johnb
Very few vines survived "The Devastator" - Phylloxéra - the 1863 plant-louse epidemic which destroyed fuck it I don't feel like writing. There is a terrific and definitive book on this subject written by George Ordish, called "The Great Wine Blight." I've mentioned it here before, and it is listed in the biblio section of Wikipedia article linked above. For anyone who wants to know everything there is to know on the subject, it is a must read. ol_ironstomach
As usual, I have jparrott to thank for having shared this bottle. M. Plouzeau "Clos de Maulévrier" Ante-Phylloxera - Franc de Pied.
DonRocks
As usual, I have jparrott to thank for having shared this bottle. M. Plouzeau "Clos de Maulévrier" Ante-Phylloxera - Franc de Pied I was drinking this *exact same bottle* (courtesy of Tim O'Rourke at Weygandt Wines in Cleveland Park) when I began this post - it's an important subject; I really just didn't feel like writing. Sthitch
Bollinger VV is still produced from ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines. Granted, it costs more than most people's monthly mortgage payments, but it is some ridiculously tasty juice.
The Hersch
Why the accent aigu in the otherwise English-language title of this thread?
