DonRocks Posted January 8, 2007 Author Share Posted January 8, 2007 I know that Rocks, crackers, mktye and I are the only people who pay attention (and for Rocks it's only during the daylight ) but we have had a huge bump in our membership numbers over the past few weeks. Friday alone 10 members were activated. We haven't had that many people activated in one day since we were getting all of the publicity this time last year.Even better, new members are joining in and people who are long time members-first time posters are joining the conversation as well. Just a few weeks ago a number of us were trying to figure out how to get new members and non posting members active. I guess all we had to do is sit back and welcome them in. Must be because we're being nice to each other or something I also want to add that mktye is taking "two steps forward, one step back" since we're now doing monthly prunings of inactive users. We've done this since the one-year point of the website - if someone signed up over a year ago, has never posted, and hasn't signed in during the past 12 months, we go ahead and remove their membership. Linked/mentioned on another a food blog/forum 3. From a friend/member Without you all, word would not spread and we'd not be drawing in the new people who keep the membership growing. So thank you to those who post about your dining experiences, cooking adventures, favorite beverages, out-of-town eating and so on. Without your posts, the googlebot and its ilk would have nothing to record and DR.com would not show up in web searches. And thank you to those who write about DR.com on your blogs, personal web pages and other forums. Links to nearly all of those can be found here. Last but not least, thank you to those who talk about DR.com with your friends, colleagues and acquaintances. The relationships and interactions between members are what make this site something special and more than just a big database. If any of you are wondering what actually goes on during the member registration process, here is a quick (well, as quick as I can make it ) run-down: Register here to enter your choice of log-in name, display name and email address. This information then goes to create an account and you are listed as "Validating" in the registration queue. The password you enter always remains completely private and none of the administrators ever have access to it (which is why, if you forget your password, we need to reset it to something else). Daily (usually around mid-morning), I send out validation letters to all of those who have registered in the last 24 hours. One of the main purposes of this letter is to show that the email address you gave when registering is a valid, working email address. We also ask for your first and last names, city of residence, how you found DR.com and if you are in the food industry (food writer, chef/cook, server, sommelier, food educator, food chemist, food/dining-related business owner and so on). This information is kept strictly private and only available to Don Rockwell and the site's membership administrators. Might I suggest a bolder move, removing ".com" and extending the name further across a banner with imagery and/or design elements that nod to the nature of the site? It would be wonderful if long-time members could brainstorm and suggest something unique to Donrockwell.com or local dining/culinary scene that might be a worthy signature or icon. (No visual puns on name.) The only thing that comes to mind to this relatively new member is the ventworm cake. The website being down may be completely coincidental to this - I doubt they'd simply pull the plug on four days notice. I also note that my hosting package expires tomorrow (it's around the two-year mark) which may have had something to do with it. But I suspect this may have just been the server going down randomly - either way I'll deal with this behind the scenes. Dedicated servers START at $229/month, and I'm hopeful that there could simply be some inefficiency that can be corrected - there hasn't been any "sudden and rapid growth" - but this could quickly turn into Ouchville. Here you are, a slab on the morgue table, and they slice open your gut to find out what your last meal was...and they find two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. I'll be taking the existing "Farmers Markets" thread and moving it over ther from the Shopping and Cooking forum. Slowly, when I can find some time, I'll be splitting that thread into one thread for each individual farm, one thread for each individual market, etc. Hillvalley and zoramargolis will host that forum, and for now the Events and Gatherings forum will be left unhosted, the thought being that anyone and everyone should feel free to organize events, anytime you want, without a lot of red tape or bureaucracy. (Let's not forget this is the very reason this website came into existence.) cucas87 will be helping to organize things, and monavano will be keeping the calendar updated, so please keep these two abreast of anything you wish to organize (flip me a PM too, please). If we ever have any "official" dr.com events (and it seems like there is, or was, a decline in interest in these), I'll figure out what to do about that stuff later. Maybe we'll become more formal and organized as time goes on, but for now I don't see the need.
