lovehockey
With apologies for the short notice... The Capitol Dome restoration is getting underway: Very soon the Dome will be scaffolded a la the Washington Monument as part of an effort to repair over 1000 cracks and other problems and keep it looking good for years to come. The scaffolding will cover the entire Dome with exception of the statue of Freedom. This project is expected to take two years. On the inside a canopy will be installed in the Rotunda. Click here to see what the 1999 edition looked like. The canopy will start going up on Saturday, April 12. Preparations to protect the artwork and statues in the Rotunda will begin later this week. That being said, if you'd like take a Capitol tour to see the Rotunda pre-doughnut (aka. canopy), among other parts of the building, you can do so on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. The tour maximum is 15. If there is enough interest an afternoon tour will be added. Details about stuff such as what not to bring will be PMd to those who sign up. If you have any questions, PM me. If you want to sign up, just respond to this post. Finally: It's free! Well, your taxes have paid for it...

Joe H
As a compliment to the Capitol tour also consider a short walk across the street to the Library of Congress which is one of America's Great buiildings. A cathedral of literature. I must add that decades ago I remember sitting in a gallery watching a session of Congress. An extraordinary experience. I am proud to live here. Now you can walk between the Capitol Visitors Center and the Jefferson Building via tunnel.
