Le Sandwich, Owner Mehdi Ben's Sandwich Shop in the Former Street Corner Cafe Location, Clarendon - Closed

Recommended Posts

Just to update, Street Corner Cafe lasted maybe 6 months or so.  I think it has been closed since early in the fall if not earlier.

Someone is taking another run at this spot.  There are signs up for something called Le Sandwich advertsing that they bake their own baguettes.  The name alone makes me dubious of their prospects.  This has never been a strong location.  Maybe this time will be different.

I walked by and discovered that Le Sandwich opened today.  Not much yet on their website.

Hmm.  I walked by tonight, and the Le Sandwich neon sign has been taken down.  They also were closed during their posted business hours.  Inside, there was construction debris along the counters at the windows.  Their furniture is still inside, and they even still have bags of chips near the cash register area.  Maybe they're changing the name/concept?

Wow, would someone from Street Corner Cafe write and let us know what's going on? This is very odd.

A lot of people read this website, and I don't want there to be any confusion if a restaurant isn't closing.

I work in the building above Le Sandwich and it has been closed for the past couple of weeks.

I managed to try a sandwich from there in the maybe 1 week they were open.  It was..OK.  I had the pate, which was decent, but nothing exciting.  The bread was actually quite good though. Very crusty and chewy inside.

The customer service was abysmal however - my sandwich rang up as $2 more than the menu price, and when I pointed it out they said: "The menu is wrong. The pate costs extra, do you want it or not?"

I can't remember a restaurant ever closing in less than one month, but that appears to be the case with Le Sandwich. Just for curiosity's sake, I'd love to know the circumstances behind such a bizarre occurrence.

A co-worker spoke to someone who was there to renovate the space last week. Apparently the concept wasn't working out (it must have been failing spectacularly for them to realize this so quickly) and the same owners are redoing the interior and going with a different concept.  No word on what that concept might be.

Ah, so it's just a change in concept. Diego closed for some type of rebranding even more quickly than Le Sandwich did, so this isn't unprecedented.

ArlNow article about what happened and the new Mediterranean restaurant/hoagie shop that is taking Le Sandwich's place.

In terms of what happened to Le Sandwich, ArlNow says the owner of Larry's Homemade Ice Cream is the lease holder for Le Sandwich "and said he saw 'the store going downhill fast' and 'didn't like it,' so he decided to kick out Le Sandwich and its operator, Mehdi Ben, and give his wife the space for a restaurant."
