Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007), The Legendary Swedish Director, Writer, and Producer

A couple of us are doing an Ingmar Bergman retrospective, and will be starting with his earliest work, "Torment" (also known as "Frenzy" and "Hets," 1944), then working forward towards his later works, in order. If anyone wants to join in the discussion, please feel free. The discussions are here:

1944 Â¨Torment¨ (aka ¨Hets" and ¨Frenzy¨)

1946 ¨Crisis¨ (aka ¨Kris¨)

The only legitimate place I've found Torment is on Hulu Plus which offers a free week, followed by $7.99 a month. There are probably foreign websites that offer it as well, but I'm taking the legitimate route. However you view it, please feel free to share your thoughts (each movie will get its own thread).

This is a good chance to familiarize yourself with one of the greatest directors in history, and it can be done at your leisure. Well, why not?

Note that Bergman didn't directly direct (I think that's a phrase) Torment, but it's regarded as his first directorial work, and he wrote the screenplay as well.

Berman was born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1918: post-2-0-99344200-1448346639_thumb.png

and passed away in Fí¥rö, Sweeden in 2007. Fí¥rö is a tiny island off a slightly larger island called Gotland, itself off the coast of southeast Sweden - it is, needless to say, quite remote: post-2-0-81799900-1448346467_thumb.png

Well, so far it looks like we're stymied after the first two films: "It Rains On Our Love" (the 3rd film in the sequence) seems to be unavailable in this part of the world, at any price, unless you have a special DVD player.

Does anyone know about this stuff? The U.S. is considered "Region A," and a lot of these DVDs are locked to only play in "Region B."

I'm perfectly willing to pay for the film; I just can't find it.

I bought a "region-free" DVD player in 2012 that will play anything. I found it on Amazon for $55.95 (including shipping!). It will run on 110V to 240V, and all it requires is a Europe-to-US AC plug adapter that costs a couple of dollars. Do a search on Amazon (or your site of choice) on "region free DVD player" and you'll find lots, some of them even cheaper than the Toshiba I bought. I'm not particularly interested in this Bergman film, but there's no reason you can't watch it if there are Region B DVDs available.

ETA: Actually, the regions are numeric: Region 1 is US, Canada, Caribbean; region 2 is Europe, the Middle East, Japan, etc. At any rate, my region-free player will play region 2 discs with no problems.

Well, it only took nine months, but Don found "It Rains On Our Love" on YouTube!

I watched it a couple of nights ago, and thought it was quite different than the first two films. Some elements, like shadowy figures lurking in hallways, were familiar. On the whole, however, this film has a more modern feel.

The heroine, in particular, is ahead of her time. Hurry up and finish watching it so we can discuss!

The greatest thing about intellect is that (in many cases) it can continue to be fed, long after the physical body is destroyed.

Imagine Michael Jordan being able to blow past a 20-year-old NCAA All-American, and power-dunk, when he's a 70-year-old man.

That's what I'm saying.

It's beautiful. God, you have no idea.
