Kona Ice Fundraiser for A 6-Year-Old with Coats' Disease, Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 6 PM - near Clarkesville Middle School

Recommended Posts

Don and I are old friends and we were talking about my upcoming fundraiser and he urged me to post it...

I have a friend here in Howard County named Sean. He is 6 years old and attends Pointers Run Elementary School. Sean has been diagnosed with a very rare eye disorder called "Clarksville Boy Raises Awareness For Rare Eye Disease" by Luke Lavoie on baltimoresun.com

I WILL HAVE MY KONA ICE TRUCK SET UP ON TROTTER ROAD,

BETWEEN POINTERS RUN ES AND CLARKSVILLE MS,

THURSDAY OCTOBER 16th 6pm

THERE IS NO SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY!

EVERY DOLLAR AND EVERY CENT YOU SPEND ON YOUR KONA PURCHASE WILL GO TO THE WILMER EYE INSTITUTE'S COATS DISEASE RESEARCH FUND - 100% OF IT!

Friends, listen up:

Steve Shuman and I go back to 1st grade. I was thinking about this the other evening, and there are only three phone numbers I remember from my elementary school friends, and Steve's is one of them.

The Shuman family also owned the DC-based Trover Shop bookstores - yet another mom-n-pop business that was forced into closure by the Big Box companies. Please read that article - it should tell you something about the Shuman family.

---

When I saw Steve post about this on Facebook, I urged him to post here, and that I would support him to the best of my ability. A *6-year-old child* has an orphaned disease, and is in danger of losing his vision because of it. Steve is generously donating ALL sales; not just profits, but sales revenue. Every penny.

I know we have our biggest strengths in Washington, DC, but anyone who is remotely close to Howard County or Clarksville - I beseech you to attend this. Please don't only buy a shaved ice, but donate a little money as well. Steve Shuman is one of "those human beings" who you can trust with your life - he is as honest as the day is long, and has *always* been one of the best people I know, probably because he had such a wonderful family who emphasized kindness and other virtues.

---

Thursday, October 16, 2014, starting at 6 PM. Please support Kona Ice in this endeavor, and help little Sean combat this dreaded disease that's threatening him with a lifetime of blindness.

If anyone would like to make a direct donation, go to the Wilmer Eye Institute, and make *sure* to check "Coats' Disease Research Fund" in the drop-down box that says "Please Designate My Gift To Support," and also fill in the "In Honor Of" section to "Kona Ice Fundraiser for Sean" - there's plenty of room in the box to fill in the contact information: "Kona Ice of Howard County, Steve Shuman, 443-878-6109, sshuman@kona-ice.com" This is a direct website to Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Center, so there's no middleman to intercept your funds, and 100% will be donated. If you can spare even $5, that's worth every bit as much as driving to Catonsville and buying a shaved ice on October 16th - the only people who will know are you, Hopkins, Steve, and Sean's family. I hope you find it within yourself to give even just a couple of dollars.

A reminder that this event is tonight at 6 PM. Repeating what I wrote a week ago:
