A dear friend is finally throwing in the towel and admitting her two-year old Belgian Malinois has a behavior problem. She is seeking a trainer to coach her for several hours on ways to improve behavior during daily walks.

PM or post here with any contacts. Proximity to Arlington/Falls Church is ideal, but all ideas welcomed.

This sounds like a ruff problem.

And I know *you* know this, but in case anyone doesn't, the "Pet Care" index may be a good starting point for this. (Is it?)

---

For our under-30 crowd who may not have heard this:

A man walks into a bar with a dog.

The bartender says, "Hey! You can't bring that dog in here."

"You don't understand," says the man. "This is no regular dog, he can talk!"

"Listen, pal," says the bartender. "If that dog can talk, I'll give you a hundred bucks."

The man puts the dog on a stool, and asks him, "What's on top of a house?"

"Roof!"

<bartender stands without expression>

"And what's the opposite of smooth?"

"Rough!"

<bartender becomes more annoyed>

"And what's on the outside of a tree?"

"Bark!"

<bartender's scowls>

"And who's the greatest baseball player of all time?"

"Ruth!"

<bartender turns red with anger>

"I guess you've heard enough," says the man. "I'll take the hundred in twenties."

"Listen, pal," the bartender says, "get out of here before I belt you!" He comes around to the front of the bar, grabs the man by the shirt, and drags him out the door, the dog trotting alongside.

As soon as they're out in the street, the dog turns to the man and says, "Do you think I should have said 'DiMaggio'?"

Companion Animal Behavior is a great group of Masters-level behaviorists. More expensive than routine trainers, but know more than most.

Woofs Dog Training - Arlington. Very good classes. I'm pretty sure they do personalized training, too.

Veronica Sanchez - Good trainer. Lives in Vienna, but will travel to Arlington/Falls Church.

Rudy's Friends - Good trainer. Lives in Vienna, but will travel.

As a veterinarian, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention there are veterinary behaviorists in the area, but I suspect your friend just needs some basic training tips to help get the Malinois under control.

Feel free to contact me if you need more info.

Sandy

I'm working with Gwen at Kissable Canines and I couldn't be happier. My girl is just a pup and not a problem (yet), but Gwen's been outstanding--she comes to the house, and every time she leaves I can't believe how much dog has learned. I recommend her highly.

I second Veronica Sanchez! I helped her train her first dog and she has gone on to become a brilliant trainer!
I also highly recommend Carole Peeler: http://www.positivek9training.com/. Again, I have known her and worked with her for at least 2 decades. She is an excellent trainer, well-versed in dealing with various types of aggression.

I'll second Carole Peeler. I didn't include her because I thought she tried to focus west of Arlington, but I'm sure she's not that restrictive.

My friend was over-the-moon delighted with the quality of the responses here. I see her again in another week or two and will learn how it turned out.
