DanielK
The inagural meeting will be held Sunday, September 25th at Good Fortune. If you are interested in joining in please let me know. I'm posting here, just so this pops back to the top, and people remember to RSVP to hillvalley. We didn't say in this thread - are we still shooting for 1pm for the meeting? Good Fortune is at 2646 University Blvd. in Wheaton. I will be there, probably with my 5-year-old daughter in tow. Mom has a prior engagement, and big brother is at a laser tag birthday party. Gastro888
Cheers to hillvalley for organizing this! I hope y'all have a good time. I will not be able to attend this first event. DanielK
We're out at 11, so I could make 11:30-45 after dropping off the kids. Hebrew School for my kids runs until noon. So I'd have to cut out early, and have my wife take the kids home, or I can't get there until 12:30 or 1.

There was some concern that if you wait until 1 it will be too late. No offense meant by this, but YUCK. Nothing worse than cold dim sum. For future weeks, I can make arrangements to be there at noon if that's the time everyone wants. This weekend, I just can't get the logistics down - too many kids going to too many places at the same time. If you guys settle on noon, I'll just catch the next one. Though I think that noon is the height of service, and it will be far easier to get a large table at either 11 or 1. Someone just pick a time! perrik
Cold dim sum really does suck. Not as badly as cold french fries do, but still... ugh. Okay: Good Fortune, this Sunday, at 1 pm. We can evaluate then whether that's too late for future outings.

DanielK
Umm, silly question: assuming I get over my shyness and decide to join you all, how will I know you? Please, do come! As noted on the picnic thread, we are both a very shy and very welcoming group. We'll probably congregate at the front of the restaurant for 5 minutes to gather a critical mass. So look for the other shy, confused-looking non-Asians standing by the door. Then we'll tell the hostess that "we're with the Rocks group, and expecting around 8-10 people". Then everyone else can just look for the only confused-looking non-Asian group sitting in the restaurant.

johnb
I'm the closest thing to an Asian we have in this group (I'm half Japanese), and no dim sum cart lady has ever walked by me without stopping. This time I sat on the inside. Was this a factor? I should stay away from the aisle seats at the other restaurants to get a fair comparison... although this may mean missing out on New Fortune's duck feet. And that would be a shame! We would benefit from a larger group at the next outing - hint, hint! If a camera-shy misanthrope like me had a good time (and I did), the rest of you will too... Next outing is October 9 at Hollywood East On The Boulevard in Wheaton. It's across the street from Good Fortune. FYI: Parking in Wheaton can be a challenge, and the little public lot next to GF is small and almost always full. There's a public lot at Grandview and Ennalls, sort of behind GF, that has plenty of room. (parking is free on Sundays) Remember, it's Hollywood East at 2621 University Blvd, NOT the original Hollywood East on Price Avenue. Personally, I just let them know that I want those things and have them send the cart over. I love chicken feet, duck feet, tripe, you name it. You can also park in the bank lot next to Hollywood East on weekends, so parking should not be too much of a problem, tho it is of course crowded. Sorry I missed this one. And I'll be out of town on Oct. 9. Oh well, we'll get to one one of these days.

Gastro888
The selection's going to be limited because 1pm is considered late for dim sum. If you try GF again during the "normal" dim sum hours (11-12), perhaps the selection will be better. Where were you sitting in the restaurant? The selection might be better, but would the quality improve? We were quite near the kitchen, and everything we received seemed fresh. Shall we get our schedules ready for the next venture? Date: Sunday, October 9 Location: Hollywood East on the Boulevard, 2621 University Blvd W Time: ??? At GF we were seated at 1:15pm, and prime time was clearly over. We should probably go earlier for the remaining outings - is 11am too early for those with Sunday morning obligations? Is noon better? Who plans to attend? I will be there, and will wear something distinctive (to be determined later) to make meeting up a bit easier. Maybe I'll duct-tape a rock to my head. Gastro888
Well, here's the thing - Around 1pm, they're not going to make any more food as dim sum's usually over by 2-3pm. So what you had was probably freshly made that day but lacked "wok hay". Also, it could've been the same dumpling that was around at 12:00, ya know? Not that it's a bad thing - think of it in terms of a buffet - you want to go right when it opens to get the freshest possible food. Noon is MUCH better than 1pm, however, 11am is ideal. I understand God and obligations come before dim sum, though. Edited to add: Here's my take on it - if you're going to go through the trouble of doing this, you should do it RIGHT and experience dim sum the way it's meant to be experienced. Timing is CRUCIAL to dim sum - there is a difference in selection, quality, service, etc depending on when you go. IMHO. Dishes that I order at other dim sum places (at 1pm) were simply short on taste. So many things were very bland. Regarding Hollywood East, I can make it there by 11:30 if I leave with the kids at the break from Hebrew school; I can't get there until 12:30 if I stay until the end. Either way, count me in, plus 1-3 more depending on whether Ms. DanielK and the two junior DanielKs join.

perrik
I'm fine with any time between 11am and 1pm. Come on, folks, we only had five adults at the first outing! Granted, you didn't miss much worthwhile eating at Good Fortune, but Hollywood East should be significantly better. The more people we have, the more goodies we can sample. Newbies, shy folks, hungry people of all varieties - please show up! We'll have a little sign or some such thing (to be determined) so it'll be easy to find each other. deangold
I'm fine with any time between 11am and 1pm. We are up for it. We can do any time. AS tot he dim sum and what time issue, when we used to go to GF n a rgular basis we went at either 11 or 1 and it was always excellent. At about 12:30 they start putting out some more elaborate things, more substantial and lunch like than at 11:30. I find this to be true at Hollywood East as well. THe shabbiness at Good Fortune spread far more than the dim sum. FIlthy unrepaired bathroom, grubby waiters station, tables in disrepair, waiters not on the ball etc. None of that has to do with the time of day. Oh ScotteeM, you mentioned wanting to go, we'd love to see you, hint hint... Okay, I'm volunteering to look a bit daft for the sake of easy gathering. If you don't recognize fellow Rockwellians, just look (down) for a very short, roundish, pale, dark-haired woman carrying a squirrel Beanie Baby. Or a large crab Beanie Baby, or a lobster one. Or all three, if we want to stage battles while waiting for the carts. (tonight on the SciFi Channel: Squirrel Vs. Lobster, a SciFi Original movie starring Richard Dean Anderson and Tara Reid...)
