DonRocks
In the new Northgate complex at 450 N. Washington St., about two full blocks south on Route 29 from Chasin' Tails, Cafe Kindred has put up signage, and according to their Facebook page, is working hard to open (if you look at the photos there, you can almost feel the excitement of two people working to make their dream a reality). stevem
Our long, national coffee nightmare in Falls Church may have ended. Cafe Kindred (cafekindred.com) has opened at 450 North Washington Street. The Vigilante drip coffee was very good, and I'm looking forward to when they start serving espresso drinks soon. My muffin was tasty with actual blueberries in it. It's a very comfortable space with plenty of room and outlets along with the obligatory strong wi-fi. Most importantly, the music is awesome with a cool, British new wave/alternative/whatever vibe. The place is very visible from the street, but they are going to have to do a good job communicating how to park in the lot. This is an ongoing challenge in Falls Church.

stevem
Just sharing that the espresso/cappuccino service is now happening here (not just drip coffee). My cappuccino was served today on a platter with simple syrup and a small snack. Classy joint! Please support them so we can keep having nice things in Falls Church.
Al the Pal
This place was really hopping this Sunday morning. This was our second time at Cafe Kindred and the first since they started doing coffee drinks. They do a really good flat white. It comes on a tray with a cookie and small glass of sparkling water (I believe.) Since I've had some not so great flat whites, it is nice to find a place that can do one right. (Don't ask me what exactly a flat white is, but I know it when I taste it! My husband, the Australian, gave it a thumbs up.) We had a lemon bar and an almond apricot pastry. Both very good. Looking forward to more visits!

DonRocks
Place is still sadly slow on weekday mornings. Please help them.... Having to park in that garage does not help - assuming that high-rise consists of apartments (does it?), the residents are going to need to support this coffeehouse. If there was some way they could swing curbside coffee service for $2 cash, that would really help them.
stevem
The getting into the garage on that side of (going towards 66) is very easy and there is parking on the top level of the garage right behind the cafe, although the spaces aren't wonderfully marked. Leaving the garage (right turn only) is a marginal adventure, but that's a small price to pay for supporting a local business. The parking lot at the big Starbucks in the Famous Daves/Chipotle lot is also irritating, but for different reasons.

The parking lot at the big Starbucks in the Famous Daves/Chipotle lot is also irritating, but for different reasons. Oh, no doubt - I've done it, but when people are on their way to work, they want 7-11 (or Starbucks)-style parking: pull up to the door, dash in, and dash out (the irony, of course, is that there's hardly any such thing as "dashing in and out" of Starbucks anymore). The garage is more of a psychological barrier than an actual one - it takes about one extra minute in each direction. People may disagree, but I think this building is a fine example of what I've termed "Selfish Architecture" - buildings that are so in-your-face that they almost appear to eliminate the sidewalk - and I think the mere sight of that awful building is enough to make people look away and keep driving. I know that's not fair to Cafe Kindred - it's certainly not their fault, and I'm going to do my best to support them - but unfortunately, I believe it to be true. stevem
The long-awaited bar and evening hours appear to be happening now. They have some nice beers and the people eating the fries with vinegar last night seemed quite happy. The extended hours are not every night so your mileage may vary... stevem
It's been six months so I wanted to take a second and give another shout-out. The Vigilante coffee and espresso drinks remain strong and the addition of the Nutella croissant is a plus. I've been for dinner/drinks in the evening a few times, and that is lovely as well. Parking behind the shop in the garage is easy. The music is also always good, although I could deal with a little less Oasis and a little more Blur. Falls Church needs to support this independent shop to keep us from being stuck with only the chains...

Who?! With this, I'm going to move Cafe Kindred out of the Coffee Shops and Roasters Forum and into the Restaurants and Dining Forum.
stevem
Checked out the new dinner menu tonight. The adults had burgers ($12-15). My BLT burger was appropriately cooked and very tasty. The Other raved about her burger with fried egg and giant onion ring. She's smarter than me and only ate half. Good, crispy fries. Kids both ate off the kids' menu ($6). Boy pronounced the grilled cheese to be of high quality. Service was relaxed without being lazy. Music is always awesome and there are very pretty holiday decorations and a giant Gingerbread house. This coming Wednesday features Beers and Carols at 7.
