That, my friend, is genuine Salamida's Spiedie Sauce. The best of Binghamton (not the best in Binghamton...that would be at Sharkey's...just that spiedies are the best thing about Binghamton.)

I didn't know Binghampton had any thing that sounded that good. You just gave me a reason to stop the next time I'm upstate and headed for Toronto or Ottawa...the only thing that scares me about this is the following:

Spiedini or "Mixed Grill" prepared the spiedie way is available at Olive Garden Italian Restaurant. Can I get a review? (is that scary or what?)

Ah yes, Binghamton's contribution to world cuisine. A vinaigrette with which to marinate chunks of meat which are then grilled and served on white bread. WooHoo!!!! rolleyes.gif

I was introduced to Spiedie sauce more than a decade ago when I worked for a professional dog show handler who drove up there twice a year to visit his family and show dogs. I was instantly addicted. We used to stop on our way out of Binghamton and stock up on enough bottles to hold us for 6 months till our next visit.

I've gotten it at Harris-Teeter locally, and I think I've seen it at Wegmans, too. The latter would be no surprise, considering that Wegmans' roots are in upstate New York. I think Wegmans has their own house brand Spiedie sauce, too, but I haven't done any comparisons.

I love it on lamb, beef, and chicken.

ETA: I forgot about the white bread! I knew something was missing all these years! wink.gif

Since everyone is so fond of Spiedie Sauce, I thought I'd make this a separate topic.

But mostly, I'm doing it because one of our local chefs is opening an Italian restaurant (with carryout pizza) in Binghamton which is on the way to the Finger Lakes - travelers will be going right by the restaurant.

More details on Monday ..

PS - As bizarre as this might sound, the Spiedie Wikipedia link (in this post, three lines above) references the Bada Bing Food Truck. Likewise the No Idea Tavern in Baltimore which features "Spiedie Night" every Thursday. :wacko:

NB - Are overstuffed Spiedies with a roll that's too small known as Spiedos?

I grew up in the Hudson Valley, and from the mid-70s to early 80's attended an annual party at a friends house that drew people from all over. One person came from Binghamton every year with the makings for Spiedie's. He went by "Binghamton Bob" and was a Dead Head. Bob brought at least two pre-marinated varieties of protein each year from a short list of beef, lamb, pork and chicken. His contribution was very popular, to say the least.  :)

Harris Teeter stores carry Spiedie sauces, and I believe that Wegmans (which originated in upstate NY) also carries them. I was introduced to them about 20 years ago by the professional show dog handler I worked for. He grew up in Binghamton, and we would drive up there at least once a year for dog shows (and to visit his family). I haven't used the stuff in several years, but this is bringing back memories and I think I'll have to get some!
