Helping the Elderly

When Karen had less than a week to live, the conversation went something like this:

"What in God's name am I supposed to do for the next 50 years?"

She looked at me, but didn't answer.

"Karen, you've *got* to tell me what you want me to do with the rest of my life. Please!"

She really didn't fully comprehend what I was asking, but she answered anyway:

"Do something to help older people."

It is the 1967 film, The Whisperers, that has inspired me to fulfill her dying wish (or, in less dramatic terms, her response to my desperate question).

We all love Katherine Hepburn, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1967 for the film "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner." But once you've seen Dame Edith Evans in "The Whisperers," you realize just how unjust these awards are. Hepburn was fine in that film, but there's no comparison. None.

In one of the greatest masterpieces of acting I've ever seen in my life, Evans, in her role as Margaret Ross, is going to be singlehandedly responsible for me getting off my first-world posterior, and taking action on something I've been putting off for far too long.

An obscure, extremely rare, 45-year-old film has given me the motivation to do it.

I will not sit by idly any longer and let the elderly suffer.

NOT forgotten, Michael.
