DonRocks
On a whim, my friend and I stopped into Phu Quy Deli Delight yesterday, and were pretty well blown away by what we found. It's a bulk-food only (think: dispensers at Whole Foods), 1/4-pound minimum little store with the most amazing selection of beef jerky I've ever seen: eighteen (yes, 18) different types. $20 later, I got to sample three 1/4-pound orders of the most remarkable dehydrated items: okra, mushrooms, and cranberries. While the cranberries were a sentimental favorite due to their sweetness, the mushrooms were perhaps the most remarkable, looking exactly like ... mushrooms, but having the consistency of crackers. Equally impressive was the okra which, while completely dry, still had the impression of that viscous, boiled-okra, mucous trait, whispering in the background. If you haven't tried this, you must. It's in the same building as Seaside Crab House, across from Pho & Exotic Fruit. On a side note, I had dinner at Nha Trang last night, and am happy to report that, despite the bad news about the matriarch, two of the exact dishes I had before were just as good, and the restaurant remains in Italic in the Dining Guide. The service is a bit "casual," and French-influenced in that you have to call the staff over if you want something, but if you know that going in, you won't mind. TheMatt
Stop tempting me, Don! I'm already thinking of getting some beef jerky this weekend! Never knew about this place... And, of course, if I go to Eden Center, I always seem to leave with a $6 box of fried tofu from Thanh Son. So addictive...
DonRocks
Stop tempting me, Don! I'm already thinking of getting some beef jerky this weekend! Never knew about this place... And, of course, if I go to Eden Center, I always seem to leave with a $6 box of fried tofu from Thanh Son. So addictive... Did you go, and if so, what did you think? I can't imagine anyone going and at least not being ... "impressed." Once the gentleman realizes you're there to buy, he will happily give you tastes of the dehydrated vegetables (I'd go: mushroom, cranberry, okra, in that order, before committing to an entire 1/4-pound order of any of them.) V.H.
The beef jerky here is top notch, very tender and flavorful. What I really enjoyed though was the cuttlefish jerky. Sweet, spicy, and tender but with just the right amount of chew. I appreciate that everything is sold by weight, more opportunities to try different items.
TheMatt
Went in this morning for some jerky. Tried a few versions and got the lemongrass and one of the spicy varieties (of which there are a few!). Both very tender and good. I see myself coming back often! And then got some fried tofu at Thanh Son. Because one must.
yeah
They've expanded over to the space that was Seaside Crab House as well as the outdoor seating under the "tent." With Ban Ta temporarily (I hope) out of commission, this may now be the strongest Banh Mi in Eden Center. They supposedly use the bread from neighboring Banh Mi So #1 but I like the fillings here better. Grilled chicken, pedestrian and dry as it is elsewhere, has a nice smokiness and is lean and moist (enough). "Combination" choices are headcheesy as you need them to be, and the sardine is abundant, funky and delicious if cut with enough cilantro and jalepeno. Not as crazy about the Lee's iced coffee they serve; I'd recommend getting the banh mi here and coffee at the coffee next door at So #1. And Thanh Son remains a must.
