temporarily. Trust me, I feel your pain. :)

Maker's Mark and anything warm would soothe a lot, and not just my throat (fist fight Monday anyone :) ).

I've spent the day eating spoonfuls of honey to coat my throat.

Anyone remember those ludens that you sucked on that were kind of gummy, not a hard candy? I can't find them anywhere.

If it's anything like the one I had two weeks ago, lozenges didn't do diddly for me until about day 5. Then again, the back of my throat looked a bit like the surface of the moon. Gargle frequently with warm saltwater. I had no luck with Cepacol, but cherry-flavored Robitussin drops seemed to work, at least once things had died down to an irritated cough.

When your appetite returns, hit up Panjshir II in Vienna for a bowl or two of comforting aush soup.

Get well soon!

For numbing my throat into absolute dead-to-the-worldness, I've always been a devotee of the Chloraseptic spray stuff. Sure, they say to use it only every couple of hours. But if you use it more, it actually works.

Maybe a gum to change it up a little? Cold-eeze has a slightly metallic taste -- I think it's got zinc in it -- but has helped me get over illnesses in the past. If you want to cut the sweetness, it might work.

Feel better.

Whole foods has Elderberry Eccanacea extract. It does some good. They also have lozenges with zinc and elderberry. I think its by Quantam.

Herb Pharm has an eccanacea spray, that while disgusting int he taste de[artment, makes one feel numb in the throat if not downright better.

Sees chocolate, latte, and vanilla lollipops will at least coat your throat. There's a Sees cart in the Galleria at Tysons for the holiday shopping season.

And while it is a hot beverage, the Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat tea (Whole Foods and any other health food store) is very soothing. If you like licorice, you'll like the taste. The active ingredient is slippery elm bark. I found some slippery elm lozenges a few years ago (at Whole Foods, I think) but they were vile.

A carafe of hot sake may also do the trick, but your workplace may frown upon it.

Are you thinking of Pine Bros.?  I loved those (still do, when I can find 'em).

Wait, excuse me, pardon me, HOLD THE PRESSES- where on god's green earth have you found them?! :)

I adored these things but haven't been able to find them in years. I ate them as candy really, but they did a nice job at least coating a throat, rather than the crappy Luden drops we have now. ugh.

Alas, to stay on topic, I have no soothing throat solutions. And I have one now too. Pity.

I loved these when I was a kid and seemed to hav sore throats every other week. Maybe I just wanted more Pine Bros.

On topic, Cepacol is my go to lozenge when my throat is so scratchy it hurts to talk. Can't have that. It numbs a little in addition to coating.

This is the closest I found to Pine Bros. in a quick search :)

I just thought people here may be interested in knowing that if you rearrange the letters in "Pine Bros" you can get "penis orb." Likewise:

Girl: Bris? Nope.

PB: (Opens bir)

Girl: Sin probe?

PB: Probe's in.

Girl: Pin bores.

PB: Sip boner.

Girl: Rise on, PB!

PB: Bone rips?

Girl: Nip b sore.

PB: (Bies porn)

Girl: PB, I snore.

The best is horehound candy. It's really an acquired taste (licorice-like, but more herbal and bitter), and might be hard to find. You might be able to find some in old timey drugstores.

Otherwise, look for a plant like this: F2682.JPG.

Boil it up to make tea, and use the liquid to make a simple hard-crack candy...
