I saw it in LA with Topol when he was new to the role and at the Barns at Wold Trap on his farewell tour.

He was better when he was young, huh?

I got the impression that his later performances (despite being age-correct) were about "him" and not "the role" - when I saw him, he was playing to the audience, and enjoying himself just a little too much.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've seen "Cats" three times, and the third time (many years after it first came out), the actors were all just playing to the audience - subtly encouraging people to participate, going out and dancing in the aisles, etc. - and this was on Broadway, so it wasn't some local production. It's not fair to people seeing it for the first time (and, in fact, my friend was seeing it for the first time and was not the least bit mesmerized).

That's brave to admit on the internet.  :D

The first time was for me; the next two were for the benefit of my company. :)

I thought it was quite the spectacle when I was in my 20s.

Plus Andrew Lloyd Webber loves Bordeaux (I once read where he bought 100 cases of 1982 Cheval Blanc at a distress sale (that's $1-2 million worth of wine right now)).

You have *no idea* how many *bad* plays I've seen in my life. The worst musicals ever were "Grind" on Broadway and "Mail" at The Kennedy Center, neither of which I suspect anyone reading this has ever heard of.
