The Best Sandwich Place, A Local Sandwich Shop in Georgetown Harbor and Farragut West

I'm hoping this thread will be a holding place for any you might come across until there is some response that merits a thread split.

So I'll start: Three I've heard about recently. Do any of them deserve their own thread?

French Quarter Café - Cajun in Germantown (9847 Century Blvd. in Germantown Town Center; 301-515-7693).

The Best Sandwich Place - 18th and L (approximately)

The Best Sandwich Place is in the first floor of 1801 K, a building you can enter on either K or L Street. (It's right next door to the Borders bookstore that looks like it's rising out of the ground.) I used to work in that building, and the proprietor and his friendly staff could count on seeing me a few times a week. While I worked in the building, the shop just about doubled its size, adding a seating area.

Their turkey sandwiches are fantastic -- as someone posted elsewhere, it's fresh roast turkey, sliced right off as you order, that I would often top with fresh avocado. Yum! Haven't found a sandwich as good near my new office, but that's par for the course -- I think all of the lunch options near 18th and L are better than those near Metro Center...

Also good are their egg and cheese sandwiches at breakfast.

I don't remember them having fresh baked bread, as someone else posted, but it's been a few months since I've been there, and things may have changed.

I had their Cuban sandwich for lunch today. Instead of roast pork, which is the customary ingredient in a Cuban, they used salami and ham. With some melted cheese and crispy pickles, damned tasty. Also, the $1 extra for a bag of chips and a can of soda makes a full, brown bag, lunch.

Leave it to you guys to find a place I'd never heard of in the heart of downtown.

There's also a little carryout place in the vicinity called Steamship, which carves their own meats for sandwiches. I haven't been there in many years, but I see it's still in business.

Based on the review in this thread, I tried the cuban today for lunch. I'll say that it was decent. 6 out of 10. My cheese wasn't really melted, which turned me off and I would have liked to have had more pickles. Good, crusty bread, though. I also really like the fact that it's not riduculously huge and gut inducing.

Hmmm. The cheese on my Cuban yesterday was well melted, an inconsistency. Perhaps the thing to do is to ask them to make sure the cheese is well melted before taking it out of whatever it is they use to heat it up. You should try the Cuban at Dicky's over on I between 17th and 18th.

I got their turkey carving board special today. I thought it would be more moist, but instead it was kind of a dry mess. Although I was happy that it did look like it came off an actual turkey and not some turkey loaf. And their "wheat" bread was some kind of multigrain.

I used to work in the area and I ate here a lot. I agree that they are not the best, although some days are better than others. I think they're pretty good when you compare them to their competiton in the area, but that's an awfully big qualifier. There just aren't that many good places for take out lunch downtown and one can only eat at Greek Deli so many times.

It may be a big qualifier, but you also need to play the hand your dealt. When I was working in the area recently I found myself coming here about once a week and always being satisfied. The employees are friendly, attentive and know how to put together a sandwich. They have an unusual and welcome variety of meats, toppings and condiments. This is a consistently above-average lunch spot that warrants a detour of up to 2-3 blocks if you're in the area and looking for a quick, moderately-priced lunch. As noted, for $1 you get chips and a can beverage to round out your meal with some salt and sugar.

There is also a location at 3000 K St in Georgetown Harbor that opened in July 2011 according to the Georgetown Patch.

I believe the original location at 1801 K Street has closed.
