"Adam-12" (1968-1975) - Police Drama Following Two Officers on Duty in Los Angeles

"Adam-12" was a favorite of mine as a pre-teen and early teen - it stars Martin Milner and Kent McCord as two LAPD officers, and follows them while they're on duty, running into various real-time situations. It was co-created by Robert Cinader, who also co-created the Adam-12 spin-off, "Emergency!," and Jack Webb, who played Sgt. Joe Friday on "Dragnet."

A special mention should be made of William Boyett, who plays the tertiary character of Sergeant William "Mac" MacDonald - also of Gary Crosby, who plays the recurring, impish character of Officer Edward "Ed" Wells (cf. Season 1, Episode 22). Likewise Shaaron Claridge, who portrayed the radio dispatcher in nearly every episode - Claridge was a real-life LAPD radio dispatcher, so they never showed her face; however, she did have a cameo in one episode (Season Five's "Suspended") - she was shot from above, and wearing a wig so her identity would remain confidential.

And I found a *wonderful* blog about Adam-12 - written by a person named Keely with whom I've exchanged a cordial email. I'll be linking to the blog entries for each episode, because it's the absolute best that I've found, and Keely is a nice person. Anyone who is looking for some in-depth information about the episodes - I heartily encourage you to explore lincolnxrayida.blogspot.com. Keely tells me it will take a couple of years to finish the entire series, but that's A-OK with me - we've got the time.

I just watched Season 1, Episode 1, "The Impossible Mission," for the first time ever. Especially in this day-and-age, it is an *exceedingly* heart-warming story that might even bring tears to your eyes (as the picture below hints at). I highly recommend that if you belong to Hulu, you watch this first episode (it's free with a membership).

Hey, Don, It's Keely. Thanks for all the kind words and the plug for the blog. I'll never forget the first time I saw the pilot episode of Adam-12. After it was over, I looked at my husband and said, "Where has Adam-12 been all my life?" That was it, I was hooked.

Here's a fun fact about  about the show. All of the titles from the first 3 seasons start with a log number. This was was an accounting system of sorts. Tom Williams, one of the show's producers explained this in an Adam-12 Facebook group I belong to. As you know the show was based on true stories which were submitted by LAPD officers. The log #'s were used to keep track of the LAPD division the story came from and the number of stories the credited to that division. For example, Log 88 was the 8th story from division 8 (West Los Angeles). The officers who submitted "winning" stories were sent (I think) $50 for the division coffee fund. Don't ask me how they kept track once they did away with the log numbers.

Oh, and I totally agree with your assessment of episode 17. It really is one of the best episodes of the entire series. I've been lucky enough to meet and spend time talking with Kent McCord twice. When I initially met him one of the first questions he asked me was what my favorite episodes were. I replied that they were "Log 56: Vice Versa" (S3 E23) and "Log 33: It All Happened So Fast". (I didn't actually say the log numbers in my reply to him, but you get the idea.) "It All Happened So Fast" is one of Kent's favorites, too. In fact, he believes it's one of the finest pieces of work in the entire series.

I'm almost through Season 1, and the two episodes that have *really* gotten to me were Season 1, Episode 17 ("It All Happened So Fast") and Season 1, Episode 23 ("He Was Trying To Kill Me"). The latter was one of the saddest things I have ever seen on television in my life. 

Having watched Episode 17, I'm really sorry they chose to make Episode 14 (the one in which Malloy is forced to shoot a couple of people). They really needed to show Episode 17 first, and I question the wisdom of airing Episode 14 at all.
