Bart
Very interesting article on trying to save old apple varieties before they're lost forever: "Why Your Supermarket Sells Only 5 Kinds Of Apples" by Rowan Jacobsen on motherjones.com
The Hersch
An interesting article indeed. What it doesn't address, though, is why your supermarket on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States sells only apples from Washington State and New Zealand. lperry
The GIant on Glebe near our house has a display every fall with local-ish apples from Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania, and they advertise it in the circular. I make an effort to stop in and buy some.
Xochitl10
Snider's in Silver Spring also highlights when they have Maryland apples.
thistle
Yes, I am extremely bummed that I can't get MacIntosh at the commissary, Granny Smiths (which are enormous) are a distant 2nd.
