The Dim Sum thread has spawned our latest DonRockwell.com eating group: The DonRockwell Dim Sum Die Hards.

The inagural meeting will be held Sunday, September 25th at Good Fortune.

If you are interested in joining in please let me know. Prepayment will not be required since you will determine the menu and it will change with each meeting.

The goal is to hit a variety of different restaurants who offer dim sum and then discuss the results on the Dim Sum thread. The thread will be used for planning only.

PM me if you would like to join in or have any questions and/or suggestions.

The inagural meeting will be held Sunday, September 25th at Good Fortune.

If you are interested in joining in please let me know.

I'm posting here, just so this pops back to the top, and people remember to RSVP to hillvalley.

We didn't say in this thread - are we still shooting for 1pm for the meeting? Good Fortune is at 2646 University Blvd. in Wheaton.

I will be there, probably with my 5-year-old daughter in tow. Mom has a prior engagement, and big brother is at a laser tag birthday party.

Why don't you meet at noon and that keep one of everything you order for Danialf or when you get there? There was some concern that if you wait until 1 it will be too late.

Those who have expressed interest are:

There is no need to rsvp so if you decide you want to join them at the last minute please feel free to do so!

No offense meant by this, but YUCK. :D Nothing worse than cold dim sum.

For future weeks, I can make arrangements to be there at noon if that's the time everyone wants. This weekend, I just can't get the logistics down - too many kids going to too many places at the same time. If you guys settle on noon, I'll just catch the next one.

Though I think that noon is the height of service, and it will be far easier to get a large table at either 11 or 1.

Someone just pick a time!:P:D

Okay: Good Fortune, this Sunday, at 1 pm. We can evaluate then whether that's too late for future outings.

Done! Dropping the boy off at a laser tag birthday party, but I will have the 5-year-old daughter with me. Just get her a few orders of sesame balls, and you won't hear a peep out of her the whole time.

1pm works for us. I will be bringing my 5-year-old girl as well. :P

Umm, silly question: assuming I get over my shyness and decide to join you all, how will I know you?

Please, do come! As noted on the picnic thread, we are both a very shy and very welcoming group.

We'll probably congregate at the front of the restaurant for 5 minutes to gather a critical mass. So look for the other shy, confused-looking non-Asians standing by the door.

Then we'll tell the hostess that "we're with the Rocks group, and expecting around 8-10 people". Then everyone else can just look for the only confused-looking non-Asian group sitting in the restaurant.

That's how it worked for the TemptAsian Cafe lunch I attended. Couldn't miss the group! :D

I'm the closest thing to an Asian we have in this group (I'm half Japanese), and no dim sum cart lady has ever walked by me without stopping. This time I sat on the inside. Was this a factor? I should stay away from the aisle seats at the other restaurants to get a fair comparison... although this may mean missing out on New Fortune's duck feet. And that would be a shame!

We would benefit from a larger group at the next outing - hint, hint! If a camera-shy misanthrope like me had a good time (and I did), the rest of you will too...

Next outing is October 9 at Hollywood East On The Boulevard in Wheaton. It's across the street from Good Fortune. FYI: Parking in Wheaton can be a challenge, and the little public lot next to GF is small and almost always full. There's a public lot at Grandview and Ennalls, sort of behind GF, that has plenty of room. (parking is free on Sundays) Remember, it's Hollywood East at 2621 University Blvd, NOT the original Hollywood East on Price Avenue.

Personally, I just let them know that I want those things and have them send the cart over. I love chicken feet, duck feet, tripe, you name it.

You can also park in the bank lot next to Hollywood East on weekends, so parking should not be too much of a problem, tho it is of course crowded.

Sorry I missed this one. And I'll be out of town on Oct. 9. Oh well, we'll get to one one of these days.

[Note: Good Fortune postings have been split off into Good Fortune thread here. We'll use this thread to organize the events, and then we can post the actual post-event stuff in the individual restaurant threads. Don't stress out about where to put things too much - that's my problem. Cheers, Rocks]

The selection's going to be limited because 1pm is considered late for dim sum.

If you try GF again during the "normal" dim sum hours (11-12), perhaps the selection will be better.

Where were you sitting in the restaurant?

The selection might be better, but would the quality improve? We were quite near the kitchen, and everything we received seemed fresh.

Shall we get our schedules ready for the next venture?

Date: Sunday, October 9

Location: Hollywood East on the Boulevard, 2621 University Blvd W

Time: ???

At GF we were seated at 1:15pm, and prime time was clearly over. We should probably go earlier for the remaining outings - is 11am too early for those with Sunday morning obligations? Is noon better?

Who plans to attend? I will be there, and will wear something distinctive (to be determined later) to make meeting up a bit easier. Maybe I'll duct-tape a rock to my head.

Well, here's the thing -

Around 1pm, they're not going to make any more food as dim sum's usually over by 2-3pm. So what you had was probably freshly made that day but lacked "wok hay". Also, it could've been the same dumpling that was around at 12:00, ya know? Not that it's a bad thing - think of it in terms of a buffet - you want to go right when it opens to get the freshest possible food.

Noon is MUCH better than 1pm, however, 11am is ideal. I understand God and obligations come before dim sum, though.

Edited to add: Here's my take on it - if you're going to go through the trouble of doing this, you should do it RIGHT and experience dim sum the way it's meant to be experienced. Timing is CRUCIAL to dim sum - there is a difference in selection, quality, service, etc depending on when you go. IMHO. :P

What we had wasn't a freshness or selection problem. It was a taste problem. Dishes that I order at other dim sum places (at 1pm) were simply short on taste. So many things were very bland.

Regarding Hollywood East, I can make it there by 11:30 if I leave with the kids at the break from Hebrew school; I can't get there until 12:30 if I stay until the end. Either way, count me in, plus 1-3 more depending on whether Ms. DanielK and the two junior DanielKs join.

Still sounds like we're on the fence between 11:30am and 1pm. If you're planning on attending, please post here, and register your preference.

I'm in either way, but I prefer 1pm.

I'm fine with any time between 11am and 1pm.

Come on, folks, we only had five adults at the first outing! Granted, you didn't miss much worthwhile eating at Good Fortune, but Hollywood East should be significantly better. The more people we have, the more goodies we can sample.

Newbies, shy folks, hungry people of all varieties - please show up! We'll have a little sign or some such thing (to be determined) so it'll be easy to find each other.

We are up for it. We can do any time.

AS tot he dim sum and what time issue, when we used to go to GF n a rgular basis we went at either 11 or 1 and it was always excellent. At about 12:30 they start putting out some more elaborate things, more substantial and lunch like than at 11:30. I find this to be true at Hollywood East as well.

THe shabbiness at Good Fortune spread far more than the dim sum. FIlthy unrepaired bathroom, grubby waiters station, tables in disrepair, waiters not on the ball etc. None of that has to do with the time of day.

You were brave to venture back to the restrooms. I bow to your courage. Or foolhardiness.

Daniel and Heather - since you folks have the time constraints, you make the call! Which time would fit best into your schedule: noon, 12:30, or 1?

Oh ScotteeM, you mentioned wanting to go, we'd love to see you, hint hint...

Okay, I'm volunteering to look a bit daft for the sake of easy gathering. If you don't recognize fellow Rockwellians, just look (down) for a very short, roundish, pale, dark-haired woman carrying a squirrel Beanie Baby. Or a large crab Beanie Baby, or a lobster one. Or all three, if we want to stage battles while waiting for the carts.

(tonight on the SciFi Channel: Squirrel Vs. Lobster, a SciFi Original movie starring Richard Dean Anderson and Tara Reid...)

I'm so sorry, but I can't make this event. I'm really hoping for this group to come to Norhern Virginia, but in the meanwhile, if I can make it into Maryland for an event, I will. Just not this weekend (sorry!).

I prefer 1pm, because it means I don't have to cut out of Sunday school early, but I will go with the group consensus. Thought it sounded like, at least for this week, 1pm remains acceptable for everyone.

There was some talk about organizing a Northern Virginia Dim Sum Comparo. Perhaps that can start two weeks after the Montgomery County version finishes up?

Just a reminder to one and all that this Sunday is the 3rd meeting of the DR.com Montgomery County dim sum comparo.

Sunday's meeting is at New Fortune, in Gaithersburg. New Fortune is on Rockville Pike (Rte. 355) just a block north of Shady Grove Rd. and I-370.

So, just two questions:

1) Who's coming?

2) What time should we meet? We've met at 1pm the last two times; should we do 1pm again?

I have a feeling we won't be there. We have guests in town from California. Too bad, I wanted to try NF again, haven't been in a long while and used to love it, service notwithstanding.

I'm ready to go, of course. Unfortunately I think Elizabeth has something else scheduled this Sunday.

After the official comparo we could consider making this a perpetual biweekly or monthly outing, rotating through the best of the dim sum places. (I'm eager to return to Hollywood East as soon as possible!)

Is anybody coming on Sunday? Lurkers, please speak up, because I'm sure we'll cancel if it's just myself and perrik...

I'm fine with that. We can reschedule for the next Sunday (30 Oct) so Dean and Elizabeth can make it, plus anyone else we can rope in. (Heather?) My husband wanted to come, but he also couldn't make it this particular Sunday. He should be able to make the 30th, though.

Folks? Shall we postpone New Fortune to the 30th?
